Westar and KCPL Merge to Form "Evergy" While Distributed Generation Rate Cases Continue

In May: The Kansas Corporation Committee (KCC) approved the merger of Westar and Great Plains Energy (KCP&L). For the immediate future, the company will continue to serve its customers under the familiar Westar and KCP&L brand names. Evergy, Inc. (Evergy) is the name to represent their combined identity. Contact information, billing and account information, program enrollment and outage reporting will remain the same for customers of KCP&L and Westar. Read More

In June: Public hearings regarding rate increases by Westar Energy were presented to the KCC which included:

Increase the monthly service fee and electric rates for all customers and add a tariff for some solar customers.
Standard monthly service fee for all customers will increase $4, climbing to $18.50.
Increase costs for Residential solar customers who installed on or after October 28, 2015.
Electric vehicle owners will see new rates (rates are voluntary).

In July: Westar, Staff, CURB and other interveners signed a settlement agreement on July 16th to reduce Westar rates by $66 million dollars, instead of raising them by $54 million. This decrease means residential customers won't have their monthly base rate raised from $14.50 to $18.50 per month. Read More

Climate and Energy Project, Vote Solar and the Sierra Club did not sign the settlement agreement due to the potential negative impact on the solar and small wind industries.The demand charge for DG customers is still in the settlement. CEP, Vote Solar and the Sierra Club cross examined Westar's witnesses during a hearing at the KCC that began July 23. Vote Solar has submitted testimony that does a great job making the case that the demand charge is unwarranted and punitive. Read More

It's important to note that across the nation solar is winning against the utilities. Almost half of all decided cases end in a wash or no increase for utilities. Read More

KCPL has filed for demand charges very similar to Westar's punitive charges for solar on Kansas Residential properties. At this time, hearing dates regarding rate increases have not been announced.

NOW is the time to install solar if you are a KCP&L Kansas customer. If approved, the future punitive charges are not retroactive and systems installed before the active date (TBD) will be grandfathered in. Read More

Recent Home SunPower Solar Installations

Kudos to our installers for working through the HOT Spring and Summer months installing solar in both Kansas and Missouri. Of these 5 installations, 3 have interconnection agreements completed and are fully functioning. Two of which have collected 548.7kW of energy in the last month. That is equivalent to 1.08 barrels of crude oil conserved, or 919.28 car miles not driven, or 10.23 trees planted, or 880.06 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions avoided.

In addition, a previous customer decided to add more solar to their energy system to offset energy used in a recent home addition/remodel. Their entire system has generated 38.1 MWh of energy which is the equivalent to 59,141.69 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions avoided or the equivalent of 1,489.56 trees planted.
