Communicating alcohol health risks to expectant mothers

A new study by Dr Rachel Brown and Heather Trickey from Cardiff University, funded by Alcohol Research UK, was published last month. It looks at the way in which we communicate advice on alcohol and pregnancy. Heavy drinking during pregnancy is extremely risky, as it can lead to Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Yet currently there is no strong evidence that drinking at low levels (up to four units a week) is harmful.

The current Chief Medical Officers' low risk drinking guidelines recommend not drinking at all, which is clear and easy to follow advice. But it can also create anxiety, which is a risk factor during pregnancy.

Come to our conference on alcohol and travel

Alcohol Concern Cymru's 2018 conference is taking place in September. The event, 'On the Move', will be on the theme of alcohol and travel.

We'll be looking at recent developments and proposed legislative changes around transport. Delegates will hear from leading experts including:
  • Dr Niamh Fitzgerald, University of Stirling, who will examine the impact of Scotland's new lower drink-drive limit;
  • Professor Marcus Munafò, University of Bristol, who will explore how we might change drinking behaviours for the better;
  • Diarmuid O'Conghaile, Director of Public Affairs at Ryanair, who will discuss drinking and air travel.
Join us to consider how policy-makers can strike the right balance between promoting public safety and ensuring our continued freedom to enjoy alcohol in public spaces.
