FOC Working Group Updates
Working Group 1 (WG1): focus on outreach and operationalizing the recommendations
The Group has met at both the Freedom Online Conference and at the Internet Governance Forum in Guadalajara to discuss priorities in the next six months. As a result, the Group has identified the following priority areas:
- Outreach on the WG1 recommendations for human rights-respecting cybersecurity policy, spreading the word beyond the FOC and synthesising the recommendations into a more digestible format;
- Presentation of the recommendations in various fora and through conversations with different institutions including RightsCon, the World Social Forum, UNESCO, Council of Europe, the Global Forum on Cyber Expertise, IFF Nigeria;
- Looking at next steps on how to implement the recommendations, with one idea being the development of a diagnostic tool to help policymakers and advocates measure compliance with the recommendations;
- Capturing lessons learned in the process of working together as a working group of the FOC and communicating these to the Coalition.
Working Group 2 (WG2): blog series on rule of law and human rights online
The Group is focusing its time on creating a series of blogs looking at key issues in the rule of law and human rights online debates. The Group aims to produce a short paper summarising the work of this series and communicating the Group’s vision of what the rule of law online means.
Working Group 3 (WG3): collaboration and partnership on government transparency
WG3 met at the Freedom Online Conference and plans to build on its government transparency work from now until the Stockholm Internet Forum. Members of WG3 are exploring ways to partner directly with FOC governments, possibly through collaboration on Open Government Partnership national action plans.
