Message from the Commodore

Dear Members,

I’m writing to you so that you are the first to know this year’s iSail Lidgett Trophy will be the last one in its current format.  Your Club Committee and the iSail Lidgett Management team have thought about and discussed this decision recently and there are a range of reasons why we feel now is the perfect time to make a transition.

The iSail Lidgett Trophy is a magnificent event, having gone from strength to strength over its 18 years, thanks to the enormous expertise and dedication of the Lidgett Family team, coaches and volunteers.  It is time for the iSail Lidgett Trophy to go out “on top”.

This event has given us great prestige with other clubs, Yachting Victoria and Sailing Australia and showcases the best of our great club, however this is balanced with us needing to manage the energy and resources of our member volunteer base and to now put more focus on a range of activities that build our ability to:
  • get kids on the water
  • provide more skill development opportunities for all our sailors
  • further build our member base; and
  • keep DBYC prominent as the excellent sailing club that we are.
We won the 2016 YV Award for Junior and Youth Sailing for some very good reasons and the Committee is convinced that this quite difficult decision will be absolutely vindicated in the future years.  To that effect we are in the process of formulating a detailed strategy that outlines our plans and intend to share that with the membership by the end of the season.

I absolutely acknowledge the love many of you (rightly) have for the iSail Lidgett Trophy and we urge you all to turn that support and dedication towards the range of activities we will be pursuing to keep DBYC a strong and viable club.  As an example, the increasing success of DBYC Tackers, Four-day intensive, GirlSail and Schools Sailing is going to provide us with a range of fronts that showcase our talents and provide opportunities and pride for our members.  Naturally many of you will have questions about this decision so please feel free to contact me or any member of the Committee for further information.  A similar message is being sent to entrants, coaches and supporters of the event.

The iSail Lidgett Trophy will be remembered fondly in future for its excellence and the friendships formed over the years because it has maintained a level that is increasingly hard to continue.  Our challenge now is to ensure that everyone at DBYC gets behind the 2017 iSail Lidgett Trophy and makes sure it goes out with a bang, and I’m sure that you will do so.

Regards,

Peter Manger
