February 2017: The Wimpact + Girls Against Poster Campaign
Wow. What an, uh, interesting start to 2017. It a bit of an understatement to say that there is a lot of horrible stuff happening in our world right now. It is beyond easy to feel a complete sense of powerlessness in this moment, and incapable of making positive change. After all, it is always easier to do nothing than something. That's not what we are about, though.
For our call-to-action this month, The Wimpact is partnering with combatants of harassment and overall badasses, the UK's Girls Against. In joining together, we are hoping to double the effectiveness of this call-to-action. We are asking you to get up, get out and do something! More specifically, we are asking you to make your local music communities safer for everyone.
How are we all going to do that? First, go to either The Wimpact's website or Girls Against's Twitter and print some copies of our joint poster. This poster offers steps on how to get assistance or report an uncomfortable situation (harassment, assault or otherwise) that you or a friend may have experienced at a show (or gigs for our UK friends). Also, there’s a good dose of bystander intervention tips. What's not to love?
Now, here's where this gets even cooler. After you print the posters, go to you favorite local music venues and talk to the folks there. Explain a bit about our collective goal of making venues safer and then ask if you can hang these posters in the restrooms at the venue.
If we all go out and get venues on board, we will have done tangible work to prevent harassment and assault at shows and support those who have already had these experiences. We don't know about you, but this has us feel pretty powerful, and definitely capable of making a change.
