Iowa City Climate Action Plan Meeting July 11

     Discover how you can get involved in Iowa City’s Climate Action Plan during an upcoming community meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St.
     We'll talk about actions that can be incorporated into everyday habits like transportation, diet, and consumption, to larger projects like the development of buildings and neighborhoods. People are encouraged to come and learn more about the steps needed to put the plan in motion.
     The Climate Action Steering Committee, representing a variety of community groups and organizations, has been working to develop Iowa City’s first-ever Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, which will include ways to achieve community-wide greenhouse gas reduction targets, in addition to creating a more livable, equitable and resilient Iowa City. The plan is expected to go before the City Council this summer.

Rummage in the Ramp Begins July 26

     No need to throw away your old couch or buy a new table as leases turn over in July! Go to Rummage in the Ramp, which takes place July 26 to Aug. 4 in the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp.
     Bring your unwanted furniture, clothes, kitchenware, and any other items that can be reused, and shop around for new items, most of which are $20 or less. Profits are split between environmental and human services non-profit groups that volunteer to work the sale, including several UI groups. The event will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and Sunday, and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 4.  Find out more at icgov.org/rummageintheramp.

Solar Power Hours Continue in July

      Solar Power Hours continue on July 11,18, 19, 31 and Aug. 2 at various locations in Johnson County, where you can learn more about solar energy and potentially invest in affordable solar through a new program called Solarize Johnson County. 
     The free, one-hour long information session teaches you the basics of solar, its financial implications for your household, and how the Solarize program works. Then, get a free, no obligation site assessment from an installer. You have until August 31, 2018, to decide whether to get solar through the program.

Sustainable Water Development Program
CompletesFirst Year

    The inaugural class of the Sustainable Water Development (SWD) Program completed its first year. Unlike most graduate programs, the UI’s SWD graduate program doesn’t just prepare students for a career in research and teaching. Rather, it gives them the training they need to become multifaceted professionals, people with the expertise to perform scientific research and the skills to make science understandable, relatable, and believable to a wide audience of community members, elected officials, and policy makers.

UI Earns Grant for 500 Recycling Bins     

     The UI Office of Sustainability will distribute 500 new recycling bins around campus thanks to the Public Space Recycling Bin grant from Coca-Cola North America and the organization Keep America Beautiful.
      As a condition of the grant, the office will distribute a “tiny trash” bin with each recycling bin, a standard already common around the university. Research by Keep America Beautiful has deemed tiny trash bins an effective way to increase office recycling. Read more about the bin grant in this Daily Iowan article.
