FEBRUARY IS FOR LOVE,

LOVE ART!

A word from the
Executive Director

The new year has started off with an exciting mix of programs bringing new artists and new creative opportunities to Studio Channel Islands. We are very excited to be working with Wendy Gordin to bring outstanding guest artists such as Warren Chang and Dennis Perrin to teach in the Studios and we are delighted to be working with the Rubicon Theater to offer an exclusive opportunity for our artist members to exhibit their work in Ventura. If you missed the announcement it is not too late to book a place at the VIP reception in the Rubicon Theater to learn more about their performing arts program and what sorts of exhibitions they are looking to host in their gallery. This is a selling opportunity in the heart of the cultural community of Ventura and a unique opportunity to create a body of work in response to the incredible theater presented at the Rubicon. The VIP event is on the 8th of February at 6pm - if you would like to attend please email info@studiochannelislands.org

The Studio's education program was launched in January with the return of the after school art programs and the introduction of a new partnership with Casa Pacifica. The after school programs have quickly filled up and a new middle school workshop has been added to meet the growing demand. The Casa Pacifica partnership is an ambitious program developed to enrich the creative learning of some of our most vulnerable young people. Mary McGill has been introducing the students to ceramics and we are looking forward to seeing the results coming out of the kiln soon.

We are looking forward to the Collectors' Choice exhibition opening on the 4th of March. The deadline for artists to donate work for that exhibition is the 10th of February and we are delighted to announce that Andi Campognone will juror the show and attend the Exhibition Reception. This is a unique opportunity to get your work in-front of one of the most influential curators in southern California.

This coming year is going to be an exciting time as we try new programs and develop new partnerships in preparation for our 20th birthday in 2018. I would like to thank all of the artists who have joined the organization in the last year and especially those who have jumped into the creative life of Studio Channel Islands attending Exhibition Receptions, placing work in the Collectors Club, delivering participatory and learning programs or just throwing some great ideas into the mix. We have nearly doubled our artist membership since last summer and we are really excited about what we can do together to share the creative energy of our community at
Collectors Choice (25th of March) and Arts Alive (26th to the 28th of May).

SparkVoice is a new Camarillo-based organization which launched its first workshop at Studio Channel Islands on January 29.

“We are working to shift girl culture where needed and to support girls developing their confidence, resilience, and creative capacities,”

SparkVoice Director Dr. Karen Lang said. “Growing up in a social media world has unique challenges, but the classic need to feel supported and heard is something girls will always need.”

SparkVoice’s mission is to “strengthen girls’ voices and to support their paths.” The “spark” in the name references to help girls explore and nurture their sparks—talents, interests, and dreams. The “voice” represents coaching in self-worth and self-expression, including creative arts, writing, and speaking skills.

The organization gathers teen girls for weekly mentoring and monthly creative workshops focused on topics which interest and impact girls and young women. Creativity and self-expression are at the heart of SparkVoice, finding and nurturing , as well as coaching in creative development, college and professional pathways.  You can visit
