WOMEX 17 Call for Proposals Now Open!

It's time, the WOMEX 17 Call for Proposals is now open! WOMEX 17 is heading to Katowice, Poland from 25-29 October 2017 and we want your proposals – if you want to perform as a showcase artist or DJ, present your film or spread your knowledge as a conference speaker or expert mentor at WOMEX 17, let us know by applying now! To find out how, read on – and please note the earlier deadlines this year.

In this newsletter, we can also reveal the 7 Samurai – the independent jury that will painstakingly select the 2017 programme from the submitted applications – as well as the first international showcases of Atlantic Music Expo 2017. We also start the celebrations for Piranha Arts' 30th anniversary, and we've got some Worldwide Community News to share.

We're looking forward to reading, watching and listening to all of your fantastic WOMEX 17 proposals!

Kind regards from Jim and Paul, on behalf of the whole WOMEX team.

Propose Your Programme Now!

That's right: if you want to showcase your music, discuss your burning topic, screen your film or spread your knowledge, your time is now!

Everyone active in the global music scene can turn in a proposal! The programme of WOMEX is made by the global music community spanning across all continents, from traditional and folk circles to all other alternative and culturally open-minded scenes. Proposals can be made only via the online proposal system run by Brumedje.

Proposals can be made in four categories: Showcases, DJ Summit, Film and Conference & Mentor. The deadline for proposals is Friday, 17 March 2017. Please note that this is earlier than usual! Early birds can get a discount on administration fees before Friday, 24 February (applications for conference sessions, DJ-cases and short films are free). For film proposals only, the deadline for applications is Friday, 31 March.

To find more information about the proposals process, see the Submit a Proposal page on our website, or to propose your music or content now, you can go straight to the proposal site.

Piranha Arts Turns 30!

Piranha Arts will celebrate 30 years in 2017, starting with the 30th anniversary of the first concert we ever produced on 27 January 1987. More memorable dates of our inaugural activities are the first Piranha Records release (April/May 1987) and the birth of the formerly revolutionary, and nowadays much debated term ‘world music’ (June/July 1987). Take a short trip down our memory lane with the 30 Years of Piranha pageflow.

Samurai for '17

As always, the programme for WOMEX 17 will be chosen by our distinguished Jury – the 7 Samurai. This independent, international panel are made up of seven of the most experienced professionals and experts on the world music scene – five of whom will be responsible for the Showcase Festival, and two who will select the conference programme. The 2017 Conference Jury are:

  • Kaisha Johnson (USA)
  • Mounir Kabbaj (Morocco/France)
And the 2017 Showcase Jury are:
  • Sofyann Ben Youssef (Tunisia/Beligum)
  • David Chavez (USA)
  • Minna Huuskonen (Finland)
  • Martyna Markowska (Poland)
  • Carlos Seixas (Portugal)

For more information about each of this year's 7 Samurai, see the Jury page on our website.

We're also pleased to announce, returning from his fantastic job with WOMEX 16, that Guy Morley will again curate the DJ Summit for WOMEX 17. Guy is a seasoned member of the UK world music scene and long-time WOMEX delegate, and will craft the DJ Summit from the proposals that represents club sounds from across the world. Apply for your DJ-case now!
