Central Connecticut State leaders select Nevada Senior Assoc. AD for Intercollegiate Services & Special Asst. to the President Barrio to return to the Blue Devils & lead the department. Barrio: "As someone who grew up here, with memories of watching games at Detrick Gymnasium as a kid and who had my first internship in college athletics at Central, I do not take the responsibility of this position lightly. I am intent on giving our student-athletes and coaches the support they need to continue competing for championships and serving as a rallying point for the CCSU community, as well as for the city of New Britain." Barrio knows challenges lay ahead, adds, "What we’re going to do is work really hard on figuring out how to give these coaches and student-athletes the resources they need to keep winning championships. It’s absolutely achievable and something we can do." (link)
New Stephen F. Austin AD Ivey officially introduced, "I'm so honored, humbled and thrilled to be here today to be the leader of this athletics department. This is a tremendous opportunity and one that I appreciate because I recognize the gravity and responsibility that come along with it. I can promise you all that we are going to work hard every day to make sure we represent this institution in a first class manner." SFA Prez Pattillo: "In talking with the people at Austin Peay State University, especially the president. I've never received such a glowing recommendation. They did not want him to leave. Their president told me that if there was one person on our campus that I could retain, then Ryan Ivey would be the person I would keep on my staff. Naturally, we took that as a real compliment." More. (link, link); Here's video of the presser. (link)
St. John's goes with Collegiate Sports Associates to aid the process of hiring a new AD. VP for Administration, Secretary & General Counsel Oliva points to a search that he believes will include "a diverse pool of athletic administrators who share our Vincentian values and possess the attributes required to lead our athletic department." No timeline mentioned. (link)
Savannah State AD Steward is one of three finalists for the open AD chair at Alaska Fairbanks. Steward will make the trek for on-campus forums next Friday. Also involved are former Elizabeth City State (DII) AD Johnson & former Simon Fraser (DII) Senior Assoc. AD Richards. Johnson is first up on campus today. (link)
ESPN SEC expert Low suggests LSU AD Alleva may be under presser to have Tigers FB succeed in a major way this coming season. Low discussed the positioning of HC Orgeron with the namesake host of 'Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly,' indicated Alleva's "seat" might be hotter than Orgeron's. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd revisits the national injury report idea as AFCA boss Berry believes the idea needs to have sport-wide consistency. Berry also believes "there is enough impetus to make it happen [this year]." Dodd points out the challenges of FERPA & HIPPA. NCAA Chief Medical Officer Hainline, "There should be some sort of [college football injury] statement. I think right now everyone is trying to come to terms how to get those statements out and how to do it in a methodologically sound way. We can't just be silent." (link)
Long & interesting read from SB Nation's Godfrey on more behind the scenes details connected to the NCAA investigations into Ole Miss & Mississippi State FB. The word "lie" is used seven ties & Godfrey notes it as a theme of the situation: Believes he got lied to plenty of times as he reported on the situation, the schools think they were misled by many involved, student-athletes & those close to student-athletes also point to mistruths. One strongly-worded conclusion: "Mississippi is still football rich and money poor. Boosters still want to win and high school recruits still need their cash. This will keep happening. All of it. Even the NCAA said the culture stretches over decades." There's also the possibility of an indefinite disassociation for Ole Miss with Rebel Rags, which ironically may strengthen Rebel Rags' case against the NCAA. So many twists & turns. (link)
Hoops insider Goodman: "Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione made an appearance at the Peach Jam for the last two days. He told me that numerous members of the working groups also attended Peach Jam and some will go to other AAU/summer events." (link); CBSSports.com's Parrish goes hardline with mistakes he believes the NCAA will be making if this is the last Peach Jam coaches can attend. Thesis: "Eliminating the July Evaluation Period won't stop prospects from aligning with grassrooots teams sponsored by shoe companies like Nike, Adidas and Under Armour because those teams will still exist and these events will still take place. And it won't stop shoe companies from determining where prospects enroll in college because shoe companies will still invest hundreds of millions of dollars in athletic departments and still have an incentive to steer the best prospects to schools with which they have business relationships. And it won't stop agents and financial advisors from paying grassroots coaches, college coaches or anybody else connected to prospects in an attempt to garner influence over future decisions because agents and financial advisors will still be in the business of representing multimillionaires. Again, eliminating the normal July Evaluation Period won't fix anything. It'll only diminish opportunities. The number of prospects that will spend July playing in front of Division I coaches will be slashed drastically -- meaning some players who would otherwise be seen won't. And who benefits from that? Answer: Nobody." More. (link)
Louisville: Cards AD Tyra to the university's staff senate earlier in the week, "I know where we sit in the food chain and I want us to have a consistent message – not just athletics this or academics this. That’s what we’re trying to do and why I took the job, to provide leadership across campus and represent UofL, not just UofL athletics. Being in sync with what (President Bendapudi) wants is important for the success of our university." (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann reviews the lawsuit brought forth by five former U of L MBB student-athletes against the NCAA. McCann puts the claims in layman's terms & concludes, "Although the NCAA is armed with a number of defenses, it realizes that the players have hired a prominent attorney whose law firm has more than 420 attorneys. They likely have the financial wherewithal to take the long-view with this litigation. The players will be in no rush. If the NCAA plans to strike a fast settlement by offering modest financial terms to the players and their lawyers, they may encounter resistance." McCann also notes that the new suit now also fits "into a broader paradigm of current and former player litigation against the NCAA over the treatment of student-athletes," which could be another hit to amateurism framework. (link); University Prez Bendapudi says the FB stadium naming rights deal with Papa John's founder Schnatter will be reviewed in detail as another result of Schnatter's inappropriate language during a conference call. Finalists for the MBB Final Four in 2023, 2024 & 2025: Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Indianapolis, Los Angeles & San Antonio. Decisions expected to be announced next week. (link, link); A bit off the radar, probably since the deal is for Premier League rights in Southeast Asia & India, but SportTechie indicates Netflix was in the running for the portfolio that was eventually won by Facebook. So, was Netflix's interest a sign the streaming giant may be changing its tune on live sports or was it simply a play to quickly grow subscribers in markets where it currently has low penetration? Or, even further, are the media reports even true that Netflix was involved? (link)

Missouri AD Sterk provides additional context on FY18 that ended in the red, "I’m hopeful that we can balance it this coming year. That’s making sure that we stay within our means and invest wisely, but then grow our revenues at the same time." The new south end zone setup at Memorial Stadium is expected to enhance ticket revenues by $4M annually come 2020 & Sterk points to boosting cash in the scholarship fund as a way any Tiger fan can show their support weather they can make it to games or not. More Sterk, "It’s not like we are in the poor house. It’s just that the SEC has continued to accelerate as far as our competitors in the league. What we’ve looked at doing also is compared where we are with our peers budget-wise. We look at North Carolina, Virginia, Florida State, that group when we are looking at different things throughout the department." (link); Sun on the horizon in Columbia as FY18 ended with a record-setting university-wide fundraising haul of $147M as the school surpassed its $1B fundraising campaign goal by $26M. A note from new Kansas AD Long's presser, by way of KU Chancellor Girod, explaining the clause that would lengthen Long's contract if NCAA sanctions are handed down to MBB, WBB, FB or Volleyball, "I would add that that language was ours, in discussion with our consultant. And knowing, of course, that that story is out there, that that conversation continues, we wanted to demonstrate our confidence in where we were with this and our ability to work through this, and our belief that we are not at risk in this. And so that was really our doing, to put that language out there. That was not at his request. It was a way to reassure him that we are confident, as well, about where we are." (link)
Central Michigan AD Alford reviews his first year in Mt. Pleasant, notes what he's looking for in new HC hires: 1) Academic focus; 2) Success on the field; and, 3) Preparation for life. Alford says he doesn't normally discuss contract extensions or renegotiations during a season, prides himself on maintaining an open dialogue, "You're always going to know where I stand." Alford also points to an interest in studying how his best coaches got their program to where they are, "I talk to our young coaches a lot and tell them to go watch our veteran coaches." More. (link)
Outgoing Keene State (DII) AD & incoming Dartmouth Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Kelly visited with 1.Question's Brown at the NACDA Convention on "expectation management," problem-solving, prioritization & creative budget solutions. Kelly: "If the student experience is truly at the forefront of any tough decisions, I think you'll be fine as an AD. […] The biggest thing I'll take with me to Dartmouth is the ability to keep everything in perspective and never forget to have fun. […] You can have the most skills in the world, but if you don't have interpersonal skills, success will probably be hard to find especially in athletics." Fourteen-minute convo. (link)
Former Louisville MBB AC Fair, who has been connected to the MBB-FBI developments, is back on the sidelines with AAU squad Team Breakdown. Fair, via Twitter, "I have no pending NCAA infractions. I am not a subject or target of any investigation." WDRB's Crawford: "According to the NCAA, it certifies which summer events that college coaches can attend, but does not certify the non scholastic coaches themselves. All coaches, managers or operators at those must be licensed by USA Basketball." (link, link)

More from Baylor & former AD/current Liberty boss McCaw. From the Waco Tribune, "(This) Wednesday’s filing includes notes McCaw took at a board meeting in February 2016, several months into Pepper Hamilton’s investigation. He wrote that regent Mark McCollum was skeptical of extra money the board approved for the Baylor counseling center, a plan the university promoted after the meeting as part of an 'action plan to address sexual violence.'" McCaw also noted that Regent McCollum called the sexual assaults a "spiritual problem" that could be addressed through church services. Lots here, including McCaw's claims that then-university board chair Murff provided dishonest information to the public on multiple occasions & a plaintiff attorney points out that McCaw is under oath when recalling the facts. (link)
Oklahoma State is the latest to add public beer sales to FB games, which coincides with no longer allowing reentries to Boone Pickens Stadium. Pokes Deputy AD Weiberg: "We also firmly believe that our fans are a part of our team. We need them to be in the stadium at kickoff, want them to be in the stadium at kickoff and then we need and want them to be in the stadium at the start of the second half. When our team is taking the field at both parts of the game we want them to look up into the stands and see the Cowboy fans there cheering them on." (link - article, link - Interview with Weiberg)

'4 Ways to Create a Learning Culture on Your Team' comes from Columbia professor Chamorro-Premuzic & Deloitte leader Bersin for Harvard Business Review. 1) Reward continuous learning ("...rewarding curiosity is not just about praising and promoting those who display an effort to learn and develop; it’s also about creating a climate that nurtures critical thinking, where challenging authority and speaking up are encouraged, even if it means creating discord"); 2) Give meaningful & constructive feedback ("it is hard to improve on anything when you are unaware of your limitations, fully satisfied with your potential, or unjustifiably pleased with yourself"); 3) Lead by example; and, 4) Hire curious people ("If you hire people who are naturally curious, and maximize the fit between their interests and the role they are in, you will not have to worry so much about their willingness to learn or be on their case to unlock their curiosity.) (link)
