Bull City Bucks 101

(AKA how do I get more
healthy food into my DOC patients)

Bull City Bucks is here!

Who:

ü  DOC patient

ü  SNAP (food stamp) recipient

ü  Has, or is willing to get, a Food Lion MVP card

What:

ü  Provides $40/month (!!!) to be spent at Food Lion on fresh, canned and frozen fruits and vegetables without added salt, sugar or fat

Why:
Eating more fruits and vegetables, with no added salt, sugar or fat, can help your patients better control things like blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and more.

How:

ü  Jan, Elissa, Laurie, Marigny, Valerie, Julia and Ileana can enroll patients currently

ü  Online enrollment.  Literally takes 2 minutes or less, or up to 5 if they need to sign up for an MVP card

So what do you need from me?

ü  Notice-does your patient talk about food insecurity or hunger?

ü  Ask-does your patient get SNAP benefits (“food stamps”)?

ü  Refer your patient to one of the enrollers

ü  Put .DOCBULLCITYBUCKS in the AVS

ü  Encourage your patient to use their Bull City Bucks every month

ü  Not sure?  Ask an enroller!

Do you have any more information?

Yes!  The program rolled out first at another Durham clinic.  The first month of transaction data from Food Lion shows that there were 25 people enrolled by that clinic in June.  Of those, 20 people got their $40, or a total of $800 available for fruits and veggies.  However, only 8 people used their Bucks, spending a total of $142 out of a possible $800.

SO---enrolling is the easy part.  We need YOU to encourage the patients to spend and use their Bull City Bucks!
