Fact Sheets Put Local Lens on What's at Stake in Potential Federal Policy Changes

With the new administration, it is likely that California will see reduced federal support for key public services that assist individuals and families. In order to shed light on what such cuts might mean for communities in our state, the California Budget & Policy Center created a set of Fact Sheets that puts a local lens on current levels of economic hardship and on two critical programs that could be threatened. These four new fact sheets examine the following:

Poverty Rate by Congressional District:
This analysis highlights the extent of economic hardship facing many parts of California. The poverty rate by congressional district varies widely – from a low of around 7 percent to a high of more than 30 percent – and in 11 districts more than 1 in 5 people live in poverty. This analysis also shows that in the vast majority of congressional districts, the poverty rate has risen since 2000.

CalFresh Participation by County:
An estimated 4.3 million people receive food assistance through CalFresh, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in California. In well over half of all counties, more than 1 in 10 residents participate in CalFresh, and in some San Joaquin Valley counties over 1 in 5 residents receive food assistance.

SSI/SSP Participation by County and
by Congressional District
:
Supported by both federal and state dollars, Supplemental Security Income/State Supplementary Payment (SSI/SSP) grants provide basic cash income to well over 1 million seniors and people living with disabilities – reaching every county and congressional district in our state. San Francisco is among the 10 counties with the highest shares of people enrolled in SSI/SSP, though most of these counties — including the "top three" of Del Norte, Lake, and Siskiyou — are in rural areas.

In the coming weeks and months, the California Budget & Policy Center will continue to examine major policy proposals at the federal level and their implications for communities across our state. To keep up with all the latest, be sure to follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
