HLAA National Convention Awards Go to 7 Washington HLAA Members
|

At the national HLAA convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 21-24, 2018, four awards were received by HLAA members (seven members in total) from Washington State. Diana Thompson, HLAA-WA Legislative Liaison, winner of the Marcia Dugan Advocacy Award, was mentioned in the last issue of E-News. This week we highlight the other three awards.

The Get-in-the-Hearing Loop Award was presented by Juliette Serkens, Au.D., to Joseph and Erlene Little, of Oak Harbor; and Jerry and Joanna Olstead, of Anacortes. Erlene Little is shown at left with the award.
These two couples, known as the “Anacortes Four,” have helped Northern Washington and Skagit County become among the most looped areas in our State. With their help, the Anacortes Library Meeting Room, Anacortes Community Theatre, the Anacortes Senior Center, the City of Anacortes Council Chambers and Skyline Clubhouse are looped. Nearby, Burlington Library, Oak Harbor Presbyterian Church, Westminster Church, and Island Hospital’s intake and information desks are looped.

An often overlooked part of hearing access is follow up, and these four advocates - Erlene in particular - are especially good about checking back with looped facilities, testing equipment, and thanking venues for captioned and looped performances. Smaller communities need loops just as much as big cities do, and the Anacortes Four have helped make this beautiful part of the state incredibly hearing-friendly—and incredibly well-looped.
Cheri Perazzoli, HLAA-WA Advocacy Director and national HLAA Board member, accepted the Community Service Award presented to Cynthia Stewart, of Olympia, who was not able to attend the convention. Cheri credited Cynthia with helping to get recent legislation passed, writing hundreds of emails, testifying to the State Legislature and developing relationships with legislators and advocates that will help with future legislation. As E-News editor, Cynthia also keeps our members informed on hearing loss issues and shows how they can testify and offer public comments for bills being considered by the State Legislature or city and county councils.
Diana Bender, Ph.D., presented the Spirit of HLAA Award to Bruce Rafford, of Deer Park for helping improve hearing access to a wide range of government, hospital and other facilities; and for helping all people with disabilities. Using his own resources, Bruce has traveled to every corner of Washington State to ensure that venues are doing all they can and should to provide hearing access and other disability accommodations. Bruce brings not only a deep knowledge of hearing loss and hearing access, but also of broader areas of disability advocacy. He has also worked with venues to improve parking, signage, materials, and accessible travel for people with disabilities. As far back as 1992, Bruce was working with Boeing Company to help them create a more hearing-friendly workplace.

The purpose of this calendar is to inform HLAA members and readers of hearing-accessible events and venues. This is not an exhaustive list; it reflects the events that we are aware of at the time of publication. - For updated information about Seattle Town Hall, see their web site here. Town Hall Seattle is currently undergoing a remodeling and events are scheduled at other venues throughout the city. We’re tracking down hearing access details, but no info is yet available. Please feel free to send a note of inquiry voicing your support for the loop at Town Hall and ask what kind of hearing accommodations have been put in place for the neighborhood presentations.
- All Seattle Repertory Theatre performances are looped. Captioned performances are offered at the first Thursday show of each production in the Bagley Wright and Leo K. Theatres. Get ticket information here.
- A Contemporary Theater (ACT) in Seattle now offers closed captions for Mainstage performances with the Figaro MobiTxt closed captioning system. Get more information here.
