July Landscape Watering
It's monsoon season! If it rains 0.35 inches or more, turn that timer off and skip an irrigation cycle! Otherwise, July means irrigating lawns once every 3 days. Plants on drip irrigation can be irrigated once every 4-12 days, depending on your plant type. There are more recommendations on how often to irrigate other plant types. To determine how long, or how many minutes or hours, you should water for, visit this online resource.
In our clay soils, plants like a deep soak followed by several days to dry out. This builds strong roots and healthy plants. To get the right amount of water to your plants, enforce the 1-2-3 rule: water groundcovers 1 foot deep, shrubs 2 feet deep, and trees 3 feet deep. Use a long screw driver to push into the soil after an irrigation event to ensure how deeply water infiltrated the soil. When you can't sink the screwdriver in any more, that is the depth the water reached.
