(Watch) Laying The Foundation For A Strategic Plan: UIC’s Klassy
Carson-Newman (DII) has named Tennessee Tech Assoc. AD for Development Pope as its new AD, succeeding a line of four consecutive Carson-Newman alumni who previously held the position. Pope, who has had stops at North Carolina, Western Kentucky and Towson, among others, said yesterday he was well aware of Carson-Newman's "storied athletics department," as well as its history of "sons of Carson-Newman" holding the post previously, but decided to send an introductory letter to Prez O'Brien anyway. "I had no preconceived notions." Prez O'Brien cited Pope's long track record of success in various places as a determining factor in his decision: "There are many things I could say about Matt, because I have heard them for more than a month now. From the AD at SMU, from the AD at Ole Miss, the associate AD at Alabama, the AD at Marshall and other places. His references from across the country have arrived in an impressive fashion." In his introductory presser, Pope noted that he isn't walking into any empty cupboard, saying: "In my line of work, it’s usually it’s a situation where someone isn’t getting the job done and a change is made. That’s not the case here. That’s what makes Carson-Newman so special. It fosters success. We want to be No. 1 in every sport we compete at. I’d love for every student athlete to walk out of here with a championship ring in one hand and a diploma in another. There’s always room to build." (link)
In discussing his vision for Fresno State, freshly minted AD Tunney calls the commitment to the student-athlete experience an "honor that we should not take lightly," adding: "The fact that we get to participate in this transformative time here for our students is truly a gift, and I want us to take it that way." Tunney also emphasizes the importance of cultivating an environment of integrity and accountability. "I think those are lessons that we need to teach and establish to all of our community -- not just our students, but also our coaches and staff." Finally, Tunney says service to the Valley will remain a hallmark of the program. "Everyone who sees this place as emblematic, as their institution, we should be serving them." (link)

We felt like WMT gave us more of a chance to stand out and break away from the crowd." (link); Outstanding read from media lead Ourand on how the WWE & UFC got new TV deals done with the likes of ESPN, Fox & NBCUniversal. Tons of behind the scenes details, like at one point Endeavor boss Emmanuel representing both UFC & WWE at the same time, a conflict of interest not even he could navigate. Notable ESPN leaders Pitaro, Magnus & Mayer are key to the story & the exit of former Worldwide Leader boss Skipper seems to have also played a role. Tremendous insight from Ourand. Revenue at Missouri failed to meet expenses in 2017 for the first time since joining the SEC, reporting a $4.5M deficit, and AD Sterk this week noted that it's "probably a couple years" before Mizzou returns to solvency, adding: "I'm hopeful that we can balance it this coming year." In 2012, the Big 12 withheld $12.4M from the university for its decision to move to the SEC, but five years later, the deficit is attributable to lagging ticket sales, increased spending on coaches salaries and construction of a new softball stadium. Mizzou was able to cover its deficit with reserves, and Sterk observed that "it's not like we are in the poor house. ... It’s just that the SEC has continued to accelerate as far as our competitors in the league. What we’ve looked at doing also is compared where we are with our peers budget-wise. We look at North Carolina, Virginia, Florida State, that group when we are looking at different things throughout the department." Excitement surrounding MBB last season, spurred by the addition of top recruit Porter Jr., led to a $2.1M increase in ticket sales, and despite Porter's departure, Sterk doesn't anticipate a drop-off in enthusiasm. "I think it could certainly match last year. Overall, competitively, I think we have an opportunity to be even better." (link)
Despite improving its Learfield Directors' Cup standing from 32 to 11 this year, Duke AD White sees the year as somewhat of a missed opportunity to place even higher, saying seven teams were "knocking on the door" to a national title. "We were close. Could have been better, quite frankly. But we aspire to be a single-digit Director’s Cup program. ... That’s kind of what the expectation is, and the expectation is put on all of us by ourselves, and that’s what we’re trying to do here." While several programs may be facing more of a rebuild this year, White still thinks the Blue Devils have a "chance to be pretty good." Meanwhile, with several facilities projects either completed or winding down, White says improvements to the MBB and WBB locker rooms at Cameron Indoor Stadium could be in the works in the "not-too-distant future" along with some "pretty modest projects" for tennis and field hockey "in terms of dollar value." He adds: "We really want to make a hard run at endowment, so our next campaign -- and even before we ramp up to campaign, we really want to turn our attention to growing our endowment pretty dramatically. We need long-term stability." (link)
Northern Illinois boss Frazier stopped to chat with 1.Question's @TaiMBrown at the NACDA Convention in D.C. The pair covered athletics as a vehicle for social change. Frazier: "As a leader, we have to manage issues or they will manage themselves. If not, who knows what the outcome will be. […] It's the toughest job I've ever had and it's the best job I've ever had. […] The athletics industry is going to have to be more intentional about trying to move the agenda for social change. But we have to be prepared because intentionality will probably ruffle some feathers." More in the thirteen-minute listen. (link)
Former Ohio State wrestling student-athlete Alf, a staunch defender of Ohio Congressman Jordan, this week characterized "locker room talk" about late team physician Strauss's alleged misconduct as more of a joke than serious allegations; however, he qualified his assertion, saying: "Did he make a mistake and not put it together? That could be the situation here. … Things are out and I want to make sure the true story is being told, whether that is helpful to the other athletes or defending Jimmy or not. Maybe I’m not helping Jimmy out, but I’m not going to lie." Alf is joined by several other former student-athletes whose message, according to Alf, is: "Jim, why don’t you just tell that you heard about this as it was going along? We know you were young and you didn’t put it together." (link); Meanwhile, PR firm Shirley & Banister Public Affairs has circulated a letter signed by six former OSU wrestling coaches supporting Jordan. The letter reads, in part: "What has been said about Jim Jordan is absolutely wrong. We all worked on the wrestling coaching staff during Jim's tenure at The Ohio State University. None of us saw or heard of abuse of OSU wrestlers." (link)
Women's Soccer continues to see a notable number of head injuries according to a new study & even has a greater share of head injuries as a percent of overall injuries than FB. Key excerpt: "To our knowledge, this is the first study to report that concussions now account for a higher proportion of injuries in girls soccer than boys football. The concussion rate for girls soccer is also increasing rapidly, and is now nearly tied with boys football and 3-fold higher than boys soccer." There's also a breakdown of 11 other sports. (link - article, link - full study outline)
So, the New York Times' account of the initial meeting between Warner Media brass & the HBO unit acquired by AT&T may not have gone exactly as reported. Recode's Kafka transcribes a good portion of the town hall forum & here's certainly the part not reported by NYT that's of interest to us, from Warner Media's Stankey, "Look, live sports is probably still going to have a role in people’s consumption habits moving forward. And I don’t know that there’s going to be yet one standalone platform for live sports distribution and one standalone platform for on-demand premium scripted content. I think over time those start to come together, and there’s only going to be a few platforms distributing them." So, might HBO invest in more live sports rights? (link); In the same category, a good read from nScreenMedia on the evolution of OTTs & vMVPDs (virtual Multichannel Video Programming Distributors), "Content fees are the reason pay TV has become so expensive and vMVPDs suffer the same problem. There is no solution to the escalating cost of TV of the big bundle. vMVPDs can only help to cut the costs of pay TV in the short-term and smooth the transition to what comes next." (link)

Garth Brooks has performed all over the world, but he hasn't performed in Notre Dame Stadium. Matter of fact, no one has, until now. Garth will be the first on a yet-to-be-determined date that looks like it'll be sometime in late August. Fighting Irish AD Swarbrick points to the facility's turf surface as being key to host other events now, "It helps a lot. Hockey is the one that sort of jumps to mind. There aren’t a ton of stadium acts anymore in music, but we’ll be able to use it more and, of course, that’s the entire focus of the (Campus) Crossroads project." (link)

Lexington Herald-Leader contributor Huang has penned an op-ed examining the hostility with which some Kentucky fans still regard AD Barnhart despite unprecedented success across the board. In addition to improved on-field performance, Huang points out that Barnhart has instilled a culture of "servant leadership personified by all his coaching hires. Huang adds: "Barnhart, newly appointed chair of SEC Athletics Directors, is genuinely dialed into the guiding principles of character, integrity, education, stewardship and competitiveness. ... As long as Barnhart is around, BBN won’t ever have to worry about being disgraced both on the field or in the classroom." Wildcat student-athletes have also steadily increased academic performance, with graduation rates breaking new records each year, all while remaining scandal-free. "For that reason alone, his million-dollar salary is worth every penny." (link); With the start of fall camp looming, UK FB season ticket sales are down 10% from last year. Despite returning the vast majority of a core that has gone to bowl games in consecutive years, UK has sold just 28,800 season tickets for the 2018 season, down from 32K in 2017. UK projects to sell roughly 5K tickets to students when packages become available later this month. Kroger Field saw an average attendance of 56,468 last season. (link)
A California arbitrator has determined former USC FB HC Sarkisian has no grounds to sue the university on his claims of discrimination on the basis of disability and breach of contract upon his exit from Troy. Sark says he won't fight the situation further, "I am disappointed in the decision, but we will respect it and move on. Much gratitude to everyone who has shown their support and stood by me. The last two years have been trying, but I am in now a great place, healthy, happy and loving my job with the Falcons and have the support of my family and friends and that’s where my focus is and will remain." Trojans AD Swann: "We are pleased that the arbitration has reached its rightful conclusion and we wish Steve Sarkisian well." (link)
More from North Texas as the Mean Green's Big 3 HCs of FB's Littrell, MBB's McCasland & WBB's Mitchell have the UNT brand well-positioned for continued success. The Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito writes on the importance of up & coming HC talent for mid-majors, "The proven path to success for schools outside of those leagues [Power 5 + high-major hoops leagues] is to find coaches who have the ability to break through on the national stage. It’s just as critical to support them, and most importantly, retain them." Littrell points to synergy between himself, UNT AD Baker & university Prez Smatresk, which he says is a key for success. Baker: "You have to decide very strategically, this is where we are going to invest. If you have a hot young coach, you invest in him, but there comes a point where the investment to keep him becomes more than you can bear and still do the things you need to do." More. (link)
The Daily Press' Teel writes on the NCAA's Champion Forum that went down in Maryland at the same time as the NACDA Convention. Former Virginia executive leader & current consultant Oliver on preparing top minority FB coordinators to take over programs, "You can’t shame (schools) into hiring (certain coaches). You can’t tell them what they need to be doing. But what we can do is make sure (forum participants are) ready and make sure they get the exposure. …At the end of the day, I don’t think people are excluding (minorities). They’re hiring people they’re comfortable with. We need to make them comfortable with these guys." A Who's Who of search firms were involved, including Parker, Eastman-Beaudine, Witt/Kieffer & Carr Associates. The fictional institution the elite cohort of coordinators were interviewing for was a private 'Power 5' school in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Given his beat, Teel focuses on Clemson co-OC Elliott & Navy OC Jasper. (link)
Mark another one down for Tailgate Guys as the 49ers of Charlotte are the latest department to add premium tailgate opportunities. Tailgate Guys CEO Duffey: "I met [Charlotte AD & former Florida executive staffer] Mike Hill seven years ago in his office at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. We learned a ton from Mike and the team on what it means to be a true partner and that's exactly what we'll be for his new team in Charlotte. We are excited for Mike and his plans at Charlotte and we look forward to locking arms with the Niner Nation to bolster their game day culture." (link)

KUSports.com's Tait commends new Kansas boss Long on his social media efforts thus far, specifically the quick change of his Twitter handle from @JeffLongRNR to @JeffLongKU and how, just four days since his hiring announcement, Long has already fired off several KU-related tweets. "In doing so, he has proven that he has both feet firmly planted in the modern world, where social media and the Internet are a big part of everyday reality — like it or not — and can be viewed and used as tools to promote yourself and your vision as much as they are a place for people to spit out their opinions and waste a bunch of time. That’s not to say Long is ever going to hop on Twitter to announce a personnel move or discuss the KU athletic department’s budget. But having a consistent presence and letting people in will go a long way toward bringing a new culture to Kansas Athletics." (link)
Upgrades coming to Boone Pickens Stadium at Oklahoma State before first kick this Fall include a new food court, a handful of "cool zones" to keep fans from overheating & opening tailgate lots at 8a no matter what time the game starts. Pokes AD Holder: "The fan experience is important to us. We have spent a lot of time evaluating our work in this area and we will continue to do so." (link); The Athletic's Fortuna writes on the new arena being built for the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, "But all of the above bells and whistles (and closers) certainly do not hurt, which is why you are seeing more and more teams get into the arms race and put on the hard sell — be it the [Minnesota] Gophers in college or the Bucks in the NBA — on what their product can do for you. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the Bucks, and many other pro teams, are pulling a page from the college football playbook here when it comes to trying to attract the best players, and more fans, to their organizations." (link)
Count North Dakota State as one FCS program currently using all eight of its allowable weekly hours with student-athletes for weight training & running drills & none for film study. NDSU Director of Athletic Performance Kramer: "We don't do any film with our kids. If I'm down to six hours, then I'm struggling to get stuff in. We can fully utilize those eight hours." (link); Fox Sports reviews scheduling challenges for FCS programs who chose to play a non-FCS foe & still angle to get in the Playoffs. McNeese State's 2017 season pointed to as an example when the Cowboys finished 9-2, with one win over a non-FCS, and didn't make the post-season. This years high-profile crop who face the same situation include Eastern Washington, Idaho, Sacramento State, Illinois State, Samford & Western Carolina. (link)
LAX at Florida State? Given comments over the past few months by Prez Thrasher & a meeting in New York City between Noles AD Wilcox & some well-heeled alums who would like to see the addition in Tallahassee, it seems like LAX may be in the cards. There's a bunch of email correspondence in the article between Wilcox & others. At one point back in 2015 Wilcox noted, "At this time, we are tentatively discussing plans to add the sport of women’s lacrosse in the next 4-5 years (approximate start-up & year 1 cost: $6.35 million; approximate recurring annual cost: $1.5 million)." (link)
"An affiliate of Winston-Salem’s IMG College is participating for the fourth time in a federal lawsuit involving allegations of sales of counterfeit products by online groups based in ChinaIMG College Licensing LLC, based in Atlanta, is joined in the complaint again by affiliate of Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and the University of Nebraska’s board of regents. The defendants are listed as 'the partnerships and unincorporated associations.' The complaint was filed Monday in the Northern District of Illinois." Counts listed in the complaint include trademark infringement, counterfeiting, false designation of origin and violation of Illinois uniform deceptive trade practice act with sales running into the "hundreds of millions of dollars annually" range. Nebraska has 13 trademarks listed, while the NBA and IMG College Licensing have eight each, the NHL has nine and MLB has five. (link)
Also Noticed: Little Rock raised $4.3M this past year, more than doubling the previous department high of $2M from a year before. Third straight year of 7-figure haul. (link); Alabama inks a 10-year deal with Coca-Cola, but this deal is independent from the deal Coke has with the athletic department, which was extended this year. (link); The ACC and Big Ten will compete in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge for Swimming & Diving this November at Purdue in a short-course yards dual meet. (link); Georgia Tech's equipment staff has been busy organizing the $3M worth of new Adidas gear, receiving up to 200 boxes per week. Having just completed his 16th season at the helm of Providence athletics, Friars AD Driscoll says a change in culture preceded an increase in expectations, ultimately leading to student-athlete success and improved facilities around campus. "I thought if we could paint a vision about graduating student-athletes and competing for championships and not just show up, people would get excited. If we are able to do this, the possibility becomes less imaginary and more real." That vision began with Driscoll, who was determined not to let the past dictate the Friars' future. "If you didn’t allow past experiences or limitations to create a vision … a lot of people think you’re crazy when you talk like that, but that’s the only way to get people to think big enough. ... The success we had, given the limitations, were pretty cool. When we started out, it was like a bad high school. Now I think we have one of nicest set of facilities as anybody in Division I." It's not enough to be successful, however, if you're not going about it honestly, according to Driscoll, who asserts: "I want people to look at Providence College as doing it the right way, We did it with integrity and we were honest and played by the rules. I’m really proud we’ve been able to deliver on what we promised to do." (link)
