Greetings entrepreneurs and friends of SiMODiSA.

One thing we must never fail to celebrate is the great momentum we are achieving in our ever-growing ecosystem that is supporting entrepreneurs in South Africa. From incubators that focus on startup ideas, to accelerators that work with scaling up businesses, there is no shortage of initiatives that are geared towards empowering entrepreneurs with the necessary tools. However, with this great network of support that has been built, the one problem we still face is that there is a huge gap that exists between entrepreneurs and the opportunities that are being presented to support them. This results in a lack of entrepreneurs leveraging on all the information and opportunities that they have; high failure rate of startups and established businesses; burgeoning unemployment, especially amongst the youth of this country and a limited contribution of small businesses towards the growth of our economy. We need to find a healthy medium, where the effort that is being applied towards growing the ecosystem of support, is the same effort applied to ensuring that entrepreneurs do benefit, are informed and have access to such support. Until that healthy balance has been reached, we will fail to see the return on all our investments.

With that being said, our favorite June activity highlights include the MEST Africa Summit in Cape Town, a Pan-African tech conference, that brought together leading global entrepreneurs, investors and executives to discuss the African tech ecosystem. The Innovation Festival Durban (IFD), hosted by Innovate Durban also had a sterling line up of local and international contributors. The launch of The Innovation Hub’s eKasi Lab in Sebokeng, Gauteng and SiMODiSA’s second Policy Dialogue for the year, hosted with Webber Wentzel and SAVCA, discussing the impact of Exchange Control regulations on IP & Loop Structures. SiMODiSA was proud to be present in all these activities and the common thread amongst all is that South Africa is reinforcing technology and innovation as the fiber of its economic growth.
