July Bird Walk
Join us at 8:00 a.m. on July 14th for our monthly walk, this time at Kingman Island.
Kingman and Heritage Islands Park, situated on the Anacostia River, is an underappreciated gem of DC birding habitats. With great wetland habitat, we’ll look to see herons, egrets, and waterfowl such as cormorants. The spot also provides great fishing habitat for Bald Eagles and Osprey. In addition, the wooded sections of the islands provide homes to numerous songbird species.
We will meet near the entrance to Kingman and Heritage Islands in the parking lot of RFK stadium: https://goo.gl/maps/TBb9J.
There is plenty of parking in the RFK stadium lot (although you may have to check multiple entrances before finding an open gate) and the Stadium-Armory Metro stop is about a mile away.
Get your ducks in a row and register early.
As always, please be mindful of weather conditions, dress and hydrate appropriately, and use caution when traveling to new or unfamiliar birding locations.
Celebrate Urban Birds with friends of DC Audubon
The Pileated Woodpecker Strut will be held on Saturday, July 21 (rain or shine), 9AM to noon at the Nature Center in Rock Creek Park in DC; the address is 5200 Glover Rd NW. Co-sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Park Service, and the Potomac River Jazz Club, this all-ages event will combine bird awareness and observation with musical performance. The event is part of the Cornell Lab’s “Celebrate Urban Birds” initiative. Performing will be the Capital Focus Jazz Band, an award-winning young ensemble specializing in trad jazz (hot New Orleans style) and swing. The event will comprise an indoor public concert and outdoor birdwatching sessions, with instruction to the participants about how to identify birds, and how to make public and private spaces more bird-friendly. The National Park Service will present a “Birds in the Night Sky” session in their on-site planetarium as part of the event. Participants will receive free bird and flower identification pamphlets, sunflower seeds to plant at home, and Cornell Lab certificates of participation. ADMISSION IS FREE and there is no need to register.
