The joint first prizewinners of the ASH Valorisation Award 2017-2018 are Over de Muur and Josephine van den Bent, as announced on 2 July at the ASH end of term event and awards ceremony. 

This year the jury was confronted, yet again, by the impressive diversity in ASH researchers' areas of engagement - so many kinds of activities, important in different respects, showing the great many directions 'valorisation' can take. These efforts are truly commendable. Read more

The winner of the ASH dissertation award 2017-2018 is Ingrid de Zwarte (History) for her PhD dissertation 'The Hunger Winter: Fighting Famine in the Occupied Netherlands, 1944-45'. In February 2018, Ingrid completed her PhD in History at the UvA and the NIOD under supervision of Professor Peter Romijn and Dr Ralf Futselaar.

The dissertation skillfully sheds new light on existing views on the Hunger Winter. De Zwarte's approach is highly interdisciplinary, combining historical research with methods and insights from criminology, demography and epidemiology. Read more

Antonia Weiss (History) has been awarded a grant as part of the NWO’s PhDs in the Humanities programme. She received the grant for her project 'Crafting Nature, Cultivating Gender: Gender en stedelijk groen in Amsterdam en Berlijn tijdens de lange 18de eeuw'. Read more

The Marie Curie ITN proposal ‘Mediating Islam in the Digital Age’ (MIDA) has been awarded. 

MIDA is coordinated by the ‘Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique’ (CNRS) in Paris. The consortium includes twelve beneficiaries and thirteen partner organisations.  The University of Amsterdam/ NISIS is one of the beneficiaries, led by Professor Gerard Wiegers (Comparative Religious Studies, ASH). Harry Kraaij (ASH PhD candidate) published part one of his blog series about the Oostvaardersplassen on Wetenschap.nu. He describes our alienation from nature and our way of thinking about (wild) animals. He urges to bring back a perspective on the planet with man as restauractor.  Read the blog

“The Iranian Revolution as a World Event” is a workshop organized at the UvA in order to mark the 40th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution of 1978-79, rightly considered as one of the most significant events of 20th century world history. The workshop will take place on 13 and 14 December 2018 in Amsterdam.

Abstracts (300 words max.) should be sent before 23 July 2018 to IranianRevolutionConference@gmail.com. The organizers (Artemy M. Kalinovsky and Peyman Jafari) will select the papers and communicate the results by the end of July. Read more

The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS) is offering six doctoral scholarships for Internationals. The scholarships start on 1 April 2019. They have a duration of three years and include a stipend of EUR 1.365,- per month. Deadline is 30 September 2018 Read more

The Research Innovation and Sustainability (RIS) Fund enables employees to apply for temporary teaching release in order to have more time to write grant applications, or to finish one or more (substantial, strategic) publications so as to strengthen the track record significantly and qualify for a successful grant application in the near future.

In 2018 approximately ten applicants can be awarded a RIS fellowship. The next deadline for submitting applications is 1 September 2018.

The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for 0.5 FTE PhD Finishing Fellowships, tenable from January 1, 2019. Each fellowship will be for a period of up to 12 months. The award holder is required to deliver a completed dissertation (defined as "dissertation submitted to the examination committee") by the end of the fellowship period.

The application deadline is 1 October 2018.
