Dear Friends,

Welcome to July's Summer Edition of Bly's Bounty.

Continuing the celebrations of Thomas Chippendale's work and influence we are dedicating this Bounty to a spectacular pair of settees that bear his hallmarks and have a most interesting provenance.

Please do remember that our sourcing service remains at your disposal should that special piece be proving elusive.

We look forward to seeing you in our Chelsea showroom
next time you are in the area.

The Stapleford Park Settees

An important pair of 18th century carved giltwood settees attributable to Thomas Chippendale.

Of attractive small size they show several features characteristic of Thomas Chippendale's workshop as illustrated in the images below.

Formerly at Stapleford Park, Leicestershire, England, thence to Ufford Old Rectory, the home of Margaret, Lady Gretton.

A photograph taken in 1907 showing the settees in situ at Stapleford Park, the Gretton family seat, is available upon request.

The framed oval and curved back, padded open arms and serpentine seat with fluted frieze supported by six tapering legs.

The fluting extends to the sides of the frieze and side back legs, the back frieze and centre back leg are plain.

The curvilinear arm supports similar to those on Chippendale's sofas supplied to Brocket Hall.

The cresting on the top rail of rosette and swag also similar to that seen on the Brocket Hall sofas.

The exposed vertical rail to the backs is characteristic of Chippendale's work.

The clamp cuts under the seat rail and batten-carrying holes are hallmarks of Chippendale seat furniture.

These are truly remarkable and historically important settees and we hope you agree worthy of an entire Bounty. A full account of their purchase and subsequent restoration are available upon request.
