Case Western Reserve University and Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein of Brazil Hold Health Research Symposium

This week, Case Western Reserve University, including the School of Medicine, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, and Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo, Brazil, held a three-day symposium, Building a Global Partnership in Education, Research and Innovation, focusing on biomedical research, innovation and health education, with an emphasis on global health issues of importance across the Americas.

The symposium featured presentations and panel discussions with faculty members and clinicians from the two organizations. It also included perspectives from representatives of governmental agencies and foundations. “We have been looking forward to the symposium with much anticipation,” said Sidney Klajner, president of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. “Participants were able to explore areas of mutual strength and interest as well as identify opportunities to enhance and expand our current collaborations.”

Topics included cardiology, HIV, infectious disease and global health, translational research, medical innovations, and innovative curriculum for medical and nursing education.

“To welcome our colleagues and friends from Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein here to celebrate after so many years of planning was a true reflection of the dedication and effort of everyone involved, both in Brazil and at CWRU,” said Vice Provost for International Affairs David Fleshler. “I commend everyone for their investment in this relationship and I enjoyed celebrating the strong relationships and foundation for the research collaboration we’ve built together.”

Also in attendance were academic and administrative leaders of  FAPESP, the São Paulo Research Foundation, as well as Kevin Bialy, International Health Program Officer for the Western Hemisphere, for the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health.

CWRU Ranks in Top 30 in Percentage of Students Studying Abroad

For the second year in a row, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) ranks among the nation's top 40 doctorate-granting universities in the percentage of its undergraduate students studying abroad, according to a new report.

With nearly 40.5% of its undergraduate students studying abroad in academic year 2014-15, CWRU was ranked in the 29th spot in the "Open Doors 2016 Report on International Educational Exchange." The annual publication names the top 40 doctorate-granting universities; this year marks Case Western Reserve's second-ever appearance on the list.

"Studying abroad not only provides an understanding of another culture, it is also a boost as students are beginning their internship and career searches," said Executive Director of International Affairs Molly Watkins. "The unique experience is such a standout on resumes and applications because employers like to see students who are independent and able to successfully navigate new and challenging environments."

The annual "Open Doors Report" is published through the partnership between the not-for-profit Institute of International Education (IIE) and the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

CWRU Awards Six Study Abroad Scholarships to Underrepresented Minority Students

Last spring, CWRU received a $7,500 Generation Study Abroad grant from the Institute of International Education to support new scholarships for underrepresented minority students (URM). The Office of Education Abroad matched the funding and worked closely with the Office of Multicultural Affairs to award six think: possibilities scholarships of $2,500 each to URM students at CWRU.

"The Office of Education Abroad is committed to increasing the diversity of students participating on our programs," said Molly Watkins, Executive Director for International Affairs. "These scholarships help make study abroad opportunities possible for CWRU students from backgrounds typically underrepresented in study abroad."

Students are using the scholarships to cover the cost of tuition, books, travel related to study, service learning, and internships abroad during the spring 2017 semester. Scholarship winners are currently studying in various countries, including England, Ireland, Morocco, and New Zealand.

"Studying abroad is more important than ever in today's world and to today's CWRU students," wrote scholarship winner Nailah Ramos Mathews in her application essay. After speaking with friends who already studied abroad, she heard stories that she "had yet to experience but was immediately hungry for."
