Waiting game proves too much for intermediates

Commiserations to Clarecastle/Ballyea's intermediate camogie squad who, after a three month wait, had lost their momentum and proved ringrusty against All-Ireland Junior Club finalists Scariff-Ogonnelloe on Sunday.

Intermediate Camogie Championship Final
Scariff-Ogonnelloe 4-13 Clarecastle/Ballyea 1-07

at Knockalisheen Park, Meelick

The long-awaited Intermediate decider finally took place on Sunday, with Munster Junior Club champions Scariff-Ogonnelloe justifying their tag as strong favourites to reclaim the Fr Murray Cup for the first time since 2013.
In a tightly fought first quarter, scores on both sides came from placed balls through Mairead Scanlan and Lauren Tuohy. However, Scariff-Ogonnelloe would put some daylight between the sides when Rachael Minogue raided for a goal while Aoife Power added a point to move four clear.
Clarecastle/Ballyea responded with the next two points but Scanlan (3) and Power would combine for four unanswered points to ensure a 1-7 to 0-4 half-time cushion for the East Clare side.
Clarecastle/Ballyea scored the first point of the second half from a Tuohy free before Scariff-Ogonnelloe upped the ante once more, thanks to good play from the full back line of Leanne Horan, Marian O'Brien and Sarah Skelly resulting in Scanlan scoring three points, two from frees, and Power adding one from play.
Clarecastle/Ballyea replied with a brace through Doireann Murphy but they would be quickly wiped out when lively corner-forward Sarah O'Donnell pounced for goal while Danielle Sheedy added a point to put eight between the teams.
With momentum firmly behind them, Scariff-Ogonnelloe cemented victory with further goals from substitute Sorcha O’Donnell and Scanlan sandwiching a consolation goal for Emma O’Connell from a 20 metre free.
Clare Camogie Chairman Joe Robbins presented the Fr. Liam Murray Cup to captain Aisling Corbett as Scariff-Ogonnelloe can now look forward to competing in the senior championship in the coming season.

Clare exit Munster League

Despite overcoming Waterford in Dungarvan last Sunday, Clare's reign at Munster League champions eventually ended on Wednesday evening in Sixmilebridge when beaten by a sharper Cork side by 0-19 to 0-15.
The Banner's threadbare side appeared warweary but will get an opportunity to avenge the defeat when the sides meet again in the opening round of the National League in Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday, February 11th.
Bobby Duggan and Stephen O'Halloran both made their first competitive starts of the season against Waterford last Sunday, with Bobby firing four points in a 2-19 to 3-13 victory while he equalled that tally against Cork on Wednesday.
Bobby and Gearoid Ryan along with selector Ken Ralph were also part of UL's Fitzgibbon Cup opening victory over CIT on Tuesday as the Limerick college ran out comfortable 2-23 to 0-16 winners. Bobby came on as a late sub in the victory for UL who face NUI Galway this Thursday in UL at 2pm.
Also on Tuesday in The Ragg, Stephen O'Halloran scored 1-2 for the Garda College in their 6-23 to 0-07 victory over Athlone IT in the opening round of the Ryan Cup. Niall Quinn, who is currently injured, is also part of the Garda College panel who have a bye this week for Round 2.

The hugely successful 'Operation Trepidation', a new fitness initiative for non playing members, is now operating twice a week to assist participants in at least making one session.
Male and female newcomers are welcome on Mondays from 9-9.50pm and Wednesdays from 8.10-9pm at the Clarecastle GAA's indoor training facility.

St Flannan's College advanced to the last four of the  Frewen Cup (Munster Junior A Football Championship) following their 3-10 to 2-08 victory over De La Sale Macroom in Ballyagran on Wednesday.
Darragh Healy lined out at wing-back for the Under 16.5 footballers who now meet St Brendan's College, Killarney in the semi-final next Wednesday.
St Flannan's senior footballers, backed by Clarecastle trio Cian Donnelly, Niall Galvin and Daragh Dolan also face the Kerry superpowers in the semi-final of the Corn Ui Mhuiri (Munster Senior A Football Championship) next Saturday (February 4th) in Rathkeale. In a repeat of last year's semi-final, the Ennis college will hope to exact revenge on St Brendan's who secured both Munster and All-Ireland honours in 2016.

Brian Cody has condemned the "crazy" inter-county calendar and backed the Club Players' Association's (CPA) proposals to "fix the fixtures" for club players.

The 11-time All-Ireland-winning Kilkenny hurling boss has thrown his weight behind a "more condensed" inter-county fixture schedule, as suggested by the recently-formed CPA, and suggests marrying the club and county calendars together.
"Club players should get the time to play their games at the important times of the year, particularly in the summer. The county scene waiting six weeks for the next game is crazy really, the season has to be condensed," the 62-year-old said.

"There has to be a real coming-together of county and club; it's pointless saying just draw up your inter-county calendar and then having a look at the club. You have to look at both together and see how you can marry both."
The passionate James Stephens clubman also feels it's "viciously dangerous" to have inter-county players away from their clubs for long periods, believing they are losing what propelled them to the county scene because fixtures have not adapted to changing demands.

"The majority of players are club players and it's just viciously dangerous to have county players losing the sense of who they are and where they come from," Cody said.
"They get into the county team because they're leaders with their clubs but as soon as they stop being leaders for their clubs, and it's very easy to lose track of the club, they lose the right to be county players.

"It's essential that club players are catered for and the whole thing should be looked at. I don't have the answers but it's essential that we don't just keep going doing the same thing because it has always been done down through the years."
