Image of the Month: CT Coronary Angiogram
Our February Image of the Month, courtesy of Dr Michelle Williams and Prof David Newby, shows a three dimensional reconstruction of a computed tomography (CT) coronary angiogram performed as part of the SCOT-HEART trial. This CT identified severe coronary artery disease in the right coronary artery and enabled appropriate treatment to be organised for the patient.

All 2017 Image of the Month submissions are eligible for the Image of the Year award prize of £80, or a £40 lucky draw prize from among remaining entries!

SINAPSE Member Profile: Helen Marshall
The Member Profile section of our newsletter is currently being used to introduce PhD students with funding support from SINAPSE.
Helen Marshall will be starting her PhD studentship at the University of Edinburgh in April 2017 under the supervision of Prof Neil Roberts, funded by Siemens, Mentholatum and SINAPSE. Her project aims to use Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE), a combination of sound waves and MRI imaging, to investigate the mechanical properties of the brain during development. Making use of world leading MRE equipment at the University of Edinburgh Clinical Research Imaging Centre, she will analyse the safety and effectiveness of this technique pre and postnatally before using it to look into the mechanical properties of developing brain tissue. If successful, the applications of this technique could extend from maximising developmental potential to more accurate diagnosis of degenerative brain disease and damage. Helen completed her undergraduate degree in Anatomy at the University of Glasgow where she competed with the University rowing, track cycling and Rugby Club alongside her studies. Thanks to this PhD she is hoping to pursue a career in research and academia and is eager to see the MRE technique used more widely as a diagnostic and research tool.
