Building Better Business Resilience: Literature Review Report Launch Event

The ERC held an event at The Shard in London on 5th July to mark the launch of the first report from the 'Building Better Business Resilience' study. The project is  a 2-year European study investigating SME resilience in under-represented communities, which is being supported by the JPMorgan Chase Foundation. There was excellent engagement from the stakeholders present, who were from a range of organisations involved in providing practical support and advice to SMEs and the target groups of the study. The questions raised will help inform the research as it goes forward into the fieldwork phase.

Design Economy 2018

Mark Hart and the ERC team were pleased to be involved in producing a large part of the statistical evidence as well as showing the connection between design & innovation - an established driver of productivity for the new Design Council report on the design economy launched by Greg Clark MP (Secretary of State for BEIS) at the Northern Business Summit in Newcastle on 5th July.
The Design Economy 2018 is the Design Council's report on the state of design in the UK, and its value to the economy.

Commenting on the report Mark Hart added "It is important to stress the design economy is much broader than the design sector. Designers are in every sector of the economy"

Under-represented entrepreneurs: a literature review
ERC Report
05 July 2018

Some groups of individuals are more likely than others to struggle to find paid employment because they experience systemic disadvantage of some kind. These groups include migrants, people who identify as having a disability, and those with low educational attainment. The entrepreneurship route – essentially becoming self-employed or starting their own businesses - is often suggested as a way into work for these people. These groups of individuals are thus under-represented in entrepreneurship, and this paper reviews published research from both academic and non-academic sources that investigates why this might be.

Business resilience in an SME context: a literature review
ERC Report
05 July 2018

We define business resilience as a strategic objective intended to help an organisation survive and prosper. A highly resilient organisation is more adaptive, competitive, agile and robust than less resilient organisations and rebounds from adversity strengthened and more resourceful.
Resilience is clearly highly desirable in business organisations and as a result, business resilience is a growing field of research. This report explores academic and non-academic research into resilience in SMEs in particular, and identifies the key strands of work that have been done so far. It also identifies gaps in our knowledge which underpin an agenda for future research.

ERC PhD Studentships

We welcome applications for 3 PhD studentships in the general area of SME performance which will be based at both Warwick and Aston Business Schools. Interested applicants are asked to provide a brief (3-4 page) project proposal outlining their proposed PhD research topic. This should include references to key literature and research gaps, an overview of the focus of the thesis and proposed research methods and an indication of potential publication outlets. We welcome proposals on any area of SME competitiveness but preference will be given to applications which are relevant to UK policy agendas around productivity, innovation and exporting and/or business growth. We particularly welcome applications which have a spatial dimension within the UK or a comparative international perspective. More information about the ERC, available datasets and existing research are available at www.enterpriseresearch.ac.uk.

Proposals should be sent in the first instance to the ERC Centre Manager and will be considered on receipt.
