Monica DiGiovanni | My Wild Beat
Dear friends,

High summer is by far one of my favorite times of year. Some prefer the snowy months but there is nothing that brings me back into myself like sounds, sights and smells of summer. Swimming holes, gardens, hiking trails and summer festivals top it off with plenty of options to get us out into the landscape. I've been busy exploring the natural world myself as well as spending lots of time in the garden after so many years of puttering with flowers around the yard. (Check out a simple recipe for sautéed endive below!) The richness and healing energy of the outdoors has been a priority over time spent in front of the computer...and so here is yet another sporadically-timed newsletter.

I've also been teaching quite a bit this summer and enjoying every minute of it. I offer two weekly drop-in classes at Embodied as well as a few series classes offered through Montpelier Senior Activity Center.

Dear to my heart are the workshops I've created as part of the Dance with Fire series. We are now half way through the series with still four more workshops to choose from if you would like to join. Notable is that the workshop Overcoming Fear and Adversity was postponed from July 2 to July 16 because of the heat. There is still time to register for next Monday's class!

Full series description
Four more transformative workshops to choose from this summer!
Fear of the unknown or unfamiliar can be paralyzing, causing poor decision-making or lack of action. Manifesting fear in the body can instigate illnesses of many kinds related to stress, depression and anxiety. Learn how to embrace challenge and change while enjoying the liberation of letting go of old habits, experiences and belief systems. This three-hour workshop is designed to help you fearlessly face your inner demons. Just like turning on a light in the dark, by turning towards adversity, instead of away from it, we can see more clearly and are able to relax with what is. A fiery asana practice with Goddess Pose (utkata konasana) will build spirit and strength in the body while tonglen, or “taking and receiving” meditation teaches us to “use poison as medicine” by transforming suffering into its opposite. You will gain a better understanding of the vagus nerve and how it relates to your autonomic nervous system (ANS) and stress. Step out of survival mode by facing your fears and moving through creative blocks with ease and grace. Allow your inner voice to sing with presence and passion. Join the Facebook event.
Creativity is the act of making connections, it’s what makes us, us. Learn some of the science behind how yogic practices and ancient techniques heal us mentally, physically and emotionally. Ground creative practice in a way that is healthy and sustainable. This workshop offers an asana series exploring bi-lateral coordination perfect for organizing and subduing busy, overwhelmed minds. Understand the somewhat outdated principles of “left and right brain” concept and how mental process is a series of ever-changing connections. We will look at artwork created in more “executive function mode” versus that which exhibits intuitive, improvisational techniques. We will also have fun with “Blackout Poems”. Class will close with an opportunity to write a “Let Go Manifesto” in order to confidently clarify a compassionate belief system designed to help you to hear, speak and stand proudly with your creative voice. Join the Facebook event.
Explore the differences between “brain” and “mind”, requiring a particular kind of focus developed by skillful practice. Tap into source intelligence, an exploration of unconscious understanding, to discover the answers within. The Japanese Zen practices of zazen or “seated meditation” and kōan meditation, the contemplation of paradoxical meaning will support you on this journey. What appears might surprise you. In the second half of class, experience the creative freedom and liberation of flow in the whole of your being through movement meditation. Blindfolded (or not) movement meditation brings the unfolding of discursive thoughts and ingrained physical behaviors into a state of seamless connection. Join the Facebook event.
You are enough! And you have everything you need right now. We are constantly receiving messages that we need more…more money, more happiness, more material possessions, etc. But what is it that you really need to thrive? Go beyond a scarcity mind-set. Step fully into a personal (r)evolution with confidence and a deep commitment to create your world in way that serves you best. Participants will enjoy a joyful asana series for strength, integrity and balance. The integration of yogic locks or bandhas will deepen connection to life through practice, fully integrating “self and other”, ending with an extended Corpse Pose (savasana). Guided meditation focused on reclaiming what is lost offers an opportunity for completion, calling home a loving, liberated sense of wholeness. Participants will harmonize new-found knowledge with a written “Vow to Action” embodying an achievable path to a nourishing, empowered vision. Join the Facebook event.

Yoga for Balance
Wednesdays, 10:30-11:15 pm

Cultivate stability and confidence through greater awareness to posture, including the way we use our left and right side body. This class will include many different ways to find balance through core engagement plus strengthening the proper muscles as we shift weight to different areas in our body. Geared for beginner and intermediate students of yoga, there will be a lot of standing postures.

Yoga for Focus and Fitness
Wednesdays, 1:30-2:45 pm

Do you enjoy physical activities such as running, crosscountry skiing, dancing, biking, hiking and rollerblading? This intermediate class is suitable for anyone with an active life.

Gentle/Moderate Yoga
Fridays, 2:35-3:45 pm

Stretch, decompress and clear mental space with this Friday afternoon class designed to ease you into the weekend. Students are guided to find harmony between breath and movement and to be present moment to moment.
Weekly Drop-in Classes

Hosted by Embodied
Drop-in cost: $16 / $12

Core and Upper Body Yoga Fusion
Thursdays, 2:00-3:00 pm

Bodies are a complex series of relationships that can sometimes loose the connections necessary to function as an integrated system. Rebalancing the relationship between the pelvic and shoulder girdles will stabilize the spinal column and protect the spinal cord. This whole body stabilization will harmonize the diaphragm and pelvic floor to support healthy breathing patterns including pranayama. Experience safe, nourishing movement while creating the strength you need to support a deeply satisfying asana practice.

Vitality Yoga
Fridays, 12:00-1:00 pm

We are in the body we are born with for the long haul, including all the accumulated experiences along the way. The beginning of class will peacefully ease in to the place where you are right now, establishing a whole-body union. Followed by gently intensifying, gliding moments, practice will deepen, building strength and flexibility with a clear mind. Pose variations will be given for those recovering from injury or on the newer edge of intermediate asana exploration. Open the channels of free-flowing energy for a renewed sense of your vital Self on the path of life.

Community Yoga

Friday, July 20
5:00 -  6:00 pm
at Embodied

Classes are moderate level and donation based, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the teacher. All are welcome! End your work week with a joyful yoga practice before you head out for dinner or a movie!
Other Fun Stuff for Summer
Kitty cat cool down...
With the heat waves baring down on us I'm thinking so much of our furry pals as they don't have the same abilities to regulate overheating as we do. Not to mention that they are totally dependent on us to make sure they stay safe and hydrated. Years ago a friend offered a fun, refreshing way to beat the heat and I've successfully been able to do this for my cats as well. It's simple!

Take a damp towel or wash cloth and stick it in the freezer. Take it out after it freezes and let it thaw just enough to become pliable.
Place it on your furry pal, or yourself! My cats were so relieved from the cool down.

You can also use slightly thawed ice packs placed over fabric. (Don't ever put ice packs directly on a body.) Another friend placed ice packs on the floor then placed a towel down for her dog to lie down on. Besides plunging into cold water or scrambling for air conditioning, this is the best way I've found to manage summer overheating.
Simple sauté recipe for delicious summer greens...
This delicious summer sauté takes no time at all and answers the question of how to manage an overabundance of summer greens. It cooks down a lot, similar to spinach, so preparing a few heads at a time will feed the family and let none go to waste. Yummy! Find the recipe on my blog.
