June 2011 Newsletter

Welcome to my first art newsletter!

Hi everyone - I am an artist living in Colorado who fell in love with watercolor over twenty years ago and I have been painting ever since. I also enjoy experimenting with collage, mixed media, watercolor batik and even some acrylics. I have been teaching classes and workshops for eleven years and enjoy encouraging students to find their own artistic expression.

I joined the blogging world several months ago and have had alot of fun posting my paintings, talking about techniques and sharing photos of my classes but everyone kept saying that I also needed a newsletter so here we are. My goal is to send one out each month highlighting what is new in my world, art, techniques, other artists, art books and a drawing for a free giveaway. Be sure to check out my blog to see past postings and more of my art and you can also subscribe to this newsletter if you haven't already.

 Have a great day!!

 Charleston Wedding

On the homefront our oldest daughter Laura married Eric Moore on April 8 in Charleston,SC on the grounds of a beautiful historic, southern home. A wonderful time for our family and we feel lucky that just as our nest is emptying out we are now adding a new son-in-law!

Memories in the Making

I help coordinate the Memories in the Making art program for the Alzheimer's Association here in Colorado Springs. This program provides a creative and expressive outlet to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and/or related dementias. While the disease affects individuals’ abilities to use language effectively, the need to communicate can continue through art and the MIM watercolor painting groups. The groups are held at various assisted living and care communities and are facilitated by a staff member and an art volunteer. This is a wonderful program and I always love seeing the happy smiles on their faces while they are painting and hearing their life stories.paiotning

Ask About Art
I am often asked what kind of brushes I like to use with my watercolor. My favorite brushes are the Loew Cornell Series 7000 that you see above. I do almost all of my painting with the 1 1/2 inch flat and a #14 round - they hold water, spring back, keep a nice point and don't cost a fortune because they are synthetic.

Sneak Peek - New Art

FIELD OF DAISIES is a new Watercolor Batik hot off the iron! I love this technique because I am always in for a creative surprise once all of the wax is ironed off.

Creative Journey

This is one of the first books I bought, years ago, when I first started painting in watercolor. My first teachers all seemed to start their paintings using wet paint on wet paper and Tony Couch takes the same approach, using saturated paint to create soft edges. His book covers the basic applications of watercolor, the Elements and Principles of Design and talks about how to utilize strong value patterns. I have found with this book and many others that I can go back to them time and time again and always gain something new. I think we are ready to understand and absorb artistic concepts at different times and places, depending on where we are in our own Creative Journey! Do you have a favorite art book?
