President's Letter:

Dear CHMTA Chapter-
Our long time treasurer, Margery Gates, will not be continuing on the board of CHMTA.  We sincerely thank Margery for her valued service and contribution to the chapter for many years.

Due to this vacancy, I am urgently submitting a request to our entire membership that a volunteer join our board and serve as Treasurer for at least the remainder of 2016-17.  It is an important role – one that  needs to be filled for us to continue functioning smoothly.  It would really help us out and you do not have to be an accountant.  Margery would be happy to help coordinate the functions of the position.  Please let us know of your interest by February 3.

Our new CHMTA Festival format promises to be another exciting event offering.  The board and festival committee have decided to focus on creating an interactive learning event in which students, teachers and parents share the experience of performance, listening, and critique.  I am sure you will want your students to participate and be inspired by the new format as well!  We would like to thank UNC for their continued generosity.

Our next student recital is in February and our next board meeting will be February 21 from 11:00AM to 12:30 PM in meeting room C at the Chapel Hill Public Library.

Thanks for all that you do to make CHMTA a terrific chapter and happy teaching!

New!  CHMTA Non-Competitive Festival March 11

This spring, we are offering a non-competitive format for the Festival, in which students perform in a masterclass setting. Students will be organized by age into groups of three to five, with parents, teachers and judge/clinician in the room. Each student or ensemble in the group will perform and receive written comments and a rating. After each performance, the judge/clinician will work with the student(s), sharing ideas in a mini-lesson format.

Students aged 5-18 are welcome to participate and perform any pieces they would like. Solos and ensembles are welcome. The performance time restrictions will be 5-10 minutes, depending of the age of the student. We will have information and forms on the website by the end of the month.

Plan now to enter your students in this wonderful performing opportunity! The date of the Festival is Saturday, March 11. The registration deadline is Friday, February 17.

Adult Music Soirée:

Do you have adult music students that would be interested in participating in a low key performance gathering? Do you know teachers or students with a piano in their home and adequate space that would be willing to host an Adult Soiree? A potluck type informal gathering to encourage adult music students at all levels (especially beginners) would be a great thing for our community, and a fun opportunity for teachers and adult students to get to know one another. Please email Lisa Furukawa Monroe if you have adult students that might be interested and/or know of someone that would be willing to host a soirée. Furukawalisa@gmail.com

Summer Jazz Camp

Summerjazz Camp is looking for teens, ages 12-17, who play an instrument, and are interested in jazz. All instrumentalists are welcome, even if not on traditional jazz instruments. Musicians will work on classic big band pieces, combo standards, and contemporary jazz. The camp runs 8:30-3 for two weeks starting June 26 and will culminate with one or more performances on July 7. No experience in jazz is necessary, but applicants should be comfortable reading from sheet music. Participants should also be ready to improve their improvisation skills. Each day will include band rehearsals as well as games and other musical activities. Cost $450 for both weeks. www.summerjazz.org

Greg McCallum Scholarship Fund

Hi Everyone,

It's just unbelievable that it has almost been a year since our dear Greg passed.  Though he is still missed terribly, it is our hope that by establishing an endowed scholarship to honor his life and work, we will feel connected to him forever.

Please feel free to share the attached Call for Contributions with any dear ones who knew him!  Since I'm no longer in touch with the chapters of the NCMTA, if anyone could help get the word out to more friends, musicians, teachers and members of his church, that would be so appreciated.  The Gregory McCallum Memorial Scholarship for Piano is meant to remember Greg's path by helping another NC senior high school student with aspirations to pursue piano as a music major in North Carolina or elsewhere realize their dreams.  (Greg studied at University of North Carolina, University of Maryland and Eastman School of Music).

Please find details below describing how you can help.  All donations are tax deductible.

Happiest of Holidays to everyone and here's to a 2017 full of good health, good music, hope and contentment!
