The Kansas AD search looks to be entering its final stages & it's starting to get a bit wacky on the interwebs as JayhawkSlant.com's Kirby says "just because UCF AD White released a statement saying he was happy at his current job doesn't mean he was a candidate at Kansas." Further, Kirby also writes that reports indicating SMU AD Hart was the frontrunner "isn't exactly true either. Hart may have been involved but from all indications [KU Chancellor] Girod wasn't putting of all his efforts into him." Finally, Kirby doesn't think rumors of an offer being extended last week are accurate. (link)
Ohio State AD Smith on the legalization of sports gambling, "It concerns me. It concerns me from the point of view of the athlete — making sure we protect people. My biggest concern is educating, educating, educating, and then putting in firewalls to protect them. […] We know gambling exists now. We’re not naive. But as it becomes more transparent and prevalent, our kids are going to be more susceptible to people trying to influence them to do things. How do we protect them from making a bad decision? […] In my view, we’ll be fine and we shouldn’t overreact. I’m not supportive of (legalized college sports betting), but we are where we are and we have to deal with it." (link)
LSU boss Alleva says "it would be a disaster" if improvements to Tiger Stadium aren't ready for kick-off in early September. Key enhancements include more point of sale locations for concessions to upgrade the fan experience, as well as more bathrooms. There's also work coming to a close on the new FB operations space, a new Baseball weight room, a pro player's locker room & indoor practice digs for Softball. Alleva on the importance of pro player locker rooms, "Whenever you can have professional athletes hanging around with our current kids, they set the right tone, they set the right attitude and show great work ethic." (link)
Ohio Republican Congressman & former Ohio State Wrestling AC Jordan responds to questions about his knowledge of alleged inappropriate behavior toward student-athletes by a former OSU team doctor. Jordan: "It’s not true. I never knew about any type of abuse. If I did, I would have done something about it. And look, if there are people who are abused, then that’s terrible and we want justice to happen." Jordan also says, "We’ve got the truth on our side," and indicates he'll answer any questions about the situation with the legal teams involved. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Spencer Stuart consultant Frangos pens for the Harvard Business Review: "3 Transitions Even the Best Leaders Struggle With." 1) The leap into leadership - 50-60% of execs fail within the first 18 months of being promoted or hired. "The single best thing a new executive can do to avoid a brief tenure is actively pursue feedback."; 2) The organizational transition - "By far the biggest derailer for executives during this transition is misinterpreting the need for change or getting on the wrong side of it." Solution: get ahead of change; and, 3) The pinnacle paradox - C-suite leaders have reached the top of their careers and many don't know what comes next, which combined with job stress can lead to burnout. Always be rethinking your relationship with sponsors. Conclusion: "The capacity for reinvention is the single-most-important career attribute for executives today. Successful reinvention may look different for each of us, but if we do not attempt it, we are sure to fail." (link)

How will the MBB-FBI developments impact MBB recruiting this summer? That question & more are answered by UC Davis HC Les, West Virginia AC Martin, Bethune-Cookman HC Ridder & ESPN's Borzello in AthleticDirectorU's latest Experts' Roundtable. Martin says the Mountaineers' approach won't change as they're commonly going after 3- and 4-star guys who are "unlikely to leave in the first several years of their college careers." Martin also indicates it's "usually easy for us to determine who's 'in it' for the right reasons." Les on potential changes to the summer circuit, "It is imperative that we find a way to make sure it operates more effectively and efficiently for all involved. Like many growth industries, the legislation has not kept up with the increase of money and power that has occurred so quickly in club basketball and college sports." Both Ridder & Les note the importance of ADs understanding its unique value proposition & how it relates to its place in the MBB world. More, including Borzello's belief that administrators need to be more hands-off in the recruiting process & let coaches do their jobs. (link)
1.Question's @TaiMBrown catches up with Forward Progress Prez Shukie to discuss the NCAA's new Academic Based Revenue Distribution Initiative. Of note, "The first year we're looking at $50k per school. And then on to year five, up to $500k per school for the next eight years. So we're talking about big money that could be coming to campus. […] The key is to work and project out years in advance about where you might stand in terms of APR and graduation rates. Essentially, you have to project, analyze, and utilize to be on top of things. […] Obviously, the easiest way is to bring in better prepared students, but that isn't always possible. So schools have to be smart and strategic about what they are doing." (link)
The Herald-Dispatch's Landon believes the redshirt rule should apply to all sports, not just football. At least one non-football coach agrees with him, as Marshall MBB HC D'Antoni offers: "That would be great because we would get a little bit better evaluation of the true freshmen. I think it's a good rule. It's almost like declaring for the NBA Draft as an underclassman, but not signing with an agent and coming back. This gives a true freshman a chance to get in and see if he really needs to be red shirted. And you're only helping the kid. I don't know how far they would take it, but certainly six to 10 games wouldn't hurt. It's better for the kids. That's the point. It's not so much about us, it's just good for the kids. As it is now, you might make a mistake and the kid pays for your mistake." Landon: "It would be a mistake not to implement this rule across the board. Anybody from Title IX listening out there?" (link)
As Purdue AD Bobinski gears up for his third year atop the department in West Lafayette, he reflects on the success of the 2017-18 athletic year. Recalls sitting in the audience during the Golden Pete Awards show, held annually to celebrate the achievements of Boilermaker student-athletes, listening to Track & Field student-athlete and Boilermaker Athletic Council Prez Ebikwo tell the audience that Purdue is just getting started on a path to bigger things. Bobinski: "I think it’s clear folks have received the message and have bought into the theory of higher expectations and not settling for average performances. We’re capable of more than that and I think that has permeated through our staff, our coaches but our student-athletes feel that. To me, that’s a real plus. ... It’s about continuing that vibe and energy that is around the program right now and taking that to the next step. We need to continue to move that forward. While people talk about it and I think it’s tangible to lots of folks that are around these days, it feels different around here. We’re nowhere close to concluding that process. We’re still, to me, in the very first stages of a race. If this is a relay, I’m not sure we’ve hit the first handoff yet." (link)
Kinda feels like click bait, but also kinda fun. Yahoo's Forde ranks every 'Power 5' brand based on their cumulative 2017-18 competitive performances, as well as offering a "trajectory" note (up, down, steady). Top 10: Stanford (steady), Florida (steady), USC (steady), UCLA (up), Texas (steady), Ohio State (down), North Carolina (down), Michigan (steady), Penn State (steady), Virginia (down). Forde says the Pac-12's 'Conference of Champions' moniker is absolutely true, calls Minnesota the most overachieving brand, Miami (FL) the top underachiever. (link, link)
While it may not have a significant impact on admissions processes ("Court rulings already are more powerful than guidance from any administration"), the Trump Administration "rescinded guidance issued by the Obama administration on how colleges can legally consider race and ethnicity in admissions decisions." Education Secretary DeVos urges institutions to look at the Supreme Court's opinions on the matter, "The Supreme Court has determined what affirmative action policies are constitutional, and the court’s written decisions are the best guide for navigating this complex issue." (link)
Could Verizon's Oath already be spun off? That's what The Information's Toonkel reports & it sounds like Oath CEO Armstrong may be leading the charge behind the scenes. However, the price tag could be $10B & Armstrong is equally interested in building Oath into a legitimate rival to Google & Facebook as an advertising option for brands around the world. Insiders say Armstrong has been frustrated with the slow pace of play within Verizon, though he now has his team in place to move more quickly. (link)
Washington co-DC Kwiatkowski, AKA "the other Coach K," camped with the Kitsap Sun's Stark to discuss the leadership philosophy embraced by Huskies HC Petersen. Coach K: "We talk about low-ego, high-output players. That’s part of it. ... When I say low-ego — everybody has got ego — but it’s like you’re able to keep that in check and understand the importance of the sacrifice you might have to make for the betterment of our team. That goes back to when you’re recruiting players and coaches. Those are the values you’re looking for in people." On the preseason hype leading up to UW's season-opener against Auburn: "It’s like this every year. Whether we win or lose, the first game won’t define us. Then it’s on to the next game. The old cliché everybody hates to hear, 'one game at a time,' well, that’s how you do it. When you get your head over your skis, that’s when you fall down at the bottom." Not personally bothered about giving up a share of the play-calling duties to DC Lake: "The whole is better than the individual. You get enough people aligned together like that you create a culture that people want to be around." (link)
