Back to Business for 2017

Now that the silly season is well and truly behind us for another year, we're back in full swing at the CCT! One of our key focus points for 2017 is continuing our promotion of Collinsville to the world! Below we have some tips on how we can all contribute and place Collinsville events, sights and top locations in the spotlight!

We also strive to promote events and occasions locally, through our website, online calendar, this monthly newsletter and social media channels. If you have an upcoming event, of any type, send us an email, or a message via Facebook and we can help promote it for you!

Congratulations to all the Australia Day Award winners!

Last Thursday the Collinsville community gathered to celebrate the dedication and hard work of our citizens of the year. Marissa Kearney and Les Creffield were both awarded Citizen of the Year. Marissa's tireless efforts over many years with the Collinsville Lions Club, and other committees such as the CCT, QCWA, CCA and the Pit Pony Experience, have meant success for countless events and fundraising efforts. Les has worked with Ergon Energy in the Collinsville area for many years, and always a friendly face when power outages have affected the region. Les has also worked with many local sport organisations, including the Bowen River and Collinsville rodeos.

Congratulations also to Doug Batchelor, Senior Citizen of the Year. Doug has supported the Coalface Experience, Collinsville Scottville Workers Club and Memorial Day for many years, providing support and tours for many visitors and local groups. Brittney Hathaway was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for excellent efforts both in school and the wider community. Congratulations to June Hathaway, Senior Cultural Award, Kennan Dawson, Junior Cultural Award, Renae Batchelor, Senior Sports Award, Abby Plate, Junior Sports Award, Matthew Pike, Sports Administration Award, Jeanette Donald, CCA Volunteer of the Year, and finally to the QCWA for the Mad Hatters Morning Tea taking the community event of the year.

Promoting our Town

As we move into 2017, we want to keep promoting Collinsville as a destination of choice to travellers to the region! Currently we advertise local events and things to do via our website, social media pages, and through the Pit Pony Experience and Memoirs Online. These tools allow us to promote local businesses and community groups free of charge, and we hope that visitors to Collinsville are able to use these sites during their stay.

In 2017 we will be placing a larger focus on social media channels to spread the word! We'll be starting to add #hashtags to events, notices and stories to build a social media list of all things Collinsville. And we need your help!! If you're at a great local event - be it a band on a Friday evening, a fundraising event, or sports day - take some photos and post them on your Facebook or Twitter page, and add a hashtag! Adding tags like #VisitCollinsville, or #CollinsvillesPitPony, can help build a list in cyberspace of all the things we love about our town! If you'd like more information on using #hashtags, check out this great article: The Beginners Guide to the Hashtag.

As well as promoting all things Collinsville, we'll be working on adding more information to our Memoirs Online website. We currently have over 12,000 images and videos in the archive and we'll be adding more over the next months. Keep up with updates by liking our Memoirs Facebook page here. And if you have some great photos of Collinsville, send them in and we'll add them to the collection. We recently received the photo below from Don Morris. It shows Mrs Coolon (left) and Mrs Evans (right) on a trip to Wales following the sale of the Mine at Mt Coolon. Thank you to Don for taking the time to send us this image.

Media Release - E-Waste Recycling at Collinsville Waste Transfer Station

The Whitsunday Regional Council have released the following information surrounding the disposal of E-Waste:
Do you live in Collinsville and have an old TV or computer you want to dispose of?  Not sure how to get rid of old electronic items?
Mayor Andrew Willcox said that thanks to the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme, Collinsville residents will be able to place their electronic waste items in e-waste containers free of charge from Wednesday 1 February.
“The trial already operates at Kelsey Creek Landfill, Bowen Landfill and Cannonvale Transfer Station, and we are pleased we can extend this service to our Collinsville Waste Transfer Station in Scottville Road,” he said.
“Council’s Mackay-based e-waste partner, E-Waste Recycling Australia will collect the contents and take it to the recycling facility in Mackay.
“Majority of the items are recycled into new products instead of them ending up as waste in our landfills.
“If you have an old TV or computer to recycle, all you need to do is inform the operator at the gatehouse at the Collinsville Waste Transfer Station  and they will let you know which container to place the items in, and best of all it’s free.”
Last year, Council managed to divert 8,000 tonnes of waste from landfill which is approximately 16% of all the waste which Council manages.  Council has plans to make further improvements, with the e-waste scheme to help considerably.
The containers will accept TVs  (both flat screen and older CRT types), radios, computers, laptops, keyboards, printers (no paper!), mouses, tablets and similar handheld devices,  but not electrical items like toasters, kettles or white goods – Council already recycles these as scrap metal.
