Winemaker's Note

It's always about the weather...

Shaw Vineyard fared well over the long cold winter of 2017-2018. We had minimal winter damage in our estate Vineyard. Although this April was one of the coldest on record, we made up for that during a warm, dry May. The vines appear to be in excellent shape as we move into the July and August heat.

We have continued to expand our vineyard holdings to additional sites, planting Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon at our Hector vineyard. This is an incredibly challenging site to cultivate with steep slopes and large stones, reminiscent of terrior in many European regions.

These new vines will bear fruit in four years alongside the previously planted Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. This is truly an exciting, unique Vineyard project pushing the envelope in sustainable Finger Lakes viticulture.

We are excited to announce the coming release of five new vintages of our trademark lees contact whites and barrel aged red wines:

2017 Sauvignon Blanc
LiBella Pinot Grigio NV blend
2013 Cabernet Franc
2011 Cabernet Sauvignon
2012 Pinot Noir

Our aged reds and whites continue to gain
a following among Finger Lakes wine enthusiasts. See you in the tasting room!

If we haven't seen you in a while, come on in and sample our "newest" cellar-aged wines.

Shaw Photos

A customer recently remarked that we had some of the more creative photos among Finger Lakes wineries. "Who is your photographer?" he asked.

Well... the winemaker. And his son.

One of the benefits of a small, handcrafted operation is a real sense of pride and workmanship. Steve Sr. is the year-round winemaker, vineyard manager, cellar manager, and proprietor. Steve Jr. is often around in the busy season and at harvest, supporting all of the above while serving as the marketing and wholesale manager.

The photos often begin as a documentation of creation, whether that be a new vine planting, or a pressing, or perhaps a cellar blending. Rarely are photos captured with special equipment: just a smartphone camera, a good eye, and a sense of accomplishment.

For instance, the main picture in this newsletter was captured just the other day by Steve Shaw Jr. after a long day of planting replacement vines!
