2017 Golden Leaf Awards
Residents are invited to nominate Durham properties that have outstanding curb appeal for the 2017 Golden Leaf Awards. Awards will be made on April 20, 2017 to recognize new developments, buildings, and landscaping in Durham that provide positive attributes to our built environment. The website www.durhamgoldenleaf.com provides submission in for homeowners, building owners, architects, landscape architects, developers, realtors and anyone involved in design, planning and construction in Durham to submit a nomination. Any projects completed within the last 5 years that have not already received a Golden Leaf Award are eligible. Award Categories are Neighborhood Garden & Landscape, Hearth & Home, Adaptive Reuse – Old Building New Design, Small Development , Large Development, Keep Durham Beautiful, and Sustainable Design.

Durty Bull Brewing/Keep Durham Beautiful Litter Cleanup Party

Come and join us and Durty Bull Brewing for a litter cleanup.We will be cleaning up the blocks around the brewery to help keep our city looking spiffy for ourselves and visitors. Creek Week - March 18-25
Creek Week, set for March 18-25, 2017, offers indoor and outdoor activities to help people of all ages learn more about creeks, rivers, and lakes and how to keep them healthy. Residents have a chance to join litter cleanups, go on a canoe adventure, tour a water reclamation facility, learn from master naturalists on hikes, and more. Creek Week is a community effort by 19 partners working together to provide opportunities for Durham residents to discover and explore local streams, and to do their part to protect water resources. Durham ReUse Rodeo - April 22
In celebration of Earth Day, April 22 nd, Keep Durham Beautiful, the City of Durham Solid Waste Management Department and the Durham County Division of Solid Waste Management, in partnership, will hold Durham’s first ever ReUse Rodeo! A ReUse Rodeo is a “one stop drop” event that allows residents to donate gently used items to multiple nonprofits at the same time in the same place. It will be held outside of the Scrap Exchange, 2050 Chapel Hill Road from 8 am- 2 pm. This is the perfect place to repurpose that heaping pile of “old clothes” or that couch that needs a new home! Durham Earth Day Festival - April 23
The 2017 Durham Earth Day Festival will be Sunday, April 23, noon to 5 pm, at Durham Central Park, 501 Foster Street. Enjoy a day filled with an eclectic mix of music, food, and hands-on environmental education activities! We are recruiting Waste Warrior volunteers of all ages to help reduce waste at the festival by serving two-hour shifts at our waste stations to teach attendees which items belong in the recycling, compost and trash. Training, goodies and snacks will be provided to volunteers. We need your help make this a waste-wise festival- Sign up to volunteer here. Volunteers serve in teams of two so buddies or parent-child teams are encouraged to sign up together.

Keep Durham Beautiful Executive Director Tania Dautlick was named by Keep America Beautiful as a Certified Community Environment Professional during their national conference on January 25. The three-year professional certification program trains Keep America Beautiful affiliate staff through coursework, case studies and literature reviews to identify patterns and solutions in behavior to end littering, improve recycling and beautifying communities.

Keep Durham Beautiful Sustainability Specialist, Erin Victor, shared our Waste Wise Event program with fellow Keep America Beautiful affiliates last month at the National Keep America Beautiful Conference in Washington D.C. The "Steel This" session highlighted successful projects from 6 KAB affiliates; encouraging conference attendees to bring back new project ideas to their respectful communities across the nation.

Keep Durham Beautiful 2017 Bulb Blitz
Volunteer groups planted approximately 6,500 bulbs throughout Durham this past month. Bulb varieties included an assortment of tulips, irises, hostas, daylilies, daisies, and geraniums. All bulbs were planted in areas visible to the public so be on the look out for these beautiful flowers as they start blooming this spring and summer!
Bulbs were provided by Keep Durham Beautiful in partnership with Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful thanks to a generous donation from Gardens Alive.
