The little things that mean a lot

Dear parents/carers

It has been a beautiful few weeks of glorious weather. One could get to believing it is always like this in England.

One of the benefits has been that students have been able to use all the outside areas that the school offers, especially the field.

With benefits there are always inevitable drawbacks – litter is one of these. I have tried many different models. Bins on the field, loads of bins on the field and no bins on the field – the latter being the most successful believe it or not! However, some litter persists.

Yesterday was unremarkable in the fact that as with every other day I spend break and lunch times out and about and with the weather as it is, generally on the field. However, the remarkable bit about yesterday lunchtime was that it ended with me watching not one, but a significant minority of students picking up other peoples litter as they left the field. It made me think about what goes on around me, often unseen, certainly unheralded, to make life better for all of us.

Every day there are so many little things going on at our school that mean a lot. There is the time people give to help others, both students and staff, and the efforts people make by putting themselves out to help our school be the best it can be for the students and staff in it, the parents who support it and the community it sits within.

You know you have got something special when you discover all ‘the little things’ going on that make John Hanson an amazing place to work and learn.

Enjoy the continued sunshine this weekend with your children

Regards

Hot Weather, Blazers and P.E. lessons Period 5

Due to the forecasted continual hot weather we are extending the period for which students do not have to bring  or wear there blazer. If they have a P.E. lesson period 5 on any day next week they can go home in their kit rather than having to get changed. We will advise further when this hot spell breaks.

Thank you to all the bakers and to everyone who bought a cupcake last Friday. We raised £110!!!!

The funds we raised by hosting a Cupcake Day really can make all the difference to someone affected by dementia. Our Side by Side service is one example of what your donations could fund. This service brings people with dementia together with like-minded volunteers so they can continue to enjoy their interests and passions.

Raymond, who has Alzheimer’s, was paired with Side by Side volunteer Ian who shares his love of board games. Now they enjoy their time together by playing chess and card games. Raymond’s wife Maree says there’s been a big change and marked improvement in Raymond since he started spending time with Ian. It has really made a world of difference.

Just £30 could connect people with dementia and volunteers to enjoy hobbies and activities by paying for a Side by Side service to run for one hour.

Thank you for rising against dementia this Cupcake Day.

Best Wishes (with a cherry on top)

John Hanson School Gymnastics Festival
There was lots of excitement and smiles this week as the ninth annual John Hanson School Gymnastics Festival took place.  Over two days, 360 Key Stage 1 pupils from the John Hanson cluster of primary schools took part in the festival.

They had the opportunity to try out several gymnastics disciplines like trampolining, sports acrobatics, rhythmic gymnastics and vaulting, as well as having a go at  the very popular air track station.  The air track allows gymnasts to practise their tumbling skills on a long thin ‘bouncy castle’ like structure.

Pupils aged 4-7 years old from Abbotts Ann, Amport, Balksbury Infants, Clatford, Grateley, Shipton Bellinger and St John the Baptist Schools all took part in the festival.

The event was supported by an enthusiastic team of John Hanson Young Leaders  from Years 7 to 10, who ably assisted qualified instructors to run stations and take on the role of team leader.

Year 8 Science - SPACE

The year 8s have been working hard producing their Space posters! They have been asked to design a new planet that sits within our solar system. This is just one example of the fabulous work produced by year 8 in science this term. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the presentation afternoon on the 17th July from 3-4pm to see who has won a place in the trip to the national space centre!

Magazines: if anyone regularly buys, or has a subscription to a magazine that may interest the students of John Hanson, we’d really appreciate your old (but in good condition) copies once you’ve finished with them in our English classroom libraries.

We’re thinking anything hobby based such as sewing, or sporty, as well as titles such as Focus, The Economist etc. Please deliver to main reception.

Many thanks,

Mrs Hall
