Kansas: "This guy will suffer no fools. He's disciplined. He holds people accountable. He can handle the heat." That's what KU AD search committee head Jennings thought after meeting new Jayhawks AD Long for the first time, which was in the Washington D.C. area during the NACDA Convention a couple of weeks ago. More Jennings: "The chancellor knew that when we started this, he was really going to have to cinch the belt up and play for real. If you want to get done what you want, which is to elevate the profile of this entire university — athletics as well — to move it up to the next level, you've got to play hardball." As for some of Long's intro remarks, "I have a vision for KU Athletics. My vision starts with the student-athletes, and it starts with the three C's, and those three C's for me are: Compete, compete and compete. […] We will be guided by the following principles: we will have an unwavering commitment to the student-athletes' health, safety and well-being, that's our highest priority. We also have an unwavering commitment to doing things in the best interest of our student-athletes. We will insist on honesty and integrity throughout our program, and we will work with our coaches to remove the obstacles to success. We will generate and strive to generate the financial resources we need to run this program, to compete in the Big 12 (Conference) and compete nationally. We will be a program that values that financial support from our fans and thus, we will manage our resources wisely. We will encourage our supporters to join us by telling the incredible stories that each and every one of our student-athletes has to tell." Long also says it's time to "break the cycle" of FB apathy, plus lots more. (link, link); Here's video of Long's presser. (link); KU MBB HC Self doesn't believe it's really news that the Jayhawks have been the recipient of federal subpoena, says embattled student-athlete De Sousa is eligible for now, "The bottom line is that is something that has to play out. As much as I would like to say he's positively this or that, I can't do that. There has been no indication yet, that we would have a serious problem with that. That doesn't mean something couldn't come up that we're not aware of." (link)
CollegeAD indicates the Austin Peay AD search is down to three: Boston College Senior Assoc. AD for Business & Administration Blossom, Duke Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs Harrison & Memphis Senior Assoc. AD for Development Walker. All three will be on-campus for the next round of interviews. CSA has the search. (link)
The Citadel is on target to meet its goal of hiring a new AD by September 1, according to Parker Executive Search, who has 67 candidates on file that have submitted either letters of interest or some other form of application. Additionally, 50 or so more candidates are in "some form of consideration" while 30 candidates contacted by Parker declined to be considered. Parker has also indicated that the current list includes "sitting athletic directors, senior associates, officials from development and compliance, internal and external." Parker: "We are recruiting a deep and diverse pool of candidates, paying close attention to ethnic and gender diversity." The Citadel's search committee will meet on August 1 with the goal of narrowing the list to 8-12, and in the meantime Parker says the search is going well compared to some of its past searches, telling the committee: "We've done a number of searches in your league (the Southern Conference) and in FCS and in your state, including College of Charleston. To have 67 candidates at this point is a high number. I figured we'd have 60 to 80 in the end, and it looks like we will be north of that number." (link)
In his annual report to the board of regents this week, Minnesota AD Coyle announced a budget of $121M for the upcoming fiscal year before noting the department has raised $108M for the Athletes Village complex. Additionally, Coyle told regents the university set a record with 351 student-athletes earning academic all-B1G honors while also achieving a graduation success rate of 92%, the highest of any public school in the conference. Regent Chair McMillan called Coyle's report "very inspiring" while Regent Johnson told Coyle: "You and your team have done absolutely stellar work on behalf of the University of Minnesota. All the statistics, all the trend lines are moving in an extremely positive position." Coyle noted that "we want to make sure we set the tone from the top, that doing it right at Minnesota matters. It's nice when you have good news to tell."  (link)
North Carolina AD Cunningham says his FB program is in good shape & that considerable amount of time & money has been spent trying to identify why the squad suffered so many injuries last year & what can be done to combat the situation. Cunningham: "We looked at everything. Whether it happened at practice. Whether it happened in a game. Whether it happened on grass, on turf. How fatigued somebody was. What their lifting habits were. What their eating habits were, sleep habits. We looked at all that stuff. What their GPS readings were --- how hard they were exerting themselves in a practice and games. All those factor into fatigue and whether or not you have been previously injured to determine how likely is it you will be injured in the future." Cunningham also says this is the first year HC Fedora isn't recruiting "under some false pretense, or people negatively recruiting against us." (link)
Deadspin's Martin digs in with Conference USA Commish MacLeod, Sun Belt boss Benson & MBB analyst-turned scheduling renovator Adams on how they're attempting to upend some of the challenges faced by mid-majors & access to the NCAA Tournament. Adams: "The top six spending conferences in the country have created their own cartel. It’s legal, but it’s a cartel. So I figured, if I can only control my conference schedule, how might I manipulate that schedule in order to gain an unfair advantage just like what I see at the top level of NCAA basketball?" MacLeod points to her time on the MBB Committee & the main questions that commonly came up, "How many Quadrant I wins did somebody have?" Benson: "One of the other things that our coaches indicated was that they didn’t want to be the quote, ‘guinea pigs.’ They said, ‘Let Conference USA do it and we can wait and see if it works or not.’ And yet, I think our presidents recognized the immediate value of it." Lots more Adams, including, "If I can help you go from a 14-seed to an 11-seed, you have 2.5 times greater chance to win an NCAA tournament game. Does that help your career?" (link)
Attorneys representing 10 alleged victims of sexual assault have subpoenaed more than 60 people as part of a civil suit filed against Baylor. The subpoenaed parties have all been affiliated with the school at some point, including former presidents Starr and Sloan, former FB HC Briles and former Title IX coordinator Crawford. The subpoenas seek documents and communications regarding instances of sexual assault or harassment at Baylor, the Pepper Hamilton report, the Big 12's investigation into Baylor's implementation of the report's recommendations and the NCAA investigation into the scandal, among other items. Attorney Dunnam, who represents the alleged victims: "If someone wants to say that this is extreme, they’re forgetting what the university did and has admitted doing. They’re just trying to cover up, the individuals responsible, because there’s been no personal responsibility whatsoever. The only people supposedly held accountable were paid up to $15 million (such as Briles). That’s extreme." Baylor attorney Brown argues that much of the information is subject to attorney-client privilege, adding: "It is a double standard for the opposing attorneys to criticize Baylor for asserting privilege when they, too, have asserted privilege to protect documents. Assertion of privilege is a normal occurrence in litigation for plaintiffs and defendant." (link)
Florida District Court Judge Conway has rejected UCF's motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by former FB student-athlete De La Haye, who claims the school violated his free speech rights and due process rights by pulling his scholarship over concerns about the monetization of his YouTube channel. In issuing her ruling, Conway noted that De La Haye's First Amendment violation claim is possible, and unless UCF appeals the ruling, the matter will "likely be decided by a summary judgment this fall," according to the Orlando Sentinel. A waiver granted by the NCAA allowed De La Haye to keep his channel, provided no monetized content was based on "his athletics reputation, prestige or ability." Since reporting on his story has gone national, De La Haye's YouTube account has soared in popularity, growing from 50K subscribers to over 691K and from 2M views to almost 77M. (link)
Former Ohio State and current West Virginia Prez Gee released a statement this week indicating that he does not remember late physician Strauss, nor does he recall any allegations against him. "As has been conveyed to the investigators at Ohio State, I have no recollection of Dr. Strauss or any reports regarding him. I have always taken any allegations brought to my attention very seriously, and will continue to do so." Meanwhile, former OSU HR VP Tom has also indicated she doesn't "really ever remember hearing [Strauss's] name," adding: "I wish I was aware [then] because we certainly would have dealt with that very directly." (link); For his part, Ohio Congressman & former OSU Wrestling AC Jordan remains dug in, tweeting that "CNN is contacting all 100+ of our former staff and interns asking for dirt on me. How can you ever trust such #fakenews?" (link)
Louisville: WDRB columnist Crawford explores the parsing of the "serious from the seriously crazy" in a lawsuit filed by former MBB student-athletes who claim the NCAA has damaged their reputations. On one hand, Crawford sympathizes with the former players whom he says had "nothing to do with Andre McGee's stripper in prostitute parties," while on the other hand "we have attorneys dropping the names of Happy Chandler, Penn State...Muhammad Ali, Donald Trump...and a Morgan & Morgan 'dream team.' Your honor, I implore you." Full breakdown. (link); Courier-Journal columnist Sullivan offers a more somber take, positing that while former UL student-athlete Hancock "has been wronged" and "can be counted on to elicit empathy in a jury trail," that doesn't mean he can "win on a court with no net." Sullivan also cites Attorney Brown, who has experience in cases with the NCAA, who says: "The history of cases [that characterize the NCAA as an unfair monolith] as an underlying theme, as opposed to very specific analyzed and calculated financial examples, have not fared well." (link); Meanwhile, attorneys for former MBB HC Pitino are arguing that the ULAA has "no facts" to support the reasons it has given for letting Pitino go for cause. In a motion filed yesterday, Pitino's attorneys asked a judge to rule that the ULAA could not cite the three reasons it has given for parting ways with Pitino: the bad publicity resulting from his willful misconduct; failure to report the "suspicious" presence of sports agent Dawkins and subsequent late commitment of former recruit Bowen; and the NCAA's determination that Pitino had committed Level 1 infractions. Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
YouTube TV suffered the most untimely of outages during yesterday's World Cup semifinal match between England and Croatia and the Wimbledon quarterfinals being broadcast on Fox and ESPN, respectively. YouTube acknowledged the outages on Twitter, recognizing that the "timing is horrible." The outages reportedly only occurred in the U.S. This marks the second (and third) major sporting events interrupted by outages on YouTube TV. Service was also disrupted during Game 2 of the NBA Eastern Conference finals in May. (link); With Cristiano Ronaldo's move from Spanish giant Real Madrid to Italian giant Juventus, ESPN and Turner are reportedly in a two-horse race to secure rights to the Italian Serie A league. According to World Soccer Talk, IMG is offering the Serie A rights as part of a bundle along with the rights to England's FA Cup. Serie A rights had belonged to beIN but expired after this past season. (link); Nike and Adidas are struggling to meet the demand of World Cup jerseys following the unlikely runs of England, Belgium and Croatia to the semifinals. While both major firms are in the process of adopting a "fast fashion" model, Bloomberg reports the surprise success of the three squads has shown that they're "not quite there yet." Full report. While the Learfield Directors' Cup continues to be the gold standard for full-department competitive rankings, it seems like many major media outlets now have their own version. In CBS's case, "We rate every FBS school in three sports -- football, men's basketball and women's basketball -- along with two 'wild cards' among the school's most successful spectator sports: baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling." There's more explanation on the points system, but basically FB & MBB are more heavily weighted than the others. Ohio State finished first for 2017-18 with Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan & Duke rounding out the Top 5. First non-'Power 5' looks to be Houston at 38, Lowest-ranked P5 is Georgia Tech at 119. (link)
Big 12 leaders would love to see balance in FB scheduling among its 'Power 5' peer group. Iowa State boss Pollard: "I wish everybody had to play nine games. It’d be an equalizer because as long as everybody is playing nine, there’s always going to be this discussion of what’s really a fair strength of schedule." Commish Bowlsby doesn't see the College Football Playoff moving off its stance of giving each P5 league autonomy to operate as it best sees fit. West Virginia AD Lyons points to the importance of a strong non-conference slate for CFP consideration. (link)
More Lyons as the Mountaineers are trying to grow their cash reserves, "If our expenses are $2 million less than the revenue, great. We're going to put that into the reserve and hold onto it for when we need it. To me, the fiscal responsibility I have in this department and this university is making sure we do. [...] When you're dealing with facilities and older facilities, there are things that can go wrong, from air conditioning units to piping to electrical -- there are a number of different things you might not normally budget for that we have money set aside for just in case one of those things would happen. It could be $1 million or $2 million in a specific year, and it could be $3 million or $4 million." (link)
UIC goes off the board a bit with its corporate sponsorship portfolio, partners with 4FRONT, which is co-led by notable marketer Migala & previously known as SportsDesk. Flames AD Klassy: "4FRONT has established itself as a true leader in our field. They share our passion for aiming higher and continuously live out that mindset by not only thinking outside of the box, but living there. While 4FRONT has clients spanning the globe, Chicago is their home and they have led a great many local legacy sponsorship deals including MB Financial Park at Rosemont and most recently securing the naming rights for Impact Field. […] Our UIC staff talks frequently about being bold, taking risks and positioning ourselves at the forefront of the discussion on both the local and national levels." (link)
Minnesota's Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sports releases its 2017-18 HC trends study, finds the number of females leading women's sport programs at the 86 institutions surveyed increased by .0.3% from 2016-17. Overall, now 41.5% of women's programs at the schools are led by females. In the context of HC turnover, 46.1% went from one male to another, 19.8% from one female to another, 19.8% from male to female & 14.3% from female to male. Field Hockey, LAX, Golf, Equestrian & Softball leading the way in overall share, Track & Field/Cross Country one notable sport at the other end of the spectrum. Cincinnati & UCF the only two departments with 'A' grades, nine received 'Fs'. Lots more. (link)
More Personnel: Air Force Assoc AD/SWA Jarnigan hired as the next Southern Illinois SWA, will oversee three or four sports and the internal ops side of the department. (link); Richmond Asst. AD of Athletics Public Relations Moratti heads to Jacksonville as Assoc. AD for Athletic Communications. (link); Longtime St. Bonaventure Men's Swimming HC McNamee will transition to his new Asst. AD for Advancement role after 26 years as the Bonnies coach. The men's and women's Swimming programs will be combined moving forward. (link); Louisville donor and Papa John's founder Schnatter resigns as Chairman of the Board of Papa John's, after stepping down as CEO in December. Schnatter also removed himself from UofL's board yesterday. (link); Boise State Volleyball AC Buck promoted to HC of the Bronco's Beach Volleyball team. (link); Sticking with the Broncos, Utah AHC Livreri hired as the new Softball HC in Boise. (link); Idaho hires Northern Iowa Women's Soccer AC Clevenger as its new HC. (link); New Northern Colorado Prez Feinstein officially took over in Greeley on Monday. (link)
Alabama AD Byrne on the wire again as he lunched with Bama's SB Nation outlet & others stemming from his social media push to host the meal in his office. Byrne points to improved cell service at Bryant Denny Stadium this coming season with wi-fi upgrades still under consideration. Byrne also notes the importance of continually moving forward to ward off complacency. Still believes the hire of Baseball HC Bohannon is a "home run," says Bohannon takes more prospective student-athletes through the weight room than any other coach, also proud of the Crimson Tide's 13th place finish in the Capital One Cup. (link)
Watch: LEAD1 Executive Director McMillen with his latest 'Byte of the Week,' this one centered on integrity fees connected to legalized sports gambling. Interesting topic, here's the basic recap, "More than 20 states in the U.S. earmark gambling revenues for institutions of higher education. This is accepted policy in the U.S. – gambling revenues support higher education. Every state should earmark some of its sports betting revenue for their higher education institutions -- dedicated solely to compliance expenses. This will ensure that our universities have the resources to deal with the risks of sports betting." (link)
Western Kentucky AD Stewart on his department's recent athletic and academic success: "Big-picture wise, I feel really good about where we are because the winning continued. We've doubled everybody up and at the same time our graduation success rate is 85 percent, the highest it's been in WKU athletics. That speaks to our coaches and athletes and doing it the right way, and doing it well." The Hilltoppers picked up Conference USA titles in Volleyball and WBB this past year, marking the 23rd and 24th league titles since joining C-USA in 2014, more than twice the next conference school, Middle Tennessee State. Graduation rate is 85% with all but three of the Toppers programs achieving an APR of 970. Expects big things from MBB this season. (link)
The uniforms have been ordered for Purdue Fort Wayne and logos are being replaced around the department's facilities as AD Hartley Hutton hopes to have the transition complete by the time the fall sports seasons begin. Only one student-athlete affected by the transition because she changed her major to nursing, an Indiana University degree, and per NCAA rules is not eligible to be a PFW student-athlete. Some of the scoreboards will be changed in the next year, as well. (link)
Oklahoma introduces the One Pass, a "new innovative ticket option [that] allows University of Oklahoma fans the opportunity to see nine Sooner sports and more than 80 events." Adult cost is $150 while youth & senior citizens are $100. Gets $800 worth of value to Baseball, WBB, Men's and Women's Gymnastics, Soccer, Volleyball, Wrestling, non-conference MBB and select Softball games. Also gets a discount on merchandise and access to exclusive events like meet-and-greets, facility tours and autograph sessions. (link)
Also Noticed: Doesn't look like the SEC will switch to the 20-game league schedule for basketball any time soon. (link); Oregon hints at some of the changes that will be made to Hayward Field, including eliminating 400 seats when the lower-level seats are moved to ground level. New capacity will be 12,500 and the changes will "enhance the stadium's openness" and help "manage costs and increase functionality" of the venue. (link); Oklahoma debuts its Nike Jumpman unis, joins North Carolina, Michigan and Florida as the only schools to wear them in Football. (link)
Correction: The Auburn-Dyehard relationship is of the merchandising variety, not licensing, as was mentioned in a clip yesterday.
The Athletic's Potkey profiles "leadership guru" Jon Gordon, author of "Training Camp" & other high-profile titles. Clemson FB HC Swinney implemented the 11 traits discussed in the book in the Tigers 2011 season, which, he credits in helping the Tigers capture its first ACC Title in 20 years. Gordon now speaks at Clemson's pre-season camp each year and is on-call for advice as needed. Other notable Gordon clients include UCLA MBB, Georgia FB, Maryland LAX, the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Dodgers and Rams and Pittsburg Pirates. Lots more here on Gordon, who lost a run for city council and fell victim to the dot-com bust before opening a Moe's Southwest Grill and focusing his time as a writer about positivity. His latest book, "The Power of a Positive Team" came out last month. Lots here. (link)
