Junior President

Welcome to another fantastic edition of Jetstream.

After a busy day of footy on Sunday, I had the absolute pleasure to pop down to Amaroo on Sunday morning to present at the Auskick Rookie Presentation Day. Over the last 10 years our Auskick Rookie Program has gone from strength to strength, this year we had over 80 kids at our Amaroo program and over 20 kids in our Gundaroo program. I would like to say a HUGE thanks to Lisa Murphy (Amaroo) who has taken charge of the Amaroo program since February. Lisa has been assisted by hubby Gavin, brother Mark and sister in law Nicole, who have been at the oval bright and early every Sunday morning setting up activities and pumping up balls. I would also like to say thanks to Sean Egan who has for the 2nd year in a row led the Gundaroo program, providing a much needed opportunity for our kids in the surrounding region to get a taste for our great sport. Of course the Auskick sessions would not be successful without the valuable parent volunteers to help run activities and coach teams. The smiles on the kids faces said it all !

While I was at Amaroo I took the opportunity to watch our Youth Girls Under 15's take on Ainslie. Meanwhile the Shave for a Cure action to cut Danielle Ceasar's hair was about to start...after some fierce bidding from her team mates, I won the opportunity to cut the first plait...certainly a worthy cause.

The date for the Junior Presentation Day has been set - 22 September at Burgman School in Forde (times TBA).

Thanks to all the amazing people who have rolled up their sleeves and helped out in the canteen over the last few months, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately Shirish our Canteen Coordinator is no longer able to perform this role...we are desperately looking for someone to help out, otherwise we will have no choice but close the canteen. The role is not too onerous, do some shopping, set-up the canteen, come back in the afternoon to collect the cash and then reconcile and bank the takings. If you are willing to help out (modest honorarium applies) please send me an e-mail.

Best of luck to all teams this weekend.

Cheers

Queanbeyan Tigers 16.9.105 def. Gungahlin Jets 3.6.24

We travelled interstate to take on the Queanbeyan Tigers. The Tigers were well structured and fit. Unfortunately, we went down Queanbeyan 16.9.105 def. Gungahlin 3.6.24 in arguably one of our most disappointing performances of the year.

We started well, against the wind we controlled parts of the quarter and were outscored three goals to one. We played well in the second quarter also, however, struggled to take advantage of the wind reaching half time 25 points down. The wind picked up to Queanbeyan’s advantage in the third quarter and they put their foot down, kicking 6 goals to one. The game was over in the last and you could sense the team was deflated.

Congratulations to debutant Dutchy (M.Holland), who got a call-up into the seniors in his third game of footy…ever!! He went well and excelled at getting under the skin of his opponent. Lukey McKay was best afield kicking all of our three goals, while Matty Hambleton continued to accumulate the footy on the wing.

We will look to regroup this week and continue to develop a Jets style of footy. We will hope to pull together more consistency in our match this week against Ainslie at home.

Queanbeyan were always going to be a tough challenge as they are the league leaders in this years Rising Stars comp.

Not only are they on top, they are a side that have used the maximum number of over age players, which gives them a huge physical presence.

Our boys were not phased as each week is just another team - another challenge.

The Jets were very competitive taking it up to the tiger's, to the point of being disruptive. The boys did not back off for 4 quarters with relentless tackling causing the tiger's to earn every possession.

The Tigers are a very well balanced side and even though we lost on the score board - I believe we had a victory with the way we played against a bigger, stronger opposition.

Unfortunately the Jets have a had a bad run with injuries with a couple more to add to the list from last Saturday. This gave other players a taste of RS football for the future, which is great for a young man's football development.

With only 6 games remaining and the race to the finals, it's a big challenge for the squad, but as we have done all year- we have stayed positive and will continue to play Jet's footy only.

Like something out of the Australian Diamonds playbook, the Raptors absolutely smashed it on the court this week. After our second win of the season (an impressive 38-13 no less!), we are on cloud nine!

The dark horse in GS, Jaimie was an absolute powerhouse in the circle in the circle as she held her position and shot from the heart. Add in Emily as GA and we had perfection that resulted in goal after goal. Rayna and Kayte dominated in C and WA, supporting both the attack  and defensive players flawlessly. Letiesha showed off her effortless ability (have you seen her stretch over the ball?) in GK and Kandace as per usual put her body on the line to regain possession in GD on more than one occasion. Our little Bec was a standout in WD, sticking to her opponent like (super)glue and bringing her passion for the game that we all love.

We are so proud to be Raptors and all our hard work on the training track has paid off! We now have a three week break over the school holidays, so girls, keep training and our third win isn't too far away!

Youth Girls Under 18

The morning frost cleared away to reveal perfect conditions at Amaroo in which to play footy.  Ainslie were sitting third on the ladder and we needed to start winning games if we were to take that spot off them by seasons end.  And what better way to do this than by beating the team we wish to replace?

Slightly down on numbers, for the second week in a row, we played with 16 a side.  Having Kaitlyn and Chloe from the Under 15s gave us 2 on the bench.  Maddy played in the Under 15’s beforehand to help out with James’ numbers.  And the return of Odelia after a few weeks of sickness gave us some much needed speed.  Lucky Ainslie looked like they were in the same boat with regards to players.  We went out with a 5 man defence, 6 man midfield and 5 man forwardline.  Mads joined Matisse and Sam in the midfield with Jenna in the ruck.  Breeza and Odelia lined up on the wings.  We experimented with Estelle starting in defence before running through the centre on bouncedowns to take her position up forward.  This meant that Dani and Maddy had to carry the half forward line and Bronte and Lizzie had to work harder out of the goal square.  B2, Kim, Steph, Sarah and Rhi formed the defence.

It would prove to be a hard fought, low scoring match with neither side able to get more than a goal in front of the other.  Our slow starts to matches have hurt us in the past.  Today that would not be a problem.  Ruck tap from Jenna to the midfield, a quick kick forward, Maddy takes the ball runs into the 50 and lets loose a super kick that parts the big sticks and gives the team a huge boost, just 20 seconds into the match.  With our defence manned up and our midfield pushing down back, it was hard for the Ainslie forwards to get a clean touch.  The forwards drifted further down field and our link up play around the ground was excellent.  The ball spent most of the quarter in our half of the ground but we only kicked one more point.  Ainslie eventually managed to push forward and bounce a goal past our defenders.  The quarter time siren went with us holding the narrowest of leads 7 to 6.

Chloe went into defence and Kaitlyn to the forwardline for the start of the second.  Chloe made in immediate impart with her good body work to force her opponent under the contest, where she was able to gather the ball when it came out the back and handpass it onto Sarah coming out of defence.  Maddy was having a great game up forward, giving us a good target to kick to.  We conceded another goal and were only able to kick 2 points in reply.  But with Sam, Breeza and Matisse controlling the play and Mads hitting every contest we were never really out classed.  Kim crashed her way through the backline.  Sarah’s reading of the ball in flight allowed her to take some timely marks.  B2 never looks like she is running at anything over 50%, but she also never looks like getting beaten in any contest.  Rhi covered plenty of ground as she worked hard to present options coming out of defence.  And Steph knows how to lock down on an opponent.  The girls looked the business.  At the long break we were slightly behind 1.3.9 to 2.1.13.

The half time changes saw Odelia go from wing to forward, Maddy from forward to centre and Mads from centre to wing.  Lizzie went back and Rhi went forward.  With a taller defence we choked the Ainslie every time they ventured forward.  The midfield took over and with the ball living in our forwardline, we looked dangerous.  Odelia got her hands on the ball and used her speed to work it towards our goal.  In one 5 minute purple-patch, the ball seemed to follow her everywhere she went.  Unfortunately we were not able to capitalise on our dominance and only scored 2 points.  However our defence was well on top and didn't let anything through.  Kim stood tall in tackles and refused to be brought down.  Lizzie destroyed the ball in the air.  Sarah gathered the ball on the ground, in the air, all the time.  B2 still made every contest look like it was played in slow motion, as she strolled away with the footy.  And Chloe showed that she is more than handy down back.  We were just 2 points down going into the last quarter.  1.5.11 to 2.1.13.

Steph and Kim did a forward/back swap with Rhi and Odelia to start the last quarter.  And Estelle earmarked Ainslie's best defender as a player she needed to crack down on.  We had double the scoring shots, yet were still behind.  Steph showed her versatility by playing a great last quarter up forward.  She lead to the ball carrier and locked the ball in.  At one point there was discussions on the bench that the part of the oval closest to the carpark should be called the 'Steph Pocket' as she refused to let the ball get out.  And with Estelle cutting out their main rebounding defender, Ainslie couldn't work the ball out of our forwardline.  We kicked a behind to draw to within one point.  Ainslie responded with a point of their own.  Then we worked the ball forward again. Sam got on the end of some great passing to kick the winning goal.  The girls then deflected everything Ainslie could throw at them for the last 5 minutes to restrict them to just one point for the last half and run out 4 point winners.  2.6.18 to 2.2.14.

Best Players went to:

Maddy who threw herself into everything during the match and pulled down some good marks, despite having already played a match.

Breeza was again everywhere and her long accurate kicking to teammates further down the field is a great asset.

Steph was strong in defence, handy in the middle of the ground and outstanding up forward.

Matisse put in another hard running captains game.  Her understanding of where to position herself around the ground, lead to some decisive intercept marks and some brilliant creative forward plays.

Odelia was a little lost on the wing, but her efforts after half time was great to watch.  She opened up the forwardline with her speed, and cleared the ball out of defence with her daring runs.

Estelle pointed out that Ainslie had a player who needed to be shut down, and then took on the task.  At one stage it looked like she was going to clear the ball, only for Estelle to punch the ball out of her hands, get around her and move it forward again.

A special mention goes to Dani, who held an auction before the game for people to cut her long plats in an effort to raise money for the Leukaemia foundation.   With her game day hair auction and her online donations, Dani was able to raise around $1,500, however don't let her hard work stop there, you can still donate online at www.leukaemia.org.au .  Football clubs are made up of a vast array of people, and to have someone with Dani's character in our team is a privilege.

Youth Girls Under 15

A foggy start at Amaroo this week and the girls were not to inclined to do anything except stay in the sheds next to the heaters. We had a quick warm up and a long chat. This week’s game against Ainslie was a big opportunity for us to see how far we had progressed. The last few weeks had been very good and building on that would take us a long way towards a win today. We talked about playing 4 quarter footy and focusing on playing our game, working hard for each other and running out the game as we have done over the last few weeks.

Despite the cold the girls started on fire and we were quickly out of the first ruck contest with a great kick to Hayley on the wing. Working with ZAK the ball went forward and Kaitlyn picked it up and kicked the goal. We were on the board and looking good. Ainslie responded but found it hard in the middle, Tori and Eboney were very strong, challenging for the ball, tackling, bumping and generally making Ainslie earn every possession. Morgan, Marissa and Chloe had their hands full across half back as Ainslie had some speed and strength and our match ups weren’t quite right. They pushed forward and peppered the goals. Josie Mia and Grace kept them under pressure and we hassled and tackled them into several points. The relentless pressure resulted in two goal and we were down by 10 at the first break.

The second was a repeat of the first. We had our chances to go forward but didn’t control the ball. We spent a lot of time in the back 50 and the defenders were working overtime. Morgan was damaging and winning a lot of possession. We made a couple of skill error and got punished. When we did get forward the girls were working hard and running the bigger Ainslie backs around. We made space but couldn’t get a handle on the ball. The mids were continuing to get physical. Jezza now had 8 tackles and Marissa was getting some ball out to the forwards. Tori and Ebony were working like demons. Down by 26 at the long break didn’t reflect the effort being put in.

At the long break it was all about playing 4 quarter footy. We had started well and were very competitive but making some errors and missing some opportunities. A little more focus and talk and we knew we could respond. And we did. The sun came out, the fog lifted and we so did the intensity and skills of the girls. There was even more work from the mids, Tori was getting possessions, Jezza made more tackles and was delivering some great kicks to the half forward line. We continued to spread it wide and use our speed. Maddy had moved to the half back line to play loose and run through the middle and she had an immediate impact giving us some more possession and drive. This took a little pressure of the rest of the girls who began to get on top. Chloe had shut down their big forward target and Marissa was running with and over the top of their speed option.  Lily had shut her opponent out of the game. Grace and Mia were halving all the contests and Josie took a great pack mark in front of goal when we were under some real pressure. We rebounded down the wing like we trained. Hayley creating an option and ZAK and Kayla making great leads. Ash was everywhere, the small forwards continued to run and the backline was getting dominance. It was tough and hard fought, we were back in the game and getting some ascendency. Both teams picked up a point for the quarter. The tide had turned.

The girls lifted again for the last quarter. We had the control in the middle. We went forward more often and the backs were pushing up to stop Ainslie just inside the 50, not just in front of goal. The second and third efforts from all the girls was excellent. They continued to run hard, they stuck to the structure and game plan and created opportunities. Kailtyn, Marissa and Jessa kept driving it in to the forward 50. Zoe, one of the two smallest players on the ground, was in amongst the big girls, showing great courage and commitment to the team. Josie cut of Ainslie across half back and we opened them up down the wing. A driving kick to Kendal deep in the 50 gave her a chance, she beat two Ainslie defenders and goaled. We had won the quarter and the half, but not the game. It was a huge improvement on our first game against Ainslie and another step in the development of the team. We are getting better each week and playing some strong, structured footy. As a coach it is really pleasing to see the team coming together and working hard for each other. It would have been easy for them to drop their heads at half time, but they didn’t. They lifted, worked together, believed in each other and stepped up.

This week we say goodbye to Kayla and Skye, our manager, who are moving to Brisbane. I want to say a big Thank You to Skye for helping out as manager this year. We will miss Kayla a lot as she has been and integral part of the team for a couple of seasons and she is a character. We will continue to play “as a whole” even though she is not here. We wish them both the best up North.

This week’s awards went to:

Tori, Ebony, Zoe, Morgan, Chloe, Kailtyn

Under 15

It was a big week of milestones for the Jets Under 15s. Congratulations to #7 Josh Ozanne – recognised for reaching 100 games for the Jets.

50 game milestones were also recognised for #4 Noel Crowther and #6 Ethan Hopman. Well done. Steve really enjoyed the strong handshakes and the team absolutely demolished the run through banners.

While the Jets took to the field with a lot of confidence, the Hawks too an immediate lead in the game, scoring a goal in the first minute. The shock of the immediate score woke up our players who responded with some strong efforts in the first quarter. #1 Biar Biar was doing an excellent job in the ruck and running with the ball, putting on his trademark step around tacklers. #55 Nick Beaverprovided opportunities to move the ball forward. He was being helped out by #3 Jett O’Shaunghnessy. The ball bounced from half-back line to half-back line. The defensive efforts of #4 Noel and #10 Braydo Jones kept the Hawks from scoring. With Noel showing everyone just how to tackle and Braydo clearing the ball out with great left foot kicks – finding #7 Josh Ozanne, #6 Ethan Hopman, #48 Benny Savill through the mid-field.

The effort put into the game in the first quarter continued in the second with #5 ‘JayMac’ Jordan McMaster and #55 ‘Robbo’ Jordan Robinson getting themselves into the game. Robbo in particular showed no fear in tackling bigger-bodied players and winning the ball. #43 Will Sheil, #81 Cayden Ported and #19 Jake Robinson all started to get the ball. Will running off players, Cayden finding himself at the bottom of packs and Jake taking marks and running the ball forward. #24 Ash Fage and #13 Angus Cowburn took opportunities in the ruck to get their hands on the ball. A shoulder injury to #50 Nick saw him out of the game. #14 Nic Gainey stepped up into the centre and on-the-ball efforts.

The strategy to use pocket kicks and keep possession of the ball really was on show in the third quarter. #23 Jack Riley and #10 Braydon started to kick and mark and run the ball out of the back line, linking up with #30 Alex Looby and #5 JayMac. #Biar and #16 Lochie Cossins almost worked a goal for the Jets.

While the Jets started the final quarter with an eight-goal deficit, they played the best quarter of football for the year, to have more scoring shots than the Hawks and keeping the Hawks goal-less for the quarter. #26 Ishka Saini spent time in the middle. #23 Jack went onto the ball and #10 Braydo and #4 Noel repelled Hawks attacks, moving the ball forwarded through #8 Blake Hardy, #30 Alex and #48 Benny.

Final scores were Hawks 8 goals, 5 behinds, 53 points to the Jets 5 behinds, 5 points. Game day awards went to #48 benny Savill, #4 Noel Crowther and #10 Braydo Jones.

Everyone who attended saw that the team played a solid game. And despite the chilling winds, lots of parents were there to help and support the team. I really appreciated Kyran O’Shaughnessy tacking responsibility for goal umpiring and James Savill doing the boundary line – again! Thank you also to Stacey Ozanne for time keeping and Glenn Looby for keeping the scoreboard up to date. Thanks also to all those who helped-out in the canteen as well.

Next week we travel into NSW and play at Town Park, Queanbeyan. See you there next Saturday.

Go Jets!

Team Manager

Congratulations to Josh Ozanne on 100 games!! That's a brilliant achievement for a young Jet!!

Also another fantastic milestone is 50 games succeeded by Noel Crowther and Ethan Hopman

Well done boys!!

Under 14

The mighty Under 14s Jetters were back at home sweet home after 4 straight weeks on the road, and wasn’t it great to be back, as the players (and parents) were greeted with a chilling 6 degrees and a howling Amaroo Doctor as they drove into the Amaroo car park! As they made their way towards the stands everyone could have been forgiven for thinking they were reenacting a Sir Douglas Mawson Antarctican expedition, such was the ferocity of the blizzard! Nevertheless, their opponents, the Tuggeranong Lions, crossing from the southside savannah, would have been dreading the Saturday morning trek north to Gungahlin and were no doubt regretting taking the option to get out of bed as they drove up Horse Park Drive!

The Jets were looking notably understrength going into the match, missing Tanner (quad strain), The Moose (unavailable), Butt (concussion, after an unfortunate training mishap), Calderazzo (unavailable), Bolton (gastro), Ulrich (flu), Marshall (Europe) and Peterson (knee), however they had regained the services of Greenwood and Snell, and Arnie and Josh Baldwin had generously volunteered to back up from the Under 13s.

The match began well for the Jetters with a scintillating centre clearance as Hoffy, Jesse and Joven combined for a slick forward 50 entry. The Jets remained camped inside their forward line for the majority of the early part of the match (the reason I say “camped” is because it was intense). However the windy conditions, combined with a desperate Lions backline, kept the home side goal-less until the 7 minute mark when Scotty kicked into a leading Daniel Hoffmann in the forward pocket. The Hoffmeister calmly went back and check-sided, directly in the wind, a magnificent goal and the Jets were on the board! The match developed into a bit of a Tugger-of-war for the next few minutes before the Lions bit back and kicked their first goal, against the run of play. Shortly after, the Jets soared forward again – Jordan Snell charged into a pack like a wild boar, knocking a hapless Lions defender to the ground, spilling the Sherrin to the floor – Jakey Rawlins snatched the ball up and dished off a delightful handball to Cal Huender, who skipped in towards goal and let loose with a magnificent left foot running effort which went straight through for a goal, and the Jets found themselves 11 points in front at the first change!

The Jets began the second quarter strongly after a bruising tackle from Scotty Lee and proceeded to dominate play, however the gale-force wind was proving to be the most difficult opponent for the Jets. Liam was busy up forward and kicked a behind before Hoffy took an uncontested mark in the forward pocket and snapped a Stevie-J style sausage roll to put the Jetters further in front. The Jets continued to work hard around the clearances and were sharing the ball around nicely, but the highlight of the quarter was a majestic towering contested mark in the backline from Jaiken “Nobody beats the” Bell! Ding dong and the half time siren sounded with the Jets 19-points in front of the dogged Lions.

The Jets jumped out of the blocks well in the 3rd quarter and were handballing nicely out of the stoppages. Jaiken was moved forward to provide another target and he didn’t disappoint, taking a nice contested grab but slamming the resulting set shot into the holy ghost from a tight angle. Shortly after, the Y-Man dished a nice handball out to Jib, who charged towards goal and drilled a nice low bullet to the leading Jaiken, who snaffled it up, went back, and this time punted it through for his first goal of the season and first ever Jets goal!!! A couple of minutes later the J-Bell was at it again, pouncing on a loose ball in the forward line, selling some candy and drilling the leather pill through from 35m – classic stuff, the J-Bell was sounding the alarm!! Halfway through the quarter Hoffy brought out the worst in one of the Lions’ players, obviously frustrated at the H-Man’s brilliance, throwing a footy straight at him, unsurprisingly missing his target and instead copping the wrath of umpire Micky P, who dished him out a yellow card, World Cup style! Finn Dubb took a massive contested mark to finish off the quarter and the Jetters were 33 points in the clear at the final change!

The final quarter was an ugly, scrappy affair – the Jets had the ball in their forward half for the entirety of the quarter, however the Lions decided to throw every man and his cub back, which made scoring as difficult as facing Uruguay in the group stage. One of the Lions defenders must have been watching too much soccer over the past couple of weeks, as he took a massive dive following a Hoffy “shove” after the Neymar-imitator had smashed him in the back. Hoffy was presented with the second yellow card of the match, perhaps a little unluckily under the circumstances. The game was petering out at a rapid rate – the home side kicked 6 behinds to zilch in the last quarter! Jesse provided a rare final quarter highlight with a brilliant running left foot bullet to Ropati, before Joven took a nice floating mark across half forward. In the end it was the Jetters by 39 points, however 21 scoring shots to 2 was probably a better reflection of the Jets dominance over a gallant hard-tackling Lions pride.

Overall, a strong effort from the undermanned Jetters as they enjoyed belting out the theme tune in defiance of that dratted Amaroo Doctor! Finn Waters was the Jets best, taking 10 of the team’s 28 marks on the day, racking up 23 possessions and 4 tackles to boot! Jaiken and Hoffy were always dangerous up forward, with 2 goals each, J May was very busy, back to his best just 3 games into his season (29 possessions, 6 tackles, 4 marks), Scotty (20 possessions, 4 tackles, 3 marks), Jake (15 possessions, 4 tackles, 3 marks) and Ruan (9 hit outs, 5 tackles) tag-teamed well in the ruck, Jesse (19 possessions, 4 tackles) and Kyan (17 possessions, 4 tackles) were both busy in the mids, Ropati (10 possessions) was solid at both ends, reluctantly enjoying some forward time in the last quarter, and Jack Wunsch played an excellent 3 quarters before having to leave early, with 11 possessions. Liam was busy up forward, Crispy was getting into it the backline, Tommy Mac was busy on the wing, and Pebbles had a huge last quarter.

Thanks to Micky Peterson, our team umpire, and his slightly dog-eared yellow card, the flag-flapping Jorge, Brian Rock (runner), Darren Ulrich and Paul McCormack (boundary umps), the latter performing the duties for the first time and excelling into the gale!, Lou “Birdseye” Hoffmann, who defied the laws of nature and has been called up to film David Attenborough’s next Antarctica documentary, and Clare “Commando” Waters for notching up another half-thousand pics!

Under 13

This week the team were back at home to take on the Tuggeranong Bulldogs after two weeks on the  road. It was nice to be back on familiar soil, though I’ll never get used to the icy cold wind. Some say I need to harden up, I say we need our own Etihad Stadium. 😊

The game was one that was pencilled in as a win at the beginning of the year, however to the credit of the Bulldogs they had a really good start to the game and outplayed played us around the contested ball. There was not much scoreboard activity by either side, and we normally start our games well, so to come in at the end of the quarter with only scoring one point was a little disappointing.

I’d like to take the credit for the turnaround in the second quarter, but the credit goes to the team for lifting their intensity and support for each other around the ground. The clearances from the centre started to flow and with forward 50 field position we started to convert on the scoreboard. We kicked 3 goals 3 and kept Tuggeranong scoreless and overall a much-improved quarter.

We went back into our shell again in the third, though the wind did play a part with our poor ball delivery and we failed to add any score to the tally. The only pleasing part was that we still restricted the Bulldogs to just 2 points.

In the fourth quarter we still had plenty of gas in the tank, and we were able to run the footy a bit more and create space. This resulted in more shots on goal and we converted another 3 goals 1, with the Bulldogs adding another point.

Some notable highlights of the match included a bullet like goal from Sean, awesome goals on the angle from both Finlay and Cam. A long range goal from Charlie and Tom, and who could forget the monster kick from the centre all the way to the goal line by Ruan (too bad it was the wrong direction) 😊

One unhappy note for the match was when Noah left the field clutching his wrist mid way through the third term. He was visibly distressed and screaming with what turned out to be a fractured and dislocated wrist. He’s a tough customer but even this injury was too much to bear, and he had to go under to have the wrist put back into place. But like a true professional and dedicated team member, he says he’ll be at training during the week barking orders to the rest of the boys!

Under 12 Black

Training this week had been committed and focused. Last weeks loss seemed to light a fire under the team and they were keen to put the 1st half of the season behind them. We headed out to Kambah to play the Tuggeranong Lions. The wind was blowing a gale and we won the toss and elected to kick with the wind. After spending much of the first term in our forward line we went into the break up 6 -1 thanks to a cheeky rovers goal from Edward after a ball spilled out the back of the pack. The second term we were up against the breeze but the team didn’t let it stop them. Ed took a mark inside the 50 but, outside of his range. He looked for a teammate in a better position and soon found Logan in the left pocket. Using the breeze Logan calmly slotted a major. Soon after the Ball spilled out the back again and Ed again pounced to kick his second of the match. The Lions kicked their first of the match as well. We went into half time up 19 – 7. With the wind at our back hopes were high. This quarter saw what could only be described as the tackle of the year by Matt. The poor Lions player never saw him coming and Matt near cut him in half winning a free kick for his team. The Lions held tough and if it wasn’t for some wayward kicking (very hard as they were against the wind) they would have been closer. Logan snapped his second great goal in this term and we went in up 26 – 9. The last term came and it felt like it went for twenty minutes instead of 15 (I’m sure it was only 15). With the wind Tuggeranong pilled on the pressure and the points. They were camped in their 50 all term. We were just unable to get the ball out. Tuggeranong kicked 2 goals 4 behinds and kept us scoreless. It was a tough game with lots of bumps and players rotating. It was always played in a great sprit. Other highlights included, Kieran and Tobys great work in the ruck, Matthew’s outstanding fullback work, Ari’s constant work rate and effort, Josh’s running, Sam H on ball work, Mitchell’s work on wing, the two Lochie’s defending and working on the wings, Nicks and Rod’s hard work all over the field, Jordi working hard at full forward. Bree’s determination and everyone getting to the ball first and passing it out. We are also lucky to have two players from the under 11 Black team backing up for each week, Murphy and Sam K put in the hard yards each week and they come to training each week also. They have both proven to be great additions to our team. This match was a real turning point for the team, not only did the get their first win of the season by 1 point, more importantly they really came together as team. Everyone could have got an award this week but the awards went to Kieran, Isaac and Will.

Under 12 Blue

Round 8 of the season saw the Jets Blue team back at home to take on cross border rivals; the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.  In a match that the Jets ultimately lost, the players can be extremely proud of their efforts. All players competed hard and were in the match right up until the final quarter; with a series of last quarter goals ultimately breaking our backs.

The match day award winners were Austin Evans and Jack Dawson. Austin received his award after a string of solid performances in Jets colours and Jack received his game day honours for his improving effort and performances every week. Jack was also responsible for the match highlight for the Jets team with a neat right foot snap to earn the home team a major.

Darcy O’Keeffe and Ethan Russell owned the midfield. Both players consistently won hard fought possession contests and both players used their wide range of skills to move the ball into the Jets attacking zones. Both players also had very high work rates and never allowed their legs to stop turning over.

Rok van Dalen and Jamie Balshaw worked hard to support their team mates in attack as well as in defence. Both Rok and Jamie continually worked to free themselves as well as looked for as many touches of the football as possible.

Rachel Carroll played out the full match and showed her value for the team by always putting herself in position to compete whether it be a tackle, a spoil, a shepherd or a kick. Rachel will never be far from the action.

Charlie Watts and Kallan Llyod played arguably their best matches of the season. Both players worked exceptionally hard off the ball to give their team mates options and both players worked hard to get their bodies into a possession contest or to help a team mate.

Joshua Armstrong and Tyler Thomas were an ever-present threat on the field. Both players providing inspiration for their team mates by their high work rates and willingness to chase the ball and heap defensive pressure on their opposites. Both players were also able to show their skills with many deft touches of the football between themselves.

Kaiden Armstrong and Harrison Baker were always a threat to the opposition with the opposition coach lifting their defensive efforts against these players once they could see what each player was capable of.

Declan Howard continued with his week to week improvements with another improved performance. Declan’s efforts at training and willingness to lift his involvement on game day is reaping rewards. Declan won many possession contests by simply out enthusing his opposition. Declan was also we supported by Kasey van Dieman who is another player that looks to increase his involvement in the game and is always looking for opportunity to sink his teeth into a possession contest.

Findlay Farrell and Ebony Overton (Jets Blue. Under 11) were not to be outdone by their team mates with both players running head long into possession contests and both players putting in back to back sprint efforts to get themselves free or to mark up on their opposite number.

Finally, Harrison Greenwood rounds out a strong total team performance with Harrison contributing high value offerings throughout the match, whether it be a spoil, a shepherd a strong mark or a neat kick, Harrison was never far from the action.

Next week the Jets are away to the Belconnen Cats

Go Jets!

Under 11 Blue

The (relative) balmy conditions from the previous weeks match against the Jets Black was a vision of the past and reality set it weather wise  for this week’s encounter against the Queanbeyan Tigers.  Queanbeyan (8th) with 3 wins and a draw took on the Jets Blue team sitting in 11th place on 2 wins.  The Tigers came into the match full of confidence after sharing the points last week with the highly fancied Magpies White outfit.  Amaroo turned on a very cold day for the visitors with a nasty cross wind favouring the Amaroo school end.  Our Captain for the day Harry Sawyer won the toss and gave the team the immediate advantage.  Missing from the side that beat the Jets Black team was Marcus and Stuart Ward, Mitchell Engel and Shaela Langshaw.  However we welcomed back Darby Veitch for his first game of the season after a long lay off.  Darby didn’t look like he missed a beat and had a superb game.  Welcome back Darby!!!

The game was very physical and played at high intensity.  The ball was in our forward line for long periods before Harry Freer kicked his regulation goal taking a clever running mark and getting the team on the board.  Our backline of Jaydon, Xavier, Dante, Baxter, Cooper, Josh Page and Tayte stood strong and repelled some dangerous Tiger attacks.  Any goal with the wind was going to be handy, but any goal against the wind would have spelled disaster.  At quarter time Jets Blue 1.0.6 to 0.0.00

The second quarter required some desperate defence.  Strong tackling particularly from Baxter and Tayte set the tone for a great team effort in holding the Tigers goalless.  Axyl, Wicko, and Zac were providing great drive from the centre.  Ebony, Josh and Harry Jeffries were performing with great gusto on the wings.  Tyler saw plenty of the action up back and at half time the match was delicately poised with the Jets having a narrow 3 point lead.

The third quarter seemed to be a mirror image of the first.  The ball spent large amounts of time in our forward line, but the Tigers were holding firm. Coach Freer shifted Ethan Huang up forward and Ethan didn’t let him down, slotting what ended up being the match winning goal to give the team some breathing space.  Ethan is making a habit of bobbing up and kicking much needed goals.  Micah was also creative in this quarter across half forward but a tall number 17 in the Tigers jumper was providing great resistance in keeping the young Jets out.

The last quarter was a desperate slog.  Riley Gower provided plenty of run and courage and Riley showed when he was accidentally hit high and had to come off with a bloodied nose.  The team hung on with the Tigers unable to break through for a much needed goal.  An 8 point win against a very tough opposition is proof that the young Jets are playing very committed football.  Combinations are becoming more evident, we just need to get some shepherding happening.  The goal kicking at training during the week seemed to pay off as we slotted 2 goals from 2 shots compared to the oppositions 4 misses.

It was hard to pin point our best players, as everyone had a good game and contributed to the win.  In the end,  Jake Boundy was superb taking a number of marks in the centre and driving the ball forward.  Ethan Huang was in everything and is becoming a dangerous forward, our Captain Harry Sawyer lead by example and clogged up the defence when Queanbeyan had the wind, whilst Axyl  had another great game in the ruck and his long left foot penetrating kicks were extremely useful.

So with 3 wins, the Jets now face a stern test against the Belconnen Cats at Aranda. The Jets supporters are loving what they are seeing and if the team can bring that level of enthusiasm and endeavour into each match they will be a very hard team to beat.  A bit of poise with the ball and shepherding for team mates will go a long way to eventual success.

Under 10 Black

A beautiful morning greeted the players at Gordon for the big clash between our Mighty Jets Black and the Tuggeranong Bulldogs Red.
Our boys were up against it early as the Bulldogs, playing with an extra number, capitalised on the numerical advantage several times to take an early lead.
To our boys credit they hung in there and provide some scoreboard pressure eventually scoring a beautiful goal by Andre Niesen. Suddenly the boys had some belief and before to long the goals started flowing.
Our players, who’s tackling had been a feature for most of the year, stepped it up a notch in this area of the game and harassed their opponents into making mistakes.
The boys then persisted in using handball to team mates to gain extra run and carry and hit their targets up forward.
This resulted in a last term comeback and when Clancy Preston kicked 2 goals within minutes it was suddenly game on.
The boys kept striving hard to kick another and when the ball landed in the hands of Liam Russell who kicked truly, capping off a magnificent personal game and an incredible fight back by the team.
The boys gave their all and deserved the applause from the families who barracked hard all match and had urged the lads to keep fighting until the end.
Clancy Preston continued to play as he has all season providing plenty of aggression and skill. The boys definitely stand a little taller when he is on the field and he capped off his game with 2 clutch goals.
Noah Treloar showed fantastic energy and toughness as he laid several excellent tackles working hard to keep the ball in his zone. He is growing in confidence against older and bigger bodies and continues to play with the most infectious smile.
Liam Russell has had a very consistent season but he took it to a new level today and played his best game. His tackling was a highlight while he also marked well and showed tremendous composure to slot thru the crucial goal towards the end of the game.
Andre Niesen has had a very good month of football, tackling well and leading from the front with some excellent descion making and creative play, when he is firing he certainly lifts his team mates.
Ethan Gibbs continues to work very hard for his side and while he always looks spent he tackles hard and gets in and under when required as he grows more confident each week.
Cohan Howard has been fantastic all season with his uncanny ability to get down on one knee, pick up the ball cleanly and avoid being tackled simply amazing. He does this week in and week out to my amazement.
Toby Treloar had his best game for a month. I put the acid on him at training that he needed a lift and he certainly did this as he worked very hard for the team and showed some leadership qualities when challenged.
Aiden Watt had another fine game with his ability to put his body on the line a standout. He marked well, collected many disposals and with better decision making when in traffic he will only take his game to a higher level.
Stuart Williams had another solid game continuing from recent good form. When he puts his head down and decides the ball is his many can’t stop him as he worked very hard in the packs for his side. With more practice on his disposal he will get even more reward for his efforts.
Haydon Ahern again worked hard for the team under pressure with his tackling and pack work a treat. He has had a solid season and can always be relied upon when the going gets tough.
Karl Niesen got better and better as the game grew longer. After a slow start he got going in the second term and was a major catalyst to a terrific fight back. When he is up and about his energy lifts the side to a new dimension.
Award winners this week were Toby Treloar and Clancy Preston who both walked away with the Canberra Rock Climbing Award.
A great effort by the boys in a highly competitive match which showed when challenged under difficult conditions they have the ability to fight back and get a good result.
Thanks to all families for their continued support with special mention to the Treloar family who must have travelled around 90 minutes to get from Goulburn to Gordon.
Thanks to Brett Russell for his work with the team and assisting getting things organised and my apologies for forgetting the fruit for the day….Ooops!

Under 10 White

The boys came up against Eastlake Demons Red this week at Amaroo. Three of our players had to pull out on the eve or morning of the match due to illness, which meant all the other boys had to step up and play well for their sick team mates.

We started the game slowly and our intensity and skill levels were down on previous weeks. We were sliding off our opponents when attempting to tackle and kicking frequently to opposition players. Eastlake attacked well and made it difficult for us to move the ball quickly through the midfield and to score goals.

We had a good chat at the first and second third breaks about getting the basics right. The boys felt we were right in this game. The boys lifted their efforts in the second third, but it was the final third that was most pleasing. It was in this third that the boys tackled relentlessly, put in second and third efforts to win the ball and scored four or five great team goals.

Our backline players for the last third set a goal of not letting Eastlake score a goal, despite having one less player in this zone than Eastlake. They boys were constantly under pressure but did not concede a goal. A great 'against all odds' effort from the boys.

Maltiti took a couple of great marks and spoiled his opponents from marking several times.

Liam C played strongly all game. His goal line defence in the last third was inspirational.

Max took some good intercept marks and put in great second and third efforts to win the ball.

Will held things together in the backline in the first third, when we were outnumbered, and stopped Eastlake from scoring even more goals in this third.

Jacob lifted in the final third by kicking a goal and getting the ball to his team mates so they could score.

Xavier tackled strongly, took intercept marks and defended until the final whistle.

Mario was lively down forward but put in his strongest effort when in the midfield in the final third.

Liam K won plenty of contested ball in another strong performance.

Brandon scored an early goal in the opening minutes of the game and ran hard all day.

This week's awards went to Liam C for his defensive work and Max for his second and third efforts to win the ball.

A special mention to Jo for her excellent umpiring efforts!!!

Under 9 Black

Round 8 of the season had Jets Black against Belconnen Panthers at Aranda. The sun shone, the wind blew and then blew some more making it a brisk afternoon for AFL.
The players were undeterred and got straight into training with plenty of handballing and kicking drills. The skill level of the team is increasing each week and this week was no exception. Drills that often ended in disarray early in the season were crisp this week.
With the wind at their back the team took on a Panthers team who held a numbers advantage which they used well to their advantage throughout the afternoon. As has been their way during the season a slow start was built on each term displaying more of the skills that they have learnt.

Team Wrap.
Elliott: Was able to get his hands on the ball in all thirds, committed to the tackles and used the wind to full effect with some booming kicks. Rewarded with the player of the day.
Cooper M: Combined well with his team mates, often coming up with the ball around the ruck and moving it forwards. Support team provided the all-important oranges (thanks).
Cooper B: An all-round performance kicking well and working hard in defence with some committed tackles.
Sam: Showed good running in all thirds and was able to get his hands on the ball and get some kicks away.
David: Kept turning up in defence and attack, with his high work rate off the ball making space for his team mates.
Kaleb: Showed some good skills and ability to read the game especially in defence where he was able to take some critical goal line marks. (Thanks to the support team for umpiring.)
Claire: Great work rate and made some important tackles on larger players without hesitation.
Cooper G: Another who showed good skill to get his hands on plenty of ball, some good disposals under pressure.
Ryder: Took some pressure marks and showed determination with his ability to bust out of the ruck with the ball in hand.

Under 9 Grey

Windy and cold conditions greeted Jets Grey after the bye weekend, with Aranda being the venue for the much anticipated contest against our friends from Jets White. The extended training session due to the earlier game running overtime didn’t seem to dampen your enthusiasm. Coach Russell gathered the players in for a quick chat about what to expect from Callan; to which you all listened and paid careful attention to – he lays a mean tackle.

With the game finally underway we started our taller players: Alex, Patrick and Max in the centre who used their long kicking skills that we’d just practiced before-hand to get us moving forward. Tarkyn battled through a knock to the leg to notch up some good goals and was evenly supported by Allaster, Chloe and Eamon. Down back, Jackson’s reading of the play was exceptional, as he always seems to be in the right position to mark the high balls coming in.

In the 2nd term the Whites battled valiantly against the wind, moving the ball forward where Eamon, our “Guzman y Gomez” player of the round, was busy at the bottom of the packs and rebounding from defence. Our forwards continued to use the wind to its full advantage. Max’s booming left foot notched up a goal, Patrick (Canteen Award) had a long set shot for goal which sailed through, likewise Alex at long range from the boundary…even Campbell from the centre third kicked long over the top of the defence which managed to just dribble through!

In the final term, we tried to share the ball around even more with our teammates – Al handballing to Campbell between thirds opened up the space for a snap on goal around his body. Chloe had her best game of the year: showing a clean pair of hands to gather the ball, turn and kick to a teammate was a highlight. Then not to be outdone, Emily (Goodberry’s Award) lit up the forward line with her best game of the year, snagging 3 goals.

This was a fantastic team effort and clearly your best game of the year. The passing of the ball to teammates in the clear rather than blasting away a highlight – well done.  It was also great to see the teams join together after the game to belt out the club song!

Under 8 White

In 1812 Napoleon was forced into retreat as the soldiers of his Grand Armee were defeated by starvation and hypothermia following the early onset of a harsh Russian winter.  Almost 206 years later, Jets White might have suffered a similar fate as they took on the Belconnen Cats running into the face of an icy cyclonic head wind at Aranda Oval.   Conditions were not easy for Under 8 White players, but they bravely pulled together, overcoming the odds and, in doing so, proved themselves more resilient than Napoleon’s 19th Century Frenchmen.

At the start of the first term, the Jets only had two players holding the fort in the defensive zone.  Joel Smidt and Tom Pellow were still playing with the under 9s, whose game had been delayed due to a late-finishing under 15s match on their field.  Murphy Hart and Isabelle Esdaile were left to repel a determined Belconnen attack.  They fought bravely, but were outnumbered.  The Cats midfielders were also making good use of the wind at their backs, so there wasn’t much that Murphy and Issy could do other than watch the aerial artillery pass overhead.  The ball was well out of reach of many of the adults at Aranda Oval, so it would be harsh to blame the Jets defenders for failing to stop Belconnen’s goal scoring assault.

At the other end of the ground, a full-strength forward line made up of Carter Freeman, Claudia Granger and Isaac Massey was enjoying some success. If you’re a betting person, your money’s safe on Carter or Claudia from a set shot just about anywhere in the attacking zone.  Claudia showed everyone just how reliable she can be, marking under pressure then coolly slotting the nut to finish off a great play.  Not to be outdone, Carter took a mark of his own then, looking the part of a seasoned professional, he tucked his mouthguard into his sock, lined up at a 45 degree angle and directed the Sherrin straight through the posts.

Fellow forward, Isaac Massey did things a little differently.  Isaac took some terrific marks which entitled him to take the time to plan his next move.  But Isaac was on a mission. With no time to stop and smell the roses, Isaac shunned the set shot in favour of playing on, hotfooting it directly to the goal square which allowed him to kick left and right of the bewildered defenders from directly in front.  It was a tactic that earned him three goals for the term.

By the start of the second term Tom Pellow and Joel Smidt had been released from under 9s duties.  Although they provided Murphy Hart and Issy Esdaile with much needed relief in the middle, Murphy wasn’t about to take his foot off the pedal.  He kept busy gathering loose balls and sending them deep into the forward 50.  His work rate was impressive.  Issy Esdaile provided useful support, throwing herself into the fray at every opportunity.  Over the last couple of weeks she’s shown the team that she is really keen for a contest.  Things were no different on Saturday as Issy set about winning much of the hard ball in the centre and up forward.  It was a great effort with frostbitten hands.

The second term saw some excellent play-making including an absolute slingshot that started with Claude Granger in the backline.  Claudia collected the ball, passed to Murphy in the midfield who sent it on to Matthew Davies who took the ball in the forward pocket and goaled!  That was not only a sign of things to come, but also one of many instances of Matthew’s solid marking and goal-kicking.  Matthew won the Guzman y Gomez Player of the match award for his contribution.

From there the Jets put on some more great teamwork, resulting in goals to Adrian Davies and Xavier Riches.  Carter Freeman and Claudia were starting to work well together in the backline, handballing, switching play and running the ball out of the defensive zone.  Joel Smidt made the injury list when a boot connected with his frozen nose.  Courageously he returned to the ground to play on.  It was a fantastic effort considering that some of the team were, by that stage, having difficulty moving their limbs in the extreme cold.

The good teamwork continued in the final third.  Carter and Claudia were controlling the midfield with well-executed handballing.  Bruce McAvaney would have struggled to call the play as the ball passed from Claudia to Carter, back to Claudia, who switched the play, Carter back to Claudia then to Isaac for the clearance.  Isaac was on fire, taking several contested possessions in the centre.  He even intercepted a Cats bullet with a hard mark right in the breadbasket and then, true to his character, he played on, ran to the edge of the midfield zone and drove the ball deep into the forward 50.  Isaac was awarded the Canberra Rock Climbing prize for his heroics.

In the forward line Murphy Hart persisted with his hard work despite the cold and the vicious headwind.  Murphy kept busy collecting loose balls and adding to the score line with a goal and a behind from long range.  The final play of the match summed up the Jets’ resolve as a very red-nosed Joel Smidt swooped on the ball and kicked a goal right on the siren.

Thanks goes to the Freemans for time-keeping and providing the oranges and to Nick Davies for goal umpiring.
