Welcome to the first Blackwattle Alpaca Yarn and Fibre Newsletter!

About us and our alpacas!

Blackwattle Yarn and Fibre is the creation of us, Angela and Matthew Smith, which we run from our farm ‘One Tree Hill’, located in Murrumbateman, NSW. Our farm and yarn businesses are named after two trees on our farm – the stunningly beautiful and old heather tree on the top of our farms one and only hill and the sombre, but truly gorgeous, black wattle trees that grow across our property.

We started our alpaca fibre love affair following the purchase of two alpacas, when we moved to the farm in 2008. The alpaca numbers grew quickly and we now run a herd of about 70 alpacas, mainly breeding females. We focus our alpaca breeding program on developing and producing alpacas that meet the industry standards, whilst focusing on the commercial needs of the fibre these beautiful animals grow.

Our Farm Shop

On 12th May 2018 we proudly opened our Blackwattle Farm Shop.

A farm shop was only a dream until we plucked up enough courage to make it happen. The result is a stunning shop bulging with lots of alpaca yarn and fibre – showcasing our range of hand dyed and natural alpaca yarn and fibre. The shop is located within our farm shed, where Angela works – hand dyeing the yarn and fibre. Visit the shop and see Angela in action!

When planning your visit also leave enough time to visit our alpacas and even hand feed a few of the delightful greedy ones.

The Farm Shop is open to visitors by appointment and during the below opening times and dates. Opening times will be updated each month and will vary from month to month.

It is the middle of winter and in most locations in Australia the temperatures have now dropped - making it the right time to crochet, knit, weave, spin or felt some lovely Australian grown alpaca, to help you all stay warm and toasty this winter!

We are pleased to announce that we will soon be offering Fibre and Feast Workshops!! We will be offering a wide range of workshops on our farm from crochet, knitting, felting, dyeing and fleece appreciation classes with lots of yummy local food, including alpaca, and of course some glorious local wine. Do you know where your yarn comes from?

We do! The fibre that goes into our yarn comes from two locations - right here on our own farm in Murrumbateman and from other alpaca farms across NSW ! We then use three mills - two in NSW and one NZ.
