Monthly e-newsletter
February 2017

Dear <<First Name>>,

This month's executive committee message is from Jack Levinson, Immediate Past President:

I am grateful to see and feel "community" at Shabbat services.  While the meaning and the experience of Shabbat services is unique to each of us, the spiritual enrichment, reflection, education and comfort in being together is plural. Shabbat starts with careful preparation and work from our rabbis and cantors and support from lay leaders and staff, but it is made meaningful because you are there. I believe this is why our Shabbat community is growing and thriving.

When we gather next weekend to celebrate the installation of Rabbi Klass and the annual Sadie Levin Scholar-in-Residence with Rabbi Paul Kipnes, we celebrate as a community with the great gift of Shabbat.

Every Shabbat celebration is the result of the deep commitment of lay leaders, congregants and staff. Thanks to everyone, especially Norman Levin and his family, for making this Shabbat even more special.

On behalf of the executive leadership, see you at Shabbat!

Parenting has never been easy - but in a culture that encourages screen time more than face time, how can we make sure that our children stay connected to what really matters in life? Now is the time to deepen the conversations about spiritual balance and emotional wholeness, because later, as our children (and grandchildren) grow, they often try to push us away at the very moment that they most need our guidance. Join Rabbi Paul Kipnes as he guides us with five Jewish values– time-tested wisdom–about how to share our wisdom in ways that our children will hear. Rabbi Kipnes co-authored the book, Jewish Spiritual Parenting: Wisdom, Activities, Rituals and Prayers for Raising Children with Spiritual Balance and Emotional Wholeness, with his wife Michelle November.

CLERGY CONNECTION

Double Chai by Cantor Mary R. Thomas

I have a birthday at the beginning of this month. I hadn’t given it too much thought before because it isn’t a milestone and, at a point, birthdays that aren’t milestones seem to become days like the rest. I’ve already had enough non-milestone birthdays as an adult to know that this is true. Milestones are times for parties, vacations, hemming and hawing about getting older, the reassessment of goals - or, at the very least, answering other people’s questions about whether or not you are hemming and hawing or reassessing your goals. My non-milestone birthday dreams used to be about big fancy dinners with lots and lots of friends and, now, I am happily contented to know that a dinner out with my husband during the adjacent week, a day of texts and facebook messages from my friends and family far and near, and if I’m really lucky, a homemade birthday crown from my kids will be more than enough. The first year they gave me a birthday crown - so I could celebrate just like them at the Charlotte Jewish Preschool - is probably my best birthday memory in recent years.

What I’ve realized, however, is that this birthday is a milestone. It is double chai. Twice 18. Twice Life. Read more>>
STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Rabbi Dusty Klass

As Rabbi Klass' Installation Weekend approaches, we thought it would be a great opportunity to learn a little more about her:
  1. What do you like most about working at TBE? I like wandering the halls and seeing just how much is happening. I like the variety of people that come through our doors and how at home they all seem to be regardless of age, color, or religion.
  2. Share something you're looking forward to in 2017? Learning, learning, learning. Hanging out with Sheva. Finally organizing my office.
  3. Describe what you do without using your job title. Learn and teach, pray and lead prayer, hear stories and share stories.
  4. Who is your favorite author or songwriter (or both). I feel like the answer to this question has changed a lot over the years - currently author: Alice Hoffman, songwriter: Sufjan Stevens.
  5. What is your all-time favorite movie? Benny and Joon
  6. When you are not at TBE, how do you spend your free time (hobbies?) Biking (well, movement of any kind, really); Cooking
  7. How long have you lived in the Charlotte area? Since June 23
LAST MONTH'S HIGHLIGHTS

Sisterhood Color Event

On Thursday, Jan. 12, several women gathered at the home of Caren Hill to enjoy food and drinks during a presentation by Teal Michel, interior designer. Teal presented historical references and cultural reactions to color. She also discussed the effects of different colors on our mood and the implications for use in interior design.

Creating Poetry from Sacred Texts: Sheva Family Learning Day

Using phrases from the Torah portion, Shemot, our Sheva (7th grade) students and their parents created beautiful and spiritual poems during Sheva Family Learning Day.
Mountain of God
Holy ground
Marvelous sight
Moses
Here I am
An Angel of God
You stand on holy ground
Remove your sandals
Afraid to look at God
Here I am
Here I am
Angel of God
Which you stand on holy ground
Look at this marvelous sight
Remove your sandals
Bush all aflame
Blazing
Yet the bush was not consumed.

Thank you so much for the generous donations of socks, underwear, clothes and other supplies for the Sterling Elementary health room. This helps the teachers, students and families more than you know!

If you didn't get the chance to help, you still can. Here is how:
  1. Donate clothing or individually-wrapped snacks
  2. Decorate bags and assemble summer fun packs
  3. Help teachers by assembling games or preparing class sets
  4. Help clean up the gym, library and art room

Mitzvot & Art: The Blessing Box Project

Learn more about the Blessing Box Project, a meaningful project given unanimous approval and endorsement by the Tzedek Council.

About Face Charlotte has made "blessing boxes" available to TBE families. Each blessing box comes with 100 slips of paper for you to write down ways that you have helped others or done mitzvot. About Face Charlotte will use them to create two art installations that represent efforts our community is making to come together and heal in the wake of the events of last September. Order a box online, or look for boxes and slips at Religious School and at Porch events.

Congregation-wide Service Day:
Help needed for Mitzvah Day

Mitzvah Day is set for Sunday, May 21!  We still need a few captains to lead fun and fairly simple projects. Please email Lisa Moreland or Meri Siegel to help or ask for more information.

Shalach Manot: Volunteer for the TBE Purim Bag Project

Time to start thinking about Purim! Every year, TBE volunteers deliver 200 Shalach Manot Purim bags to our seniors (over 75+) and home-bound congregants. This great project requires assistance with shopping, assembling bags on March 7, and delivering bags during the March 6-10 time frame. We also welcome financial contributions towards hamantashen, fruit and candy. Please email Karen Greenblatt to volunteer or contribute.
YOUTH & TEENS

Teens Celebrate Respect Week - February 13-17

All young people deserve safe and healthy relationships. During “Respect Week”, TBE, along with other Jewish agencies and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community, is promoting local and national programs and events. Encourage the teen in your life to:
  • Wear #Orange4LOVE on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
  • Attend a free event at LABEL on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 4 to 7:00 pm. There will be dancing with DJ Amazn, food by The Improper Pig and free giveaways.
Learn more nationally, or follow #TDVAClt on social media for local events.

Shalom Park Freedom School: Summer Volunteer Opportunities for Youth & Teens

If your student is looking for a meaningful way to volunteer this summer, suggest the Shalom Park Freedom School. There are two opportunities:
  • Teen Board – Teen Board members must work as school assistants for at least two successive weeks between June 19 and July 27. Email Jennifer Newman or Lisa Garfinkle for an application.
  • Young Teen Experience – This is ideal for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders looking for a B’nei Mitzvah project or community service hours. For more information, email Eileen Davis.
