Call for funding proposals: Transformations to Sustainability
Over €13 million available for social science led research on Transformations to Sustainability. Outline proposals are invited by April 5th 2017.
Climate change, environmental degradation and resource pressures have created unprecedented challenges for societies worldwide, with Low- and Middle-income countries (LMICs) often the most affected.
The slow progress on responding to global environmental change and the need for global development has led to increasing emphasis, both in research and policy, on the need to go beyond the study and encouragement of incremental change.
There is a need for more fundamental transformations in the way societies interact with each other and with the natural environment. What's needed is a comprehensive and concerted research initiative that can boost research on transformations to sustainability, and catalyse new kinds of solutions to environmental and social challenges.
The Belmont Forum, NORFACE and the ISSC together as the Transformations to Sustainability funders, are therefore launching the new funding programme 'Transformations to Sustainability'(T2S).
The funding call includes a total pool of at least €13 million over a period of three years, for international projects led by the social sciences or humanities. Inter- and Trans- disciplinary approaches are strongly encouraged.
Outline proposals must be submitted by 5 April 2017.

Road to 2018
Following the in-principle vote in favour of a merger between ISSC and the International Council for Science (ICSU) in October 2016, work on developing a joint vision and structure for a new, merged organization is progressing apace.
Members of the Strategy Working Group and Transition Task Force that will develop frameworks for a possible ICSU-ISSC merger have been appointed, and first meetings of the two groups are taking place this week.
In the interests of an open and transparent process, documentation pertinent to the work of the two groups and the upcoming meetings is available here.
The Strategy Working Group began its meeting on Monday with a high-level panel discussion on 'Setting the challenge: the future for global science.' Panellists were Craig Calhoun, President of the Berggruen Institute; Robert Dijkgraaf, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton; Philip Campbell, Editor-in-Chief, Nature; Flavia Schlegel, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences at UNESCO; Nada Al-Nashif, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO and Helga Nowotny, Professor Emerita of Social Studies of Science at ETH in Zurich.

2017 Stein Rokkan Prize
The ISSC, ECPR, and the University of Bergen invite nominations for the 2017 Stein Rokkan Prize for Comparative Social Science Research before February 15 2017.
The prize is open to substantial and original contributions in comparative social science research. Nominated works can be an unpublished manuscript of book length, a printed book, or collected works published no more than two years before the award year. Edited volumes are not eligible. The winner receives a diploma and a $5,000 award.

Agenda 2030: Poverty, Climate Change and Sustainability
PHD COURSE at Bergen Summer Research School 2017.
In June 2017, CROP, together with local and international partners, will organize one of the parallel PhD level courses that will make up this year’s Bergen Summer Research School (BSRS) at the University of Bergen. Global Challenges is the overarching theme for the summer school, and from 12-22 June 2017, international experts will gather in Bergen to explore some of the greatest challenges facing contemporary society. Apply by March 1st 2017.

ACSS Small Grants Program 2017 – Call for Applications
The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is pleased to announce the first cycle of its Small Grants Program on the themes of “Youth” and “Spatial Inequalities.” The ACSS Small Grants Program (SGP) is a funding opportunity that aims to support scholars and professionals in the Arab region undertaking four kinds of activities: conference presentations, internships, research on small-scale projects, and organizing workshops. Small grants averaging $4,000 will be available to individual Arab researchers and activists residing in the Arab region, whose work focuses on Arab societies. Applications for the first cycle of funding must be received by February 3rd 2017.

The successful candidate will be effective in further raising the visibility and value of Future Earth, and attracting funding for this implementation.
