“Scholars Breaking Boundaries”: Eqbal Mohmmed Dauqan of Yemen 

          
Assistant Professor Eqbal Mohmmed Dauqan, an IIE-SRF fellow hosted at the National University of Malaysia.

IIE-SRF fellow and biochemist Dr. Eqbal Mohmmed Dauqan of Yemen conducts research in the antioxidant production of plants and oils at the National University of Malaysia (UKM). Working within UKM’s School of Chemical Science and Food Technology, Dauqan is the author of several works in the field of biotechnology and has adapted her Ph.D. thesis to a book titled Red Palm Olein and Other Vegetable Oils for Human Health. “UKM has provided me with all necessary things to conduct my research experiments and supported me to attend national and international conferences,” Dauqan said. “The IIE-SRF fellowship meant a lot to me as a savior who came to me in a timely manner."

February 1 Event at Pomona College: “Free Speech in a Dangerous World” Lecture Series to Feature IIE-SRF Fellows from Syria and Turkey

The speaker series seeks to promote diversity and academic freedom throughout the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven liberal arts institutions in southern California.

The latest installment of the “Free Speech in a Dangerous World” speaker series at Pomona College will feature two IIE-SRF fellows. The event – “Lived Experiences: Free Speech, Academic Freedom and Scholars at Risk in Turkey and Syria” – will take place on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 4:30 PM in Pomona’s Hahn Hall. A forensic psychologist from Turkey and a Syrian engineer specializing in computer networks will discuss their experiences and the situations in their home countries. The scholar from Turkey is currently undertaking her IIE-SRF fellowship at Pomona College, while the Syrian scholar is a visiting professor at Harvey Mudd College.

Latin American Studies Association’s LASA Forum Features Article Co-Authored by IIE-SRF

                 

The Winter 2017 issue of the Latin American Studies Association’s LASA Forum features an article on IIE-SRF describing the program's history and global impact. LASA Forum publishes research articles and the latest news for LASA, the leading organization for scholars studying Latin America. The article, entitled “Protecting Academic Freedom and Higher Education Academies: The Scholar Rescue Fund of the Institute of International Education,” quotes an IIE-SRF host institution: “The IIE-SRF program is an important opportunity for universities and colleges worldwide to demonstrate their core values of academic freedom and discovery in practical and meaningful ways.” The article describes several avenues of collaboration between IIE-SRF and the LASA membership, and it is part of a wider collaboration between the two programs. IIE-SRF has supported scholars from several Latin American countries, including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela.
