Raising another generation for Christ

Carey College News

1 February 2017

Ready for 2017!

Our pupils and teachers have been right into things this morning!.

Last week our teachers and tutors attended three days In Service Training beginning a programme of professional development based around Doug Lemov's book, Teach Like a Champion.  Our staff are continually striving to improve their teaching and the techniques that Lemov re-iterates in his book have been shown to improve student engagement, raise their academic expectation and accountability.

This year a careful observer will notice revision being incorporated into the beginning of lessons, questions being broken into smaller segments and students being asked to frame those answers into academic language and so model ling more closely the responses required in  tests and examinations.

Enrolment Opportunities

Our pupils are privileged to have close attention from teachers, and programmes tailored very closely to their needs.  There are spaces in our primary and secondary classes for pupils from new families who appreciate Christian education in the Cambridge context but don’t yet know about Carey College.

We know that we get most inquiries when parents of existing pupils tell others about our school. Do spread the word!

Final Assembly
Congratulations to those winning awards at our 2016 Final Assembly. Shradha Sabu was awarded the Lotu-Iiga Cup for Christian Character. Special Achievement Awards were made to Joshua Brickell and Joshua Lee for Leadership. Priscilla John received a Special Achievement Award for Christian Character.

You can find more photos from the Final Assembly in our Facebook album.

Coming Up

We have two meetings with parents coming up. one for parents with Room 2 children new to the school, and one to inform secondary parents about various matters.

As parents will be aware, we will no longer be using the online reporting system, Engrade. We are considering a number of alternative programmes nd you can appreciate that we want to make use of the best avaiable to us and that assessing them takes time. While we consider the options will will be used paper-based report books. For the secondary this is a Module Record book and the primary class will continue to use the existing Term Record book.

On the evening of the School Picnic, we will hold a meeting for parents of secondary students to familiarise them with record books, and also with the requirements of the Cambridge International Exams.

Over the next week, parents of new primary students will be familiarized with Room 2 procedures, homework and Term Record books. They will also be introduced to our reporting programme for completion and test marks. Miss Daynes will appraoch parents to ask them for a time to meet.
AMETI Update

The AMETI Eastern Busway Project is about to undertake a series of geotechnical and pavement investigations along and around Lagoon Drive.

The proposed work began on 31 January, and involves testing within the road and footpath. Traffic management will occur at some sites, so you may experience traffic delays in Lagoon Drive.

When Are Classrooms Open?

Our classrooms are open to primary students after 8.30am, and to secondary students after 8.00am each morning. We are able to accommodate families wishing to arrange an earlier drop off, please inquire.

Secondary students may remain at school completing coursework until 5.00pm  Monday to Thursday, and until 4pm on Fridays.

Outstanding Cambridge Results

Congratulations to Kudzaishe Biri and Tanaka Tachiwona who achieved some outstanding in their Cambridge examinations last year. They gained three A grade passes between them;  A* grades for IGCSE Literature and for IGCSE Co-ordinated Science, plus an A grade for IGCSE Mathematics. Didn't they do well there!

Congratulations to all those students who passed their Cambridge exams in AS and A Level exams and other IGCSE papers. For Cambridge, the grades that correspond to a pass of at least 50% are A* to D grades.
This is a boxed text block. You can use it to draw attention to important content.

Please Save the Date -
for our School Picnic

We will be holding our annual School Picnic at school Wednesday 15 February, between 6.00 and 7.30pm. More details about our shared meal will follow.

Staffing

Miss Eastwood has advised us that she will remain on holiday and not return to teaching this year.  We are extremely thankful for the work she has done for the school over many years. Miss Eastwood continues to support the school; she has been assisting with a number of projects this week and in the future - so you will see her at school from time to time.

Sun Smart

Please remember that during this term uniform sunhats are required to worn when students are outdoors.

You may have seen in the media lately, articles regarding sunscreen efficacy. The Cancer Society say that while sunscreen is important and their Daffodil Enterprise has supplied the school with free sunscreen.  Please ask at the office if you would like to receive a tube of this SPF 50 sunscreen.

Sunscreen is not a suit of armor and should not be relied alone for sun protection, but is to be used in combination with wearing Sun Smart hats, sun protective clothing and seeking shade. It is also important that sunscreen is applied correctly, 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every 2 hours. For more information about the correct use of sunscreen: www.sunscreen.org.nz
