The Ice RinkCampus ice rink

Did you know that the medical center once had its own ice skating rink? Starting in the late 1930s, the medical center’s tennis courts, then located along 165th Street next to the Eye Institute, were flooded to allow skaters to frolic when the temperatures dropped below freezing. The practice continued until the tennis courts were demolished in 1960 to make way for the hospital’s Central Services Building.

Patient Data Privacy and Protection Awareness Week

This week around the world, industries are raising awareness about the importance of protecting personal data. For health care organizations, this is especially crucial. Every employee has the responsibility to keep patients’ data private and protected. This includes:
  • Accessing patient information only if there is a business need
  • Not disclosing patient information on social media without authorization
  • Encrypting all electronic devices used to access or store patient information
If you are aware of any unauthorized access, use, or disclosure of patient information, please notify the Office of HIPAA Compliance immediately at hipaa@cumc.columbia.edu.

Additionally, CUMC workforce members must complete annual HIPAA training by April 30. The training modules can be accessed here.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation in keeping CUMC’s data protected.
