National Center for Health Statistics Data Brief Analyzes Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption Among U.S. Youth

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for survey years 2011–2012 and 2013–2014 were used in this National Center for Health Statistics data brief, Sugar-sweetened Beverage Consumption Among U.S. Youth, 2011–2014. Summary findings include that "the percentage of total calories consumed from sugar-sweetened beverages on a given day increased with age, with those aged 12-19 having the highest intakes."

Healthy Food America
Healthy Food America is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit launched in 2016 to act on scientific evidence to drive change in food policy and industry practice, giving people greater control over their health and reducing diet-related illnesses, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Howard County Unsweetened
With funding from the local Horizon Foundation, Howard County Unsweetened focuses on making it easier for families to find healthy beverages and reduce consumption of sugary drinks. The campaign includes policy measures and public health messaging to improve healthy beverage choices in schools, childcare centers, government locations and community organizations. A youth campaign, #BevRev (see related article "#BevRev Youth Campaign Employs Anti-Tobacco Tactics Against the Soda Industry"), features videos that show teenagers taking on the sugary drink industry.  Howard County Unsweetened shares resources, tips and tricks, news, and a blog about local action.
