Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - February 13th, 2017
Dear Friends:

I'll keep my message short today but I just wanted to mention that yesterday we had a birthday party celebrating the 60th birthday of Smalls founder Mitch Borden.  Mitch Borden is the spiritual/physical force behind the conception and operation of Smalls.  He founded the club back in April of 1994 and has, with only a couple years pause, been dutifully working the club night after night, day after day.  Mitch is a special kind of person - one that you rarely meet in life.  He's a man dedicated to an ideal - the ideal of generosity and sharing.  An ideal that Jazz Music represents the very best that Mankind has to offer - the merger of art, philosophy and religion.  Everyone that knows Mitch knows about his boundless spirit, his joy, his tireless efforts.  He's one of the few guys that I've never seen angry - barely once or twice in the 23 years that I've know him, worked for him and know, as his business partner.  Mitch is a person who, though in the wings hidden away, has been one of the most influential forces in this music and nearly any musician you ask will tell you the same.  For me it's been an unparalleled opportunity to know him and to be his friend.  I owe him in ways that I can not enumerate - as a musician he's given me the opportunity to grow and develop, as a person he's been a role-model for me on how to be modest and generous.  I hope one day that they make statue for Mitch right there on the corner of West 10th Street and 7th ave.  Happy Birthday Mr. Mitchell Borden.

Regards,

Spike
