KIMBA Principle for Improved Performance

The KIMBA principle is an important tool for employee development. It can also be used to determine how to properly address a performance issue. In my coaching workshops, I review with managers and supervisors how all issues of development or performance can be traced to one of five components:

Knowledge - Does the individual know what to do and how to do it?
Inhibitors - Is there something internal or external, tangible or intangible, preventing the individual from performing the task the way it is expected?
Motivation - Does the individual have the desire to perform the task as expected? Does he/she understand the rewards and ramifications?
Boundaries - Are there proper guidelines, policies, procedures set? Are they too restricting?
Abilities -  Is the individual capable of performing the task? If not, can he/she be properly trained?
