Our G-122 Beacon Board, a GPS-enabled surface location device, was awarded a U.S. patent, our third, for its unique functionality. This recovery aid fits easily inside glass or polystyrene spheres as small as 10” diameter, and provides an unambiguous and reliable means to determine the location of an undersea vehicle on the surface within a radius of up to 8 nautical miles of the ship.

Global Ocean Design Visits Shanghai, China

Last fall, Shanghai Ocean University’s Professor Weicheng Cui invited Kevin and Michelle Hardy to give a series of lectures on the hadal zone explorations of the U.S. Navy’s bathyscaph Trieste program, the history of Scripps Institution of Oceanography/UCSD hadal explorations, and James Cameron’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGE Expedition.  Professor Cui is Director of the SOU’s Hadal Science and Technology Research Center (HAST) in Shanghai, PRC.  Professor Weicheng Cui generously hosted the travel.  HAST is developing a family of hadal depth landers, AUVs, HROVs, and manned submersible capabilities over the next several years.
