I have been involved with NMWIF for over 10 years. My wife, Jo Edna Boldin, introduced me when she joined the NMWIF Founding Board. She discussed the process of writing by-laws, mission statements, applying for non-profit status and creating committees that would serve our small membership. All of which had to be under the umbrella of Women in Film and Television International’s (WIFTI) rules and regulations.
How do we better serve our membership? How do we attract new members? Can we continue to find strong leaders for our board? What checks and balances must be created to insure we do not alienate our membership? Can we lead with compassion while still offering quality events for our community? What can we do to create more equality for women in the industry? And most important, can we have fun while serving? Over the years, all of these questions have been addressed by the NMWIF Board.
In 2010 I became the administrative assistant while Trish Lopez was President. We had a healthy spreadsheet of member information but no system was in place to manage it. We didn’t know who or when someone paid their membership dues or if they received a member card. I was given a pile of papers and 10 hours per week to find a solution to this chaos. It took about 3 years to clean up and develop a system that could manage our growing membership. Each new board has incorporated more technology to help manage our growing database.
This is the last NMWIF newsletter that I will publish because I am stepping down from my position as admin. I have developed great friendships while serving under 4 Presidents and multiple boards. I have read over 7,000 emails and helped publish 66 newsletters, which has expanded my computer skills and enriched my knowledge of the New Mexico film and media community. I know all of your names because I entered your information into our database and I addressed each envelope when mailing your NMWIF member card. You are awesome! You continue to surprise me with your compelling storytelling! NMWIF is stronger and better because of each past and present member and every woman who has served on the board.
I will now focus on my art making and continue to build my home and life in Taos. My artwork was recently accepted into Waxlander Gallery on Canyon Road in Santa Fe. I am excited to get back to my studio full-time and hope you will go visit this wonderful gallery when you are in the area. My muse is calling and I now say farewell. It has been an honor to serve each of you!
With much love and peace,
Reina

NMWIF Screenwriting Groups
Back in November at the Film and Media conference, NMWIF’s Albuquerque and Santa Fe Screenwriting Groups were mentioned several times as an example of a great educational and networking resource. By meeting and working with experienced writers in the profession, newcomers have the chance to hone their skills and meet folks with professional success and connections to help them take their writing careers to the next level. I had the chance to talk with the heads of both of our writers groups, Jim Sea in Albuquerque and Bradd Hopkins in Santa Fe to find out more about what they are doing and how more people can get involved.
First of all, where do your groups meet, when do they meet and is their a participation fee?
Jim Sea, Albuquerque –We’re meeting in the basement community room at the Horn Family YMCA at 4901 Indian School Rd NE, in Albuquerque on alternating Mondays of each month. On months that we have a fifth Monday we meet there to hear a full table read of one of our member’s scripts. Because we are a non-profit community group we get the venue for free so there is no charge to attend these meetings at this time.
Bradd Hopkins, Santa Fe – We’re meeting at La Montanita Co-Op at the Solana Shopping Center, 913 W Alameda St. We also meet on alternating Monday's and we try not to coincide with the Albuquerque group that way a writer could conceivably attend 4 meetings alternating cities and Mondays each month and we’re not having to pay for the room right now either so participation is also free to all comers.
What do you think writers are getting out of these groups?
Santa Fe – Two primary things, to become a better writer and to become a better marketer. We’re trying to help the writer to think about their product from the producer’s point of view. We usually spend the first hour on how to improve our writing skills or writing with the producer in mind, often reviewing articles about writing that I may have sent to participants in advance, then the last hour and a half we spend on table reads of our writers works with “benevolent” criticism. We want the feedback to focus on things that the writer might do to change the readability and marketability of the screenplay. Some of the topics we’ve explored recently are the difference between agents and managers, adapting books for the screen, WGA registry and how to option a screenplay.
Albuquerque – We’re looking to build on connections with development executives by finding out what story genres intersect with what production companies. We’re coaching our writers on how to present a package in a form that producers want to see it. Our new idea that we’re tossing around is creating a “writers room” among all of us in the group to collaboratively create, say the first two episodes of a series. Bradd inserts, “I want the Tylenol concession on that.” Jim laughs and continues…I think it would be a great real world social experiment in collaborative creation.
How many actors are in your groups and how are they utilized?
Santa Fe – We are always looking for more participation from actors to read for us and so we’ve been trying to schedule them in advance. I think there are a couple of real benefits that actors get from attending the meetings. One, they get some solid practice at cold reading and two they get insights into what goes into developing a script and how lines they want to say, lines that would make sense for them, are created. It’s also good exposure because many of the writers are also producers.
Albuquerque – We have a lot of actors who write in our group. It’s very empowering for actors to be able to write their own material as it puts them in the driver’s seat of their own careers. Their experience as actors gives them a good sense of what does and what doesn’t work in creating characters. Last Monday we had a professional cast read, Alaina Warren Zachary’s award winning screenplay, “These Broken Wings.” Alaina has had a long career as a professional actor and she’s just getting into screenwriting and I know that she’s finding a lot of support for that transition within our two groups.

These voices are from the first generation of women who truly had a choice. Their very candid conversation explores the surprising reasons why they made their decision and stimulates deep reflection for women (and men) of childbearing age and beyond.
