West End SPEAKS to West End ACTS

When the West End SPEAKS community plan was created back in May of 2016, it was concluded that seven themes would be the focus areas of West End residents and stakeholders. Neighborhood housing and business goals were and still are at the top of the list.
To spark West End business engagement, a West End Business Festival was held on Saturday, June 30th. It was a free, family friendly event to attract attention to neighborhood businesses.

If you are a West End business owner and would like to be involved as a member of the forming West End Business Alliance, please contact Tia Brown at tia.brown@7hillsnh.com or 513-407-5362. Business Team meetings are held every 2nd Monday at Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses @ 5:30p.

This beautiful mural was dedicated on June 25th! We now have our very first ArtWorks mural in the West End. Take a stroll down Findlay St. and check it out!
Thank you to all the community partners who made this mural possible. ArtWorks, LISC, City of Cincinnati, Susan O'Malley Foundation and Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses and many others!

As part of the deal to put a stadium in the West End, FCC signed a community benefits agreement with the community to pump dollars into the neighborhood over the course of 30 years. “I have on sunglasses to keep from showing you the tears I have in my eyes man,” said Nick Johnson. “This has been a long time coming. Jeff kept his promise and I’m lost for words actually. “ Johnson is the CEO and a coach with the Lil’ Senators youth football organization in the West End. On Wednesday June 27th, FC Cincinnati delivered brand new helmets and practice jerseys to the team.

New pads are also on the way. A direct financial cost of the donation wasn’t revealed, but it was said that the bill for all the new equipment hit five digits. Johnson says the current equipment is 15 years old. “We have equipment where the manufacturers are no longer in business, so there is no warranty. We got a lot of that. Just waiting for God to bless us and he sent FC our way,” said Johnson.

Other CBA benefits from FCC include:
- WECC is a signer to the agreement
- $100,000 for a housing study
- $50,000 for a "communications consultant"
- "support" the Port's efforts to invest in equitable housing development in the West End
- help raise funds for housing support in the neighborhood

- at least $100,000 each year for Community Programs
- at least $100,000 each year for the West End Youth Soccer Program
- host two jobs fairs in the West End
- provide West End residents with "priority for employment opportunities"
- full-time employees at least $15 per hour
- provide community organizations with "priority for volunteer opportunities"

With development comes questions, concerns and the opportunity for you to be more active with the events happening in your neighborhood.

It was so rewarding to attend the Camp Joy 81st Anniversary celebration on July 9th . New and old campers were in attendance to commemorate the historical significance of Camp Joy and its roots in the West End at Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses. One of the very first campers from 1937 was there to share in the event, 91 year old Frank Wetenkamp. Also June and Larry Turner, married for over 58 years who met at Camp Joy while one was a camp counselor and the other a staff member at Seven Hills Neighborhood House.

The West End is rich with history and stories. Share your West End story so we all can learn and grow closer as a community. If you know someone who should be featured as a "Difference Maker", please let us know! Contact Tia Brown at tia.brown@7hillsnh.com or call 513-407-5362.
The Cincinnati Neighborhood games took place the last week in July with the finale on Saturday, July 28th. Last year the West End  was in 13th place. But this year for the overall metal count, the West End tied for 2nd place with Westwood with a total of 15 metals!! In 1st place this year was Clifton.  The next Games are scheduled for 2020. Make sure you are a part of the fun, because we plan to win! GO WEST END!

Fun fact: Did you know if you have an EBT card, the Cincinnati Children’s Museum has a program called MUSEUMS FOR ALL which allows you entrance into the museum for only $2 each (bring up to 10 other guests)
