Feb. 4. 2017: Monthly Newsletter #1 - The Debut
Hello! And thank-you for subscribing to the Afishionado Newsletter. We are so pleased to be able to launch the first edition this week. This newsletter is meant to act as a hub for all things "sustainable seafood" - from featured articles, to our products, to books, to documentaries, to events happening in the HRM. In today's newsletter you can expect to read about the following topics:

Afishionado - Who we are and what we do

Afishionado Fishmongers is your community-minded provider of fresh and fresh-frozen seafood dedicated to bringing low-impact fishing traditions back to the plates of consumers. For us, knowing the story behind the fish we sell is paramount. We follow Ocean Wise certification as our main guide, a classification that ensures responsibility to a fishery’s abundance and catch method. We also build deep relationships with our region’s small-scale, community-based fishers and aquaculturalists, and any Afishionado products that don’t have Ocean Wise certification, such as our wild Atlantic Halibut and Cod, are fished using low-impact fishing methods, such as hook and line.

The Sushi Economy
By: Sasha Issenberg
A book about sushi and the exciting journey fish takes from ocean to plate. This book focuses specifically on the history and popularization of the elusive bluefin tuna from its humble beginnings as a poor man's dish to becoming the pinnacle of a luxury food item. Serving as the poster child for the face of sushi, bluefin tuna can help us track the globalization of what has now become a near-universal cuisine. Issenberg's approach to "the sushi economy" is as digestible as it is interesting. What started as a quick snack has culminated into a multi-billion dollar industry employing countless individuals and a suite of countries. While there is some focus on the conservation needs of bluefin tuna, this book mainly covers a sea of material about how local trade economies fit into the larger scale of globalization and the widespread need to satiate our collective taste for raw fish.

Fun Facts: Oysters

  • Oysters are hermaphrodites! They start out life as sperm producing males, but as they mature they switch to egg producing females, and can switch back to being males.

  • Although all oysters can secrete pearls, the pearl oyster family comes from a different family to the edible oyster. An oyster produces a pearl when a grain of sand or some other irritant becomes trapped inside. The oyster then coats it repeatedly with nacre, a combination of calcium and protein, otherwise known as Mother of Pearl, to reduce the irritation.

  • Known for their aphrodisiac qualities, Casanova reportedly ate 50-60 oysters a day!
