NEON General Meeting Approves New Vision and Work Programme
NEON Members met in Brussels on the 13th of June to approve a revised long-term strategy and work programme. NEON members confirmed their ambition of becoming the network uniting all publicly-mandated, independent and not-for-profit consumer dispute-resolution services active in the energy sector. NEON’s work programme for the coming months will build on this vision and on the variety of NEON members to promote the exchange on common interests and shared challenges. Read more.
NEON at the 1st EU event dedicated to providers of Alternative Dispute Resolution Services
On the 11th and 12th of June, the European Commission organised the very first event gathering representatives of notified European Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) entities, ADR competent authorities, consumer organisations and other stakeholders around the the effective provision of alternative and online dispute resolution. Our President, Mr Lewis Shand Smith, had the honour of presenting NEON to the over 300 participants. Download his presentation
Market Design Trilogues: Do Not Leave Consumers in the Dark
The last week of June saw the start of the negotiations between the EU Parliament, the Member States (Council) and the Commission on the proposal to review the Directive on common rules for the internal market in electricity (the so-called "Market Design" Directive), which should last until the end of the year.
In this article, we explain why strong consumer-protection and out-of-court dispute settlement provisions are essential if we want to create trust and promote consumer participation in the energy market. In our view, while the European ADR Directive is a good reference in terms of quality standards, it is not sufficient to protect consumers when it comes to the provision of essential services such as energy.
New Deal for Consumers: Protect Consumers from Abusive Practices in Doorstep Selling
In April 2018, the European Commission presented its “New Deal for Consumers”, which includes a proposal to amend a series of EU consumer protection directives (directive on unfair terms in consumer contracts, price-indication directive, unfair commercial practices directive and directive on consumer rights).
In the last months, our members have seen a large increase in unfair practices in doorstep selling (see for example Belgium and France). We therefore welcome the possibility for Member States to further regulate this issue, but warn that certain amendments may weaken the position of the customer. Read our comments.
