Why we do what we do
Dear parents/carers
I am writing this week from the beautiful surroundings of Osmington Bay where I have the pleasure of supporting 101 of our year 7 students over 4 days as they tackle a number of activities that will challenge their personal resilience as well as their team work skills.
This follows hot on the heels of yesterday’s wonderful sports day. It was great to see so many of you turning up to support your children.
This is why we do what we do and long may it continue.
Have a great weekend with your children
Regards
Russell Stevens

Hot Weather, Blazers and P.E. lessons Period 5
Due to the forecasted continual hot weather we are extending the period for which students do not have to bring or wear their blazer. If they have a P.E. lesson period 5 on any day next week they can go home in their kit rather than having to get changed. We will advise further when this hot spell breaks.
Non-uniform days - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday next week - £1.50 to take part.

John Hanson Country Dancing Festival 2018
John Hanson School field was awash with vibrant coloured costumes and smiling faces as the sun shone down at the Andover Town and District Primary Schools Country Dancing Festival.
The live band and caller, Nigel Barrell, led the children in 10 dances, including the Trafalgar Square, and Circassian Circle.
The festival has been an annual event in Andover for many years now. This year saw nearly 600 primary school children from across the district come together for a celebration of dance.
The children ranged from as young as 5 years up to 11 years old and came from 12 primary schools.
They were joined by parents, siblings and grandparents for a picnic before the event, and then soaked up the sunshine and ice cream refreshments whilst watching the spectacular performances by the youngsters.
The event was supported by 2 John Hanson Young Leaders who came back into school on inset day last Friday especially to help out. They were Ruby Hobson and Jaida Mai Pledge. Thank you so much for your help.

Thank You!!
A huge THANK YOU goes out to all the Year 5 students from 22 Primary schools, that have visited us for our Taster Days. We have had a great time showing you our school - we hope you have enjoyed it too.
If you were unable to come to our Taster days and would like to tour the school, please email Janet.reed@jhanson.hants.sch.uk to book an appointment.
Thank you again!
On Monday 10th July, after the students had been busily writing during six weeks of tutor time, John Hanson’s Big Write competition came to an end.
The students have simply had the title: ‘Community’ to write either a description/narrative, a scientific non-fiction essay or an autobiography.
With eighteen guest judges in for the day, to read through the forty pieces that were shortlisted for each year group, it was a tough job narrowing down to only twelve winners in each.
3 bronze winners.
3 silver winners who received a new book (donated by either the school Learning Resource Centre, or Amanda Parry of the LEARN alliance based at Thornden School).
3 gold winners who each received a £10 token (kindly donated by Waitrose, Gill Coward, our LRC manager, and Lloyds Banking Group).
Two extra special platinum winners also each received a Kindle HD which were sponsored by Test Valley Arts Foundation and Tracey Preston from the Gazette.
The presentation of the awards in the afternoon was a lovely celebration with many of our judges staying on to present students with their well-deserved prizes.
As always John Hanson were very grateful to our guest judges who included: Cat Randle from TVAF; Tracey Preston;; Chloe Buckingham from Aster Group’ ; Russell Smith from Bewiser; Sarah O’Rourke from Book in the Barn; Sam Abraham from Lloyds Banking Group ; Counsellor Sandra Hawke; Eileen Shears from Waitrose and Sabrina Mortimer from Test Valley Borough Council. Along with dedicated Year 11 students Seedorf, Jade and Jay and who returned for the day.
Magazines: if anyone regularly buys, or has a subscription to a magazine that may interest the students of John Hanson, we’d really appreciate your old (but in good condition) copies once you’ve finished with them in our English classroom libraries.
We’re thinking anything hobby based such as sewing, or sporty, as well as titles such as Focus, The Economist etc. Please deliver to main reception.
Many thanks,
Mrs Hall
