Dear Friends,

Our garlic is now ready for sale! And as promised you are the first to hear the news.  We feel a sense of loyalty to our newsletter subscribers to let you know about what is happening.  As exciting as this may sound, we do have some bad news.

Due to moving our entire operation and having out first baby we have grown a smaller crop of garlic this year.  We have graded everything and do not have enough to sell seed stock this year. We are very apologetic about this, and hope to have high quality seed available next year.  We do have high quality seed stock available for our Elephant Garlic, Shallots and Multiplying Onions.  For our main crop garlic, we only have Eating Grade which is very nice, but the bulbs and cloves are smaller than what we would want to label as seed.  We have included a standard matchbook in the photos on our website so you can get a sense of the size.  Of course it can be planted and we will leave that up to you, the customer to decide.

If you do decide to plant it, we would recommend really paying attention to feeding the soil and the crop during the growing season.  Compost and manure as well as lime are good things to add at planting time.  We can’t stress enough feeding the soil throughout the growth and for maximum benefit try a foliar on the leaves to get nutrition straight to the plant for a quick and easy feed.  This is especially important if you are unsure about the fertility in your garden. We use Environmental Fertiliser's Foliar Feeds to great success.

The season in general is shaping up to be very unusual indeed.  Between the strange weather patterns and the new climate we have been left scratching our heads a few times.  For example we had two light frosts the first week in January! This is very out of the ordinary and has left of thinking we will be building a large tunnel house in the future.  We have had scorching hot days, very little rain and then really cold nights.  This has left a lot of the summer crops like courgettes a bit confused.  A great success to mention is our tomatoes!  Wow, what a great tasting beautiful crop we have had this season, which should see a few new tasty ones added to the range next year.

Things to sow now:

February is an ideal time to sow seeds for your winter garden.  We planted last just a few days ago Silverbeet Fordhook Giant, Kale Cavalo Nero, Salad Burnet, Arugala Wild, Rocket, Mizuna, Tat Soi, Lettuces – Winter, Tree, Speckled, Odell’s and Mignonette,  Broccoli Little Marvel, Leek Lyon, Sweet Peas, Lupins, and Calendula. And we direct sowed straight into the garden, Beetroot Detroit Red, Carrot White Belgim and Oxheart.

We often follow the moon calendar in Organic NZ magazine for inspiration on sowing times.
