Beating the Heat
For our farm, which is focused on raising all of our food in natural conditions, this heat wave has been stressful.
Last night, two of the sows went into labour. We think the heat induced them a bit early as the wee ones had trouble breaking the placenta and needed help. Everyone is doing great and we're now at 4 healthy litters of tamworth piglets that will be ready in the Fall.
For the chickens, which regulate their body temperature by breathing (evaporating water droplets from their lungs), we've doubled the number of waterers, built additional shade AND Dave has dunked about 50 in cold water. We check on them 4-6 times a day, refreshing their water and misting or dunking any that seem to need it.
The turkeys, quail, pigeons, laying hens, duck & geese seem unaffected. And thankfully just before the heat weave, we had decided to take a break from raising rabbits until we can build a new enclosure for them.
Oh, and the mushrooms...well, you've heard us say that we while we cultivate indoors we don't condition the air and have to work with the outdoor temperature. This heat has decimated a few varieties (brown oyster and pioppino) and resulted in smaller yields of the others.
