Former New Mexico State Historian and native son of Questa, Dr. Estevan Rael-Gálvez, will offer a talk and community workshop: Gathering Memory: Object, Photo & Story, and lead a community memory workshop this Sunday, July 8, at 2 pm, at the Questa VFW Hall.
Participants, please bring:
- an object that holds a special memory about a person, event, or place
- a photograph that could tell a story, and/or
- the name of one ancestor whose life holds special meaning
The event is free and open to the public.
The effort to bring Dr. Rael-Gálvez to Questa is hosted by the Questa History & Community Trail (a project of The Questa Creative Council, a non-profit organization), and its sponsors:
- New Mexico Humanities Council
- Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area
- National Park Service.
- LEAP
LEAP (Land, Experience and Art of Place), has also developed “Questa Stories ~ Community Memory Project,” a collection point and archive for local stories, oral histories, conversations, image and artifacts of, by, and about the communities, peoples, and places of North Central New Mexico. To listen to oral histories, have your story recorded, or to find out more, visit QuestaStories.org.
About the presenter:
Dr. Estevan Rael-Gálvez has led a full career as a successful senior executive, including most recently as the Senior Vice President at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Today, he is a writer and founder and principal, Creative Strategies 360°, a consulting firm which works with organizations and communities locally, nationally, and internationally. His decades-long leadership reveals the value he places on building and fostering community, nurturing and raising consciousness, and cultivating and inspiring creativity.
In a recent article Dr. Rael-Gálvez authored on the importance of community-centered archives, he highlighted several strategies that support these efforts, including using photographs, objects, and storytelling to engage -- but also to strengthen -- a community’s sense of itself.
An example of this effort was completed in 2016 when Rael-Gálvez developed Culture Connects Santa Fe, the City of Santa Fe’s first cultural plan. This initiative included an engagement, "What We Hold: Objects, Story, and Memory," which encouraged the public to share about an object that mattered to them and also was connected to Santa Fe.
The July 8 workshop in Questa will be a similar undertaking.
